Chapter 7: Fill Me In
True to his word, Jin made sure to show up to class on time for the past couple of days. Although he spends much of his time in class sleeping I can't say that it's much of a win. Since our encounter he's been calmer I haven't caught a glimpse of his temper or any of his dizzy spells which might mean that maybe he's got whatever it is out of his system... I hope. Jin's seat is a couple rows diagonally in front of mine, recently I've found myself staring at his back during class. He shifts a lot in his seat while he sleeps, it's almost surprising that no one really notices him. I wonder what he's dreaming about right now?
"Xiaoyu," the English teacher called signalling for me to stand up. "Read the next passage and give us your analysis."
"...Body cells replace themselves every month. Even at this very moment. Most everything you think you know about me is nothing more than memories...umm I think he means that he's no longer the same person he was last month. Since his cells continuously replace his ideologies, personalty, everything about him changes."
The teacher nodded in confirmation allowing me to sit down once again. I glimpsed back over at Jin thinking about that quote I just read out loud... even though he's been sitting right in front of me for some time every time I look at him he's not the same person. One moment he's sleeping shuffling in his sleep, then he's awake being chummy with everyone in class, then he's getting angry at Lee or someone. My encounters with him are never the same I feel like I'm always seeing a different side of him, I wonder which one is real?
"Alright guys that's the end of class everyone have a good lunch. Ahh Xiaoyu, Jin can you two come here for a second?"
We both walked up to the teacher's desk a little confused about what's going on. "I need you guys to return these books back to the library. They're kind of heavy so I figured you both could take a stack."
Jin stretched trying to wake himself up and reluctantly grabbed a stack and waited for me to grab the second one. He then led me out the door. We walked down the hall in silence for a moment. No casual conversation, no eye contact, just our shoulders lightly brushing up against each other every couple of steps. We have yet to talk about what happened in Shinsaibashi, even though I've seen him everyday our conversations have been brief or interrupted by someone. "So umm..." I began to speak trying to find something to say, but within a few moments we reached the library.
"We're here, what were you going to say?" Jin stood looking at me waiting for a response to his question but I quickly recanted.
"N-nothing..." I shock my head, silently cursing myself for letting my moment slip away again. We entered the library and Jin filled out the form for returning the books.
"Jin, we could use your help." The librarian asked. "We need to relocate some boxes and you seem pretty strong. I know it's during lunch but do you mind giving us a hand?" Jin nodded in agreement, "I'll see you after lunch then." We parted ways and I walked back down the hallway by myself. As I walked by myself I heard a voice call out from behind me, "Oh Xiaoyu just the girl I was looking for, could you give me a hand, I don't want to spill my lunch everywhere."
I turned around and saw Mr. Lee shuffling towards me with a bag lunch in one hand and a stack of papers in the other. I took the stack of papers from his arm and followed him back to his office. "Why were you looking for me sir?"
"Please no need for formalities Xiaoyu, I feel like we have more of a familial relationship than just teacher and student."
"Okay Lee, um why were you looking for me?" I asked while entering his office.
Lee took a seat at his office and directed me where to place the stack of papers, "I wanted to talk to you about your little outing in Shinsaibashi a couple days ago."
I stood frozen looking at him, "How did you know about that?"
"Come now I have my sources. I know you saw Jin's transformation that night."
I stood silent for a moment shocked by Lee's awareness of our encounter, "I'm not even sure what I saw that night. It was Jin but it wasn't Jin at the same time. I saw all this dark energy forming around him and he was transforming into something else... something evil. Since that night we never talked about it, or at least we never had a chance to talk..."
"What you saw last night wasn't Jin but a devil manifesting itself inside of him." I was shocked by his response and almost wished to not hear whatever else Lee had to say, "He seemed to "inherit" it from his father. Jin's mother was the only one who was able to suppress the evil inside of him. Since she's been gone the devil's power have been growing stronger inside of him and managed to break past the barriers she placed in his mind."
"Does he know about this himself?"
Lee shock his head no response, "He doesn't know what it is but I'm sure he has some clue that it's not something he can't stop. I can see it in him, everyday its becoming harder and harder for him to control." Lee saw the freighted expression and placed his hands on my shoulder, "I understand how you must feel; no one would blame you if you began to grow distant from him."
I looked up into Lee's eyes; he was right I am scared of Jin, but I can't back away from him especially after hearing this, "I'm scared to death of him; of what he could do but I can't force myself to leave a good friend behind in his time of need. He doesn't let anybody know his feelings, but I think he's just scared to let someone in. If there's a time when I have to let go of him well then, I'll cross that bridge when I get there."
Lee patted my head, "I'm glad Jin has someone like you. It won't be easy you know. Jin's built a door around his heart and hidden the key so well I don't even think he knows where it is."
"Well what am I supposed to do?"
Lee shrugged at me, "You tell me."
I went silent for a moment to think. I imagined myself standing in front of a locked door without a key and thought of a solution, "Then I'll just smash it open."
Lee was thrown back by my solution and laughed, "Seems like a good answer to me."
"Thanks Lee," I left on that note and returned back to class. There was still some time left before lunch was over.
"Hey Xiaoyu, where have you been? And where's Jin?"
"Sorry we both got a little caught up in some stuff, but I thought Jin would've been back by now... I guess he's still helping out in the library." I began eating my lunch talking to both Hwoarang and Lili. While I was laughing at Hwoarang's training stories with his master I looked out the window and caught the sight of Jin moving some boxes outside. He was sweating a little from moving all those boxes around. Before I could even realize it I was watching him, he was stretching after laying down the last box and in a moment he looked up and I swear we caught each others gaze. It was intense and it felt like we were looking at each other for eternity.
