Chapter 7
xxx
"For fuck's sake, Liss, we are not listening to that CD again!"
"I thought you liked The Red Hot Chili Peppers Randall!"
"Yeah, I did, before you played it fifty-fucking-million times. You've got hundreds of CDs. Find something else," Randall groaned, from the backseat, his wide face covered in magazine about motorcycles to block the light so he could nap on the passenger-side, behind Danielle.
They all were on the road, heading to a gated community, to a cabin that Liss's parents owned. After talking about it and Liss assuring them that it was very private, Randall and Danielle concurrently agreed to go, the different scenery and relaxation being what they needed. So packing what they needed, having a friend watch Butter, and placing the bags in the trunk of Liss's car and Bread in the backseat with Randall, a day later they took off for the eight hour drive
Liss sighed and handed Danielle her thick CD case that had tons of said Cds. "Here, D," she said, "you pick something."
Danielle looked up from the book she had been reading as she petted Bread's head, as the old dog had her body n the floor in the back and her head resting in between the seats of the front. "Hmm..." she said, looking through the CD's. It was a huge mix of CD's. There was an Eminem cd, and a couple of indie bands she'd never heard of.
"Pick whatever you want," Liss encouraged her, grinning.
"Just no more Red Hot Chili Peppers and no and I mean absolutely no Showtunes!" Randall put in from the back.
"What's wrong with Showtunes Randall?" Liss asked as she drove with Danielle snickering.
Randall sat up and twisted around to look at the two human females. "Shall I give you a list Toots?"
Danielle giggled and turned to look at him. "Oh come on Randall…what's wrong with them?"
"Nothing in theory. And somebody must be doing something right….Showtunes have been running since the dawn of time." He shivered.
"You're exaggerating Randall…." Liss put in.
"It's the people spontaneously bursting into song….it makes me very uncomfortable for some reason."
Both Danielle and Liss bust into giggles, "I wonder what that says about your childhood Randall." Danielle giggled.
That made them giggle even harder, until Danielle pulled out a CD and slid it into the player.
The calm sounds of a country guitar came over the speakers and as Kenny Chesney began his song of 'No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems' began to play Randall leaned back. "Now this is much better…"
"Wow, Liss...this is some cabin," Randall said as he slowly turned in a circle in the middle of the main living area as he also stretched having endured a little over eight hours of riding in the back of Liss's car.
The 'cabin' was large and spacious with high, vaulted ceilings and a very open floor plan, yet at the same time it had a warm and cozy feeling. The floors were hardwood all throughout and large throw rugs were placed throughout. Large, glass windows looked out from all around the living room and into the woods and out onto the lake. There were heavy curtains that could be drawn for privacy, and also to provide extra warmth in the wintertime. The main living area boasted a large, stone fireplace and several comfy sofas and chairs. There was a large, flat screen T.V. mounted on one of the walls, and speakers were arranged throughout the space. Just off the large living are was a modern, good-sized kitchen. Aside from the entrance, there were four doors. One led to the ground floor bathroom, and the other led to outdoor deck...where, according to Liss, was a barbecue and a giant-sized hot tub. The other two led to their own bedrooms.
Liss grinned as she put her bags down. "Yeah...my parents' idea of roughing it is living without cable." She giggled softly. "According to my dad, Blacks don't camp."
Danielle giggled behind her hands, knowing what Liss's parents was like. Lisette wasn't originally from Arkansas or even Louisiana. She and her parents were from Chicago. When Liss had been 10 they had moved down to Baton Rouge and when Liss went into collage, they had moved to Arkansas. Danielle laid down Bread's dog bed and the little dog curled up and wagged her stumpy tail looking up at her.
Liss turned and started heading out the door. "C'mon, put your bags down and help me bring all the groceries inside."
"Thanks for having us all up here," Danielle said as she followed
Liss gave a small wave of her hand. "Don't worry about it. Besides...college is over…and you and Randall needs this."
"Yeah…we do…" Danielle said as she grabbed a few bags in both hands. "I still feel bad that Randall is stuck out at the house all the time with no one to talk to."
"Well…now that you let me in on your little secret…he can talk to me." Liss smiled as she pick up two bags of groceries as Randall came out and took them from her.
"If I can get a word in other wise from all the jaw flapping that you do." He smirked as he headed back in.
Liss stuck her tongue out at him. "Cheeky…" She then grinned wryly. "Yeah, well...enjoy your time while you still can, because let me tell you something...it's going to get crazy!"
As she lifted a case of soda into her arms, Danielle giggled.
After all the supplies had been brought inside and all perishable and melt-able items had been placed in either the fridge or the freezer, the three grabbed their bags and headed into their rooms. Danielle and Randall had the master for the larger bed. The walls were cream yellow and the thick soft carpet was a chocolate brown. Cream and white bedclothes dressed the bed and the widow slowed a lovely view of the woods and even an occasional sparkle of blue water from one of the lakes.
