She frowns. But her face can't maintain its downward slant for long, and soon, she's fluttering about his head, laughing, toying with strands of his hair.
He huffs, feigning irritation, but she doesn't let him continue that façade for long.
Her feathers glint, illuminating the cavern. The air, thick with inky gloom, appears to brighten as she flits about the expanse. Her tone, hauntingly melodious, trails him as they scramble to his room, collapsing onto each other.
'They would never approve,' he tells her. For an instant, she's quiet. Her features dim; her smile wavers. Then she responds. 'That's just how little you know them.'
He wakes, alone.
Sleep merely provides reprieve from the fractured state of mind he's acclimated over the past years.
Darkness, its stench heavy and damp, festers within the cavern. It snakes up staircases and between crevices, looking to expel every stray bit of light it finds.
He rests his head on his palm. The bedsheets are home to only one, now.
