"Glitch." Olive rubbed her hand against her ear, trying to ignore the comm. and Natasha's persisitent voice. "Glitch, do you read?"
Olive sat up in bed. A glimpse in the mirror across from her showed her bleary eyes and messed up hair. There was no light in her room and she reached over to click on the lights. Rubbing a hand over her eyes she mumbled, "Copy. What's up?"
"Loki's going to make a play for the Hulk," Natasha replied. "Fury wants all of us in the lab, right now."
Yawning, Olive stood up, stretching her arms over her head. "Be there."
Olive reached over and grabbed her sword, strapping it to her back. She paused for a moment. Who was to say that she couldn't just leave right now? She could be gone and never look back. Bruce Banner had managed to disappear off the radar for a while . . . or had he? Natasha had been able to find him quick enough. . . . However, Olive had Traveling on her side. She could keep moving, keep Traveling until, maybe, eventually S.H.E.I.L.D would give up looking for her.
She could never forgive herself, though. She didn't think Steve would forgive her either.
Olive pressed the button by her door, opening it and walking out. She supposed she could just Travel to the lab but she felt like taking her time. Knowing how different Steve and Tony were, they were probably bickering.
Steve. . . .
She'd have to work up an apology sooner rather than later, she supposed, but that would be it. She'd apologize and then she would cut off all ties with him. It would be for the best and eventually she'd be able to believe that herself.
The Helicarrier shook violently and Olive was knocked off her feet as the plane tilted. She grabbed onto the rails as she slid down the platform. When the plane righted itself, Olive hopped to her feet, and Traveled to the lab.
There was a giant gaping hole in the floor and no one in sight.
"Director!" she called out, spinning around. "Natasha! Steve!"
She turned at the sound of footsteps and jumped inside the room when a round of bullets hit the wall next to her. Quickly she unsheathed her sword and then Traveled behind where the shots had come from.
She landed quietly crouched down. There were men waiting for her to reappear, about 9, guns aimed in the direction where she had been standing. She could tell by their gear, they were S.H.E.I.L.D agents, probably Loki's men. She didn't want to kill them. She slowly slid her sword back into its sheath, and unhooked her sheath from her back, making sure it was snapped snug around her sword.
Then she attacked.
With her sword, Olive was fast. With Traveling, she was even faster.
She knocked the hilt of her sword against the back of one agent's head, Traveling out of the way as the others turned towards her. She appeared in the middle of the group and took down two more agents before disappearing again. In and out, quick like she had been taught. She appeared, spun and slash, disappear, repeat. Before she knew it, all nine agents lay dormant on the ground.
Olive clipped the sword back on her back. Beneath her she could feel the Helicarrier shuttering, could hear the roars of the Hulk. This had been the plan all along, hadn't it, to get Bruce agitated, to have the Hulk tear them right out of the sky. Loki was, undoubtedly, brilliant.
The lights around her flickered, plunging the area into darkness. Olive grabbed onto the rail as the Helicarrier begin to tilt again. She leaned down, grabbing an agent before he could slip over the side.
The comm. in her ear cackled. "It's Barton," came Director Fury's voice. "He took out our systems. He's headed for the detention level. Does anybody copy?"
"This is Agent Romanoff. I copy."
"Agent Glitch here too. I'll head for the detention level if you catch up to Barton, Romanoff."
"I'm on it."
Olive shifted the agent again so he really wouldn't fall off the landing. Standing up straight she Traveled to the detention center. It was dark here too but even in the darkness, Olive could see that the glass cell was empty, the door wide open. She reached her hand up to her ear. "Hey guys, Loki –"
Something blunt banged against the back of her head, knocking her to the ground before a boot connected with her stomach, kicking her against the base of the stairs leading up to the glass cage.
"And here I was thinking you would put up more of a fight." Through watery eyes, Glitch looked up as Loki loomed over her. He looked up, towards the entrance before smiling back down at her. "Be a dear and wait quietly won't you?"
He vanished from in front of her just as the door opened, revealing Thor. "Thor," Glitch tried but he didn't hear her, didn't even acknowledge her. His eyes were glued above her on the glass door. Glitch rolled over, looking up to see Loki standing by the glass door as if he were just climbing out.
"No!" Thor roared, flying over her into the cage. The Loki he had charged disappeared as the door closed behind the Lightning God, revealing the real Loki.