Randall and Danielle set their bags down and Danielle moved to go back out when Randall caught her by the arm and pulled her back so that he could nuzzle her neck. "Well you're being lovey." She giggled as she shivered as well.
"Must be the fresh air."
"Then what do you call the Swamp air?" Danielle raised an eyebrow.
"Stagnant, thick and wet…"
"Thought you liked the swamp…"
"I do. I meant the different air." Randall chuckled.
"Nice save." Danielle smirked. She knew what he meant and she didn't blame him. In fact there was so much she wanted to do with him while they was here. Running her hand over his head, she pressed a loving kiss to his crest. His hands tightened on her waist and just as he moved to kiss her Liss stuck her head into the room.
"All right you two…. you have a week and a half for that. You want to see what movie I brought?"
Randall grumbled as Danielle sighed but nodded. "Yeah…go pull them out." Leaving them Danielle looked at Randall. "Come no…she'll be back if we don't go and see."
"Yeah…sure uh huh." Randall followed Danielle out to the living room where Liss had opened a small box she was carrying all the DVDs in. "I brought Session 9, Flashback, Final Destination, both Grudge movies, Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th...Halloween...Evil Dead, Evil Dead II, Army of Darkness, the original House of Wax,
"Sheesh...how many did you bring?" Randall asked.
"Danielle told me to bring every horror movie that I have," Liss said with grin. "Although I must admit, some of these aren't scary at all...but then again, it could just be because I've watched them so many times...and besides, I brought a few non-horror flicks too," Liss said as she pulled out Legend, Labyrinth, Goonies, Austin Powers one and two …and the ultimate classic movie…Gone with the Wind."
"Ooo," Danielle said as she looked over the new selection on her way to put her toothbrush in the bathroom. "Nice selection."
Randall was looking over the movies and reading the backs, finally he put them down and looked at Danielle and Liss. "There is something terribly wrong with you humans."
This made them both fall into peals of laughter, with Randall shaking his head at them. When they were done laughing. Danielle moved to the kitchen. "Now I don't know about you guys, but I'm hungry after that long drive. Who's up for lunch?"
"Wow...look at that sunset…"
"It's gorgeous."
Randall nodded in agreement. "By the way, great job on the burgers Liss."
Danielle smirked, "And that shrimp salad was amazing as well."
Liss grinned. "Don't mention it. Still Danielle…you're working at a zoo now….I'm sure you can start eating chicken and pork and beef again…it's not like they are serving lion cub burgers."
"Eww. I don't know….it's…just a way of life now…"Danielle said as she leaned back into Randall's chest.
Because the weather was so clear, they had opted to eat dinner outside on the deck. They had lit the fire pit for warmth and had lounged around on the padded loungers as Randall and Liss enjoyed the burgers had cooked on the barbeque as Danielle ate a shrimp salad.
Danielle cuddled up against Randall in the lounger and watched the sun painting the sky in pinks and oranges as it slowly sank into the lake. Liss then took a picture of her and Randall and then the sky.
"That'll be a nice shot," Randall said with a grin before pulling a silly face when Liss took a photo of him.
Liss grinned and sniggered. "I am so hanging on to this."
"Too bad Michael's out of the picture. We maybe could have introduced him to Randall." Danielle said, "Then you wouldn't be the odd ball here."
"Yeah…but its no trouble." Liss said as she put the camera down.
"Why was it you dumped him again?" Randall asked as he looked over at the young woman that he's slowly becoming used to. "What happened?"
Liss shrugged. "He was being a pain and a drag, so I dumped his sorry ass. Besides, he was way too high maintenance. I hate guys like that. They're like poodles...and I hate poodles."
Danielle blinked. "How can you hate poodles?"
"Well, I don't really hate them so much as I'm creeped out by them…" She shuddered. "They're just creepy!"
Both Liss and Danielle burst into fits of hysterical giggles as Randall merely sighed and shook his head. After a few moments, Randall wiggled away from Danielle and grabbed a large, black, trash bag and began gathering up the used paper plates and throwing them inside.
"I'm going to get the skewers," Danielle said. "Liss, why don't you get the marshmallows, Hershey bars and graham crackers?"
"Sure thing."
"We're making s'mores?!" Randall looked up with interest.
Danielle grinned. "Of course we are. You can't start summer without s'mores!"

Randall nuzzled Danielle after she climbed into the bed and snuggled up against his warm scaly body. She ran her hands over his scales and sighed at the feeling of them. She loved to touch him. She HAD to touch him just as he HAD to touch her long red brown hair and curl it around his thick fingers. She sighed softly as he did so, and her lips met his in a deep and loving kiss.
She pulled back and nuzzled her head into his long and thin neck. There were no words spoken. They didn't need to say them.
