AN: Sorry it's taken me so long to get around to writing a new chapter, life and stuff gets in the way, I hope you understand. Well, here you go.

God of the New World

Light streamed through the window onto the bed. Light's eyes flickered open and squinted into the sunshine. He groaned as he sat up and took in his surroundings. The previous day's events ran through his head and he shuddered at the memory.

L had won. He had fucking won. Light didn't understand how the detective had instinctively known the Death Note was in his possession and he couldn't fathom why he didn't die when he was supposed to. Light looked deep into his mind and realized he wasn't as angry about it as he should be. Why didn't he feel a strong loathing for the man that had taken him off of his pedestal? Why did he actually feel a sense of relief?

He shook the thoughts away and got dressed. He left the guest room he was now occupying and headed to the investigation room. It was strange to be so empty, without the team there filling the silence. Without is father especially, scolding Matsuda for his antics. He felt a longing to see his father and family again, knowing that it would be an indefinite amount of time before he would be reunited with them.

L was crouching in front of his monitor, struggling to recover the lost data that Watari had erased in his moment of death. It was strange to see him without a cake and cup of coffee with a tower of sugar cubes next to it. L was almost half a man without Watari, not himself. Light felt a pang of regret but pushed it away immediately. Why should he feel bad about it? He was the God of this new world, after all. And a God makes decisions in the best interest of his world. Erasing L and Watari was his main goal for so long, and he only half accomplished it.

"Light, why don't you have a seat?"

L gestured to the chair next to him. Without thinking, Light sat down. He almost felt comfortable around the detective, having worked with him for so long, working with him to catch himself. What was he supposed to do now? It should be obvious that killing L would be goal number one, but something inside him encouraged him to think of a different path to freedom.

"So, where do we go from here?"

L's voice rang out in the quiet room, startling Light out of his deep thought.

"I honestly don't know, Ryuuzaki."

For once, he couldn't think of a plan. For the moment, honesty seemed the best route. L now knew everything. He now has proof that he is Kira. So the question is, why hasn't he turned him in yet?

"If I may ask… Why am I here? Why haven't you turned me in yet?"

L sucked on his thumb and stared at Light with his big, coal black eyes.

"I want to rehabilitate you."

Light was taken aback. Rehabilitate? There was no chance of changing him, he is God now and L can't, won't take that away from him.

"Well, good luck. I will find a way to around this trap and get back to ruling this new world, free of crime. Criminals are on the loose right now, and you are the only thing keeping me from judging them and cleansing the world, L." He used L's name in a firm voice and kept eye contact. Something in his stomach fluttered when L blinked at him, but he ignored it again.

"I have already won. You are not a God and never will be, Light Yagami. You are only human and I will show you that. You will learn; there is nothing you can do to stop human nature. I have been the world's best detective for years, catching criminals that no one else could stop. But even if you catch them all after the fact, they still have committed the crime and you can do nothing to prevent it. Even if you kill them, Kira."

"I HAVE found a way to prevent crime!" Light stood from his seat, hot from rage. "Executing the criminals teaches the people that they will pay for what they do, and it prevents them from even trying to test me. I am God, and they will listen to me and obey my law!"

L stared, sitting in the same crouched position as always, now chewing on his thumb. "I think Light needs to calm down, would you like a piece of cake?"

Light froze, amazed that L would say something so derogatory and… innocent. It was almost cute the way L stared longingly at the door to the kitchen, probably thinking of cake. Wait, cute? What the hell was he thinking? The flutters came back and Light blushed, sitting back down, immediately calmer.

"You didn't answer my question, would you like some cake?" L stood and slouched his way to the kitchen. Light stayed seated for a moment before slowly rising and following. What was he doing? He just gave a speech about how to fix the world and now he was getting cake. He was supposed to be God and was being treated like a child. But he was hungry, and cake sounded pretty good…

-8 Hours Later-

Light was sitting next to L in front of their computers, pulling files and relocating them. Files that he had helped create, files about him and the criminals he executed. His thoughts had been racing all day. How would he get away from L to continue his rule of the world? Misa was of no help, her memory had not yet been returned and he had seen her recently on the television doing a soda commercial. At least she was safe.

The only option that lay in front of him was to kill L, with his bare hands. But something in the back of his mind prevented him from trying. He kept thinking of different ways to escape, but only L knew the passwords to the locks in the building. He was stuck. He should force L to open the doors and then kill him. Take the Death Note and find Misa, returning her memories and continue ruling the new world. But as he looked over at the small creature chewing on his fingers and not blinking at the screen in front of him, he felt the flutters in the pit of his stomach again. What was happening to him? Where did his killing instinct go?

Without giving it a second thought, Light reached out and pulled L's finger from his mouth. "You're bleeding." He almost sounded like he cared.

"I know. It is a habit I have always had. Watari used to scold me and bandage my fingers…" He trailed off in a melancholy tone. Light looked down in shame, but struggled with himself as he felt he should be proud of taking down one of the people trying to stop him, but he only felt sadness that L was all alone now.

He continued his work, sipping on the coffee he had made himself that morning. It was cold, and he felt the same.

-8 Hours Later-

Light stretched his arms above his head and yawned. They had been at it all day and night, just staring at the monitors. His eyes ached and his head pounded. "I need sleep. I'll be back in the morning."

L didn't move or say a word as Light walked to the door. Light was still surprised that L hadn't tried to interrogate him or even restrain him. Maybe he really was just trying to rehabilitate him. It won't work.

"Goodnight, Ryuuzaki." He didn't even hear himself say it. It was a habit he had picked up while working with the team. Before he was caught… He needed sleep, a dark silence where no problems or enemies existed.

"Goodnight… Light."

As Light laid his head on his pillow, thoughts of L ran through his mind, and none were malicious. He was supposed to kill him, but why did that sound so… wrong, to him? He closed his eyes with the image of L eating cake, and he was lulled into peaceful sleep.

L sat crouched in his chair all night, no longer typing away on his keyboard or even looking at the screen. He sat there, chewing on his bloody fingers, wishing someone would come stop him. Even though he had spent most of his life alone in the dark, tonight felt especially lonely.