Loki grinned at his brother. "Are you ever not going to fall for that?"
Thor's eyes adjusted and he finally truly saw his brother and saw Olive lying on the ground. "Lady Glitch!"
Glitch moved to stand when a guard appeared out of the corner of her eye, near the door, gun pointed at her heart. There was no way she could travel right then, not till she got her breath back.
Thor slammed his hammer against the glass, causing it crack and shutter but otherwise it didn't budge. Loki smirked, walking over the computer panel. "The humans think us immortal. Should we test that?"
Suddenly, the guard by the door crumpled to the ground, revealing Coulson, holding a giant gun in his hands. "Move away, please," he said, moving farther into the room, closer to Loki.
Coulson glanced down at Olive. "Alright there, Agent?"
"Peachy," Olive responded, sitting up.
Coulson turned his attention back to Loki. "You like this? We started working on the prototype after you sent the Destroyer. Even I don't know what it does. Do you wanna find out?"
The gun revved up but before anything could happen, Phil gasped, his back arching. Olive must have blinked or something because she hadn't seen Loki flinch or move or give any indication that there had been an illusion. But there he was now, standing behind Phil, with his scepter through Phil's back. Olive heard Thor scream behind her as Loki pulled the scepter out and let Phil slump to the ground against the wall across from her.
There was blood pumping in her ears as she scrambled to Phil's side, pressing her hand against his stomach, against the wound but there was so much blood and her hands were trembling and oh god what was she going to do.
Loki had walked back to the panel, pressing the buttons on it. The floor opened beneath Thor and Olive saw the two brothers watching each other before Loki pressed the button that released the cage. Olive could do nothing but stare in horror as the Asgardian disappeared, plummeting towards the earth.
"Olive." Olive looked down at Phil. "Get out of here. Run."
But Olive found she didn't want to run anymore. When she came to S.H.E.I.L.D, she had found a home. Phil had made that possible and now . . . .
"You wanted more of a fight," she murmured, getting to her feet. Loki looked up at her from where he stood, peering through the hole where he had just dropped his brother. There was murder in her gaze, she could tell as Loki watched her. She unclipped her sheath from her back and pulled lose the sword, dropping the casing to the ground. Her hands were covered in blood, Phil's blood and though she didn't think she could win this fight, she sure the hell wasn't going to go down with trying. "I'll give you one."
She Traveled, appearing in front of Loki, as close as she dared get, bring her sword down on him. She had startled him, she could tell, as he swiftly brought up his scepter to block her. Surprisingly he grinned. "Fast."
"You haven't seen anything yet!" Olive disappeared again, appearing behind Loki and attacking him but he was fast as well. He turned as she appeared, blocking her once more, parrying her attacks. When she saw in opening, she jabbed towards it him but then Loki was gone. She grunted as the butt of his scepter jammed itself into her spine, sending her stumbling forward. She rolled before pulling herself up to her feet, turning to face where Loki had appeared with a smile. She smiled back. "You're a coward."
Loki's smile dropped slightly. "What makes you say that?"
"You won't even fight me seriously. You're all tricks and illusions. What's the matter, Loki? Too scared to face little ol' me?" It was stupid she knew, taunting him, but she was pissed off and determined to let off some steam.
"You talk big, little Midgardian," Loki responded, frowning.
"With good reason." Olive rushed him and he met her, using his scepter as his sword. Olive considered herself a very proficient swordswoman. She had trained day and night for eight years to get to this skill level . . . but Loki had trained for thousands of years, whether it was with a sword or not and he was definitely beating her. Every thrust or jab he parried, even as she forced him back and he didn't even look worried. Olive persisted but he didn't budge, never gave her an opening. She swung her sword in a wide arch at his midsection but he dodged it.
"You are good," Loki responded. "But I'm better."
Then he attacked.
Olive had to grasp her sword with two hands as Loki swung the scepter at her, the clangs echoing through the room. It was all Olive could do to keep up with his attacks. Her arms were beginning to quake but she couldn't get tired; she refused to die here, not after everything.
The end of Loki's scepter caught Olive's hand, cutting it open, blood staining her glove. Olive barely had time to register her sword flying out of her hand, skidding across the floor towards Phil before Loki stepped up to her, back handing her across the face.
