Chapter 13
The two stayed in that position for a few moments: Not moving, not breathing, not pulling away. In those few moments, Marceline forgot about everything as she soon molded into the kiss, ignoring the earlier minutes where she lashed out at her brother and called him an idiot. Kid cupped both of her cheeks and thanked himself that he wasn't encouraged to go further.
After those few moments, Kid finally pulled back for air, and he let go. Marceline blinked a few times, trying to take in what just transpired, and immediately noticed her brother's blushing face. "Um. . . ." She trailed off, unsure of what to say.
"I just. . . ." Kid trailed off as well. "I wanted to convince you that. . . . I loved you more than Patty, so. . . ." He stopped, hoping she would get his message.
She nodded in response before hugging him. He smiled and returned the hug, the two sitting on the bed in silence. Nuzzling his nose into her hair, he kissed the top of her head and sighed before the two siblings heard a knock on the door. The door cracked and Lord Death poked his head inside. "If you two are finished, I need to talk to you two about a job."
The two pulled away from their embrace and followed their father down the hall, with the girl's hand tightly clutching his.
The two siblings sat down at a table in the conference room and their father sat across from them. "So what did you want to talk about?" Kid asked.
"Well." Lord Death paused as he folded his hands. "I've heard reports of spiders invading Death City. But as far as I know, the witch Arachne was killed by Asura. But then I remembered that after her death, there are a few of her followers who believe it was I who had killed her."
"So they want revenge for their fallen mistress." Marceline figured out, and her father nodded. "And I believe one of her followers is in Death City. So I wanted you two to find this follower and eliminate him."
"But where will we find him?"
"That won't take long." Their father handed Kid an envelope and he raised an eyebrow as he took it. Opening the letter, he took out a small card and Marceline looked over his shoulder to read it. "An invitation?"
"Yes." Lord Death replied. "I received that invitation yesterday for a party of some sort, and it's from that same person. I believe he invited me so he could eliminate me. But as you may know, I'm not so easy to kill."
"So you want us to go to this party in your place, find this follower, and kill him?" Marceline asked.
"I think it's more like assassinate." Kid replied to her. "If we kill him out in the open, people might panic and think we might kill them too."
"So lead him to a room and then kill him?" Kid nodded. "But we have to be quick and silent. Causing noise would attract attention and then where would we be?"
"True." The female Reaper turned to her father. "Where is this party anyway?
"That's another reason why I'm sending you two." Lord Death replied. "The party is in France. As as you already know, I can't leave Death City." The two nodded before standing up and leaving the room.
"So when is this party anyway?" Marceline asked as she and her brother entered her bedroom. Kid sighed and sat on the bed, staring at the invitation. "Sunday night. What do you think people will say when they see two teenagers walk into an adult party?"
"We'll just say that we're his representatives." She replied while taking the card from him. She started to pace towards her closet and Kid gave her a look. "While we're on the subject, let's pick out what we'll wear that night. Sound good?"
Kid smiled in return. "Now that you mention it, yes. I wouldn't mind." His sister smiled back at him before throwing random dresses and outfits out of her closet.
That Sunday morning, the two were getting ready for the party: Kid was trying to fix his tie while Marceline was in the bathroom, straightening her hair and putting on mascara. She wore a black strapless shirt, a black elbow-length sweater, a black skirt with white frills at the hem, a pair of black flats, and a black choker around her neck with her father's emblem slapped on it. After making sure that everything was fine, she placed a white flower clip in her hair that also had her father's emblem in the middle, followed by two black ribbons.
She walked out of the bathroom to see Kid heading for the front door, dressed in a nice black suit. "Kid." He turned around and smiled at her appearance. "You look nice."
"Well we are supposed to blend in." She replied while closing the bathroom door behind her before starting to remove the blazer he had on. "You want to move around more right?" She asked, and he nodded in return, but took the blazer from her, placing it over his shoulders. "But we have to look professional." He ran his arms through the sleeves and straightened it. Marceline leaned in and buttoned it up and smoothed it out with a smile.
Before the two opened the front door, their father called out to them, running towards the two with camera in hand. "Now now you two," He pouted. "Why leave when I can't get a photo or two?"
"Dad." Kid gave him a straight face, not liking his father's behavior. In his opinion, Lord Death was thinking the two were going to prom instead of assassinating someone. "Please? One photo?"
Kid groaned in response while running a hand through his hair, before nodding. Lord Death smiled at the two before clapping his hands together. "Wait a minute. Something's missing." With a snap of his fingers, his emblem was slapped onto the left front of his daughter's skirt, and over his son's heart. "Perfect."
After a few quick photos, the two were on their way to Paris. "So where do you think we'll find him?" Marceline asked while sitting on her brother's skateboard and swinging her legs. She watched cities and towns pass below her, and smiled. Kid had his eyes on where they were going. "No idea," He replied. "But I don't think he'll try to stand out. Or, maybe he will."
"He'll probably want to stand out so he could have us lead him to Father." His sister replied to him. "After all, he does want Father dead."
"Whoever he is, we'll kill him first," Kid looked away to stare at her. "Do you have your blades?" The ravenette girl nodded before she reached out her hand, one of her blades materializing in front of them and she gripped it tightly. She turned back to him and smiled. "Are you good with knives?"
Kid shrugged. "Somewhat, but I try to have one with me in case I lose Liz and Patty."
"That's good." The two stayed silent for the rest of the trip, saving all talk for later. It was a long trip to Paris, so they might not get there until sunset. They may have a little time to look around and enjoy the sights, but they must not forget their mission to assassinate. Both siblings knew well what they were doing, but it was no big deal to them. All they cared about was not letting the other die.
Me: Damn this chapter took a while, but at least I finished it. I don't know where I got this idea, but I think it came from watching a lot of movies/shows where people get killed out of nowhere. Anyway until the next chapter, I'll check with you guys later.