The bell rang for the end of the and seeing as this is the first time in a while that I don't have any after school activities I wanted to spend sometime hanging out with my friends. "Hey Lili do you have any plans for today. I feeling like eating some sushi today."
"Ahh- geez Xiaoyu I really want to go but I have plans with Hwoarang today..."
"Hwoarang, you two have been awfully close lately is there something you want to tell me?"
Lili's face grew a little red, "Well I mean its nothing serious- we're just having fun."
"I can't believe you're ditching me for Hwoarang, well who am I supposed to go with now?"
"Well how about Jin you guys haven't really been talking. This will give you guys some alone time." Lili winked at me as if she was accomplishing something great.
I looked over at Jin laughing with Hwoarang, I want to go with him but he's been so distant he'll probably say no.
"C'mon Lili nuged my shoulder lets go ask him." I followed behind her over to the guys.
"Hey are you ready," Hwoarang asked while reaching out for Lili's hand.
"Where are you two going," Jin asked also taking note of their interlocked fingers.
"We kind of made plans to hang out together today," Lili answered. "You know Jin, Xiaoyu said she wanted to get sushi today. You two should go together..."
Jin looked over at me as I tried to avoid eye contact with him, "We can go together." I was surprised by his agreement to go out with me, and Lili gave me a little nudge forward to stand closer to Jin.
The four of us walked to the train station before we parted ways. Jin and I got onto the train heading towards Osaka station. The train was crowded, with very little standing room. With each stop the train became more crowded and pushed me closer towards Jin. He placed his hand on my back to help me stifle my fall, "Ahh sorry." I apologized trying to put a little bit of distance between us.
We continued on the train for sometime watching people get on in off about 10 minutes before the last stop my phone began to vibrate several times. Lili was texting me:
"Hey how are you guys everything okay?"
Jin was preoccupied with his phone to even notice what I was doing, "I don't know we haven't said a word to each other since you guys left... I feel like he's annoyed with me (v^_^)v."
"He's probably just being shy, especially since you had to go out to Shinsaibashi for him. Just say something."
"He won't even look at me though..."
"Well make him look at you. He's probably just embarrassed or something don't be shy."
"We're here." Jin called. He grabbed my hand and lead me off the crowded train and outside of the train station. We walked for about a block to a sushi restaurant that was down a alley way. The restaurant was small and was very traditional, and looked a little expensive. The chief greeted us as we took our shoes off and sat at a table in the back.
"Have you been here before?" I asked noticing how formal all the employees were towards him.
"Yeah I used to come here with my grandfather back when I was living with him. The chief is a family friend of his so we usually get pretty good service here."
The waiter came by and set down some sushi and drinks for us. We ate in silence for a moment before I began to initiate conversation, "So how have you been feeling, do you still get dizzy spells?"
"No not really, I guess it was just a short time thing." Jin continued to eat without looking up from his food.
"So did you know about Lili and Hwoarang you know, going out?"
Jin chuckled at the thought of them, "I didn't think she would actually go out with him, but I figured something was going on between them."
"Why do you say that?"
"She's all Hwoarang could talk about since he first met her."
I started to pout a little, "Jealous Lili never mentioned anything to me about Hwoarang."
"She was probably just embarrassed." We both continued to make light conversation until we were both full off of sushi. Once Jin paid for the both of us, we went for a light walk through a park near the train station. We walked in an awkward silence for a moment before I started a conversation, "So are we going to talk about what happened that night?"
Jin put his hands in his pocket before answering, "What night...?"
"Ahh that night where I found you in Shinsaibashi and we fell into the ravine..."
"Hmm that night, what do you want to know?"
"Well what exactly is happening with you, and why have you been ignoring me?"
Jin sat down on a park bench and I sat beside him waiting for him to speak. He let out a deep breath before speaking, "I haven't been ignoring you I just don't know how to approach you anymore. You probably think I'm some sort of monster..."
"No I don't. I'm worried about you. Lili and Hwoarang, all of us are worried about you. It's so hard to talk to you because you constantly push us away. Sometimes I feel like we're friends and then other days it feels like we're strangers..."
Jin shuffled in his seat clearly uncomfortable by the conversation we're having, "There's something dark growing inside of me. I don't know how long this thing has been inside of me but I know that it's getting stronger as the days go by."
"What do you mean stronger?"
"I don't feel like myself lately, when I do get those dizzy spells and headaches its because I can hear this voice in my head trying to control me. Telling me to hurt people, that's why I've been fighting downtown to try and gain some control over it. I figured if I can defeat the strongest fighters I could satisfy its lust for power but I don't know... Come on let's continue walking."
We walked further into the park side by side and Jin stated, "You know I won't blame you if you're scared of me. I'm scared too..."
I grabbed Jin's hands out of his pockets and rubbed my thumbs over his palms, "I was scared, real scared when I saw it. But I don't think you're a monster…I don't know if I can help you but I'm not gonna abandon you." I stepped a little bit closer into Jin's space as he touched his forehead against mine.
"You're not scared, what if I try to hurt you?"
I thought about Jin's question for a moment. I truly was scared of what he could do at any moment he lost control but I know in my heart this is the right thing to do, "I trust you."
Jin chuckled a little, "You're so stupid." Jin pulled my face into his and placed a tender kiss on my lips.