Olive felt her feet leave the floor as she was knocked back. She landed on her side and slid across the floor.
"Olive," Phil mumbled weakly. "Get out of here."
Olive looked up. She could feel blood running down her chin, knew she should listen to Phil but she didn't. She tried to crawl across the floor and grab her sword but then a boot stomped down on her wrist, causing her to cry out. Loki hmmed to himself. "You remind me of a woman I once knew."
His hand grabbed the back of her uniform, gripping the fabric and yanking her up off the ground. Olive cried out as he flung her across the room. Her body hit the ground again and then slammed into the wall. She tried to stand but couldn't. Her whole body felt like dead weight, broken.
"She is beautiful, a powerful warrior, fights better than most of the men her age." Loki's hand gripped Olive's hair and, as much as she didn't want to, she stood up. Loki grinned at her triumphantly as he moved his hand to her neck holding her pinned against the wall. "But she is also stubborn, doesn't know when to just lie down."
Olive spit the blood from her mouth at Loki. It was the most disrespectful thing she could think to do in her last moments and as she was out of other options . . . . "I think I like the sound of this woman."
Loki reached up, wiping the blood and spit from his face, glaring at her. But that glare changed back into a vindictive smirk as he chuckled. Olive frowned. "What's so funny?"
"Remember what I told you when we first met. I told you I was going to keep you. I am imagining the look on your Soldier's face when he's learned that he's lost you to me. When he's learned that I stole you right out from under him while he was off trying to save others. And now," Loki said, his laugh a little louder, "I am imagining the look on his face when you stab in the heart and laugh about it."
Olive did her best to appear unconcerned. "You can't control me. I'll never do what you say."
"Oh, I'm not going to control you. I'm going to set you loose. I can see it in you. The want to be free, to do bad. You're as bad as Bruce Banner, a monster who puts on airs. So I'm going to let you do just that. You will be born again, free of morals . . . Sigrid."
Loki's scepter glowed and the tip was pressed against her chest.
When Sigrid awoke she didn't feel as much had changed. She glanced down at her hand, still covered in a black fingerless glove which was covered in blood. Her hand still stung from the cut she had gotten but she could barely feel it. Actually, she could barely feel anything . . . no pain, no anger, no sadness. Earlier she had been sad, she could recall but now she felt nothing. She looked up through a haze of curls to see the one called Loki watching her smugly. She smirked at him. "Hello."
"Hello, Sigrid."
She stood up straight and sauntered over to where her sword lay. The man, Phil Coulson, stared up at her, his breathing shallow. "Olive. . . ."
Kneeling down, Sigrid picked up her sword and it's sheath, sliding the sword into its casing and clipping it to her back. Standing up straight, she looked back at Loki. "You've made quite a mess."
"As was my intention."
Sigrid glanced down at the agent again before turning back to the Asgardian. "How can I help?"
"I think we've accomplished all we need here. Why don't you go and fetch the remaining members of our party. It's high time we take our leave."
Sigrid smiled again. "Very well."
She took another step, pulled her gloves off and let them fall to the floor before she disappeared.
Steve watched the monitor, watched Olive step up to Loki, who was waiting for her. She placed her hand on his chest, he wrapped his arm around her waist. Both of them looked up at the camera and that's when Steve froze the image, looking into Olive's unnaturally blue eyes and the smirk on her face, a smirk he all at once recognized and didn't.
"You'll drive yourself crazy watching it." Steve looked up at Barton. The archer nodded at the screen. "She doesn't know what she's doing. Loki's got her wrapped up."
Steve remembered what Tony said. Loki had made it personal. Not just by killing Phil but then he took Olive. Steve unfroze the screen and watched as Olive disappeared with Loki.
"She knew something like this was going to happen," Steve responded.
"Olive's a tough kid," Barton told him. "Loki wouldn't have taken her if he didn't need her for something. I'm just saying, she'll still be alive," he added, when Steve cast him a look. "And if anyone can break the curse on her head, it'll be you."
Barton clapped Steve on the shoulder. Natasha looked back at them. "We're about 20 minutes out boys," she confirmed.
Steve stood up. He stopped for a moment, reaching down to pick up Olive's gloves, the ones he hardly ever saw her without, one of them ripped and both of them covered in blood.
He was going to get her back.
