When they finally reached campus again, Marceline cut the engine of her bike and the two girls dismounted.
"Well, I guess I'll see you soon?" Marceline sounded hopeful.
"Yeah." Bonnie smiled.
"Alright, well bye," Marceline said. For a moment, each of them wasn't sure if she should kiss the other. After an awkward hesitation Bonnie settled on a hug. Marceline had to stoop a good deal to hug Bonnie. She noticed that the hug went on a little longer than it should between friends.
"Bye," Bonnie said as Marceline got on her bike and put on her helmet. Marceline smiled her crooked smile and gave a little wave as she pushed off her bike. Bonnie watched as the motor revved and she disappeared down the street.
Bonnie sighed as she walked back to her dorm. Her head was swimming again now that she was alone. She wondered the meaning of their interaction last night, if it would happen again, and when she would next see Marceline. Her mind flickered back to the looming question of her own sexual orientation. She figured she would utilize her favorite method to solve any question—research.
That day when Bonnie got back to her dorm, she went on the computer and read several articles on sexuality and when people knew that they were gay. It was a fairly interesting topic, but it seemed that it was primarily a personal journey. The more she read, the more she thought that she couldn't be 100% straight. It was strange, thinking that she had felt straight her whole life and suddenly being confronted with the fact that she seemed to be developing a crush on a girl. Bonnie figured that she shouldn't jump to conclusions and that she would have to wait and see before she declared for sure what her sexual orientation was.
The next few weeks passed in a flurry of homework, tests, and papers. Marceline and Bonnie saw each other a few times but Bonnie's workload was becoming more intense. She was stressed from spending so many hours in the library and frustrated that she didn't get to spend more time with her friends.
One day in late October Bonnie was having dinner with Lady, Jake, and some of their other friends. That day she had just turned in a paper and had a test the day previous, so she was flat out exhausted.
"Bonnie. Earth to Bonnie. Helloooo!" Lady was waving a hand in front of her face. Bonnie snapped out of whatever haze she had been in.
"Sorry. Zoned out," She said, returning to her dinner.
Lady laughed. "I was saying, it's good to hang out with you. You've been so busy lately."
Bonnie laughed dryly. "Life of a biochem major."
"So, any plans for this weekend?" Lady asked expectantly.
"Umm… no, why? Is it special?" Bonnie was confused.
"Friday is Halloween, silly!"
"Oh, right." Bonnie had completely forgotten. "Is there anything happening?"
"There's a big dance on Friday, and we're probably going to throw a Halloween party and movie marathon, and I'm sure there will be a bunch of frat parties too." Shoot. I don't even have a costume.
"Thanks for reminding me, Lady. I'll have to figure out what I'm doing."
"You going to invite your lady friend?" Lady wiggled her eyebrows suggestively.
"Who, Marceline? We're just friends." Bonnie knew that was a lie but she wasn't ready to admit to it just yet.
"Sure. You two sure have been spending a lot of time together lately." Bonnie shrugged. "Fine. Don't acknowledge it. But just promise me that you won't desert us entirely!"
Bonnie chuckled a bit. "Of course not, Lady. I would never desert you and all my other friends."
With that, Lady seemed reassured, and resumed conversation about what their plans were for their own little Halloween party this weekend. Bonnie covertly (as to avoid the further teasing of her friends) texted Marceline to ask what her plans were. A few minutes later she received a reply.
From: Marceline
Didn't have much planned. Mostly just dress up and watch horror movies. You?
To: Marceline
Well, I know there's a big costume party dance on campus, and my friends are having a movie marathon that we could go to. What do you think?
Marceline replied that the costumed dance sounded fun, so she and Bonnie made plans to go to that. Unfortunately, Lady had noticed her sneaky texting by now.
"So, what are you doing on Friday then?" Lady looked expectantly in the direction of Bonnie's phone.
"We're going to the dance and then we'll probably come back to the suite and watch movies with you guys. Sound cool?"
"That's fine by me. The more the merrier." Lady smiled as Jake put an arm around her.
That night after dinner, Bonnie scoured her closet for something to wear to the costume party. Eventually she settled on dressing as a princess. She picked out her favorite fancy dress and heels. She knew the campus bookstore was selling some Halloween costumes and accessories, so she figured maybe she could pick up a crown there tomorrow after class. Bonnie went to bed satisfied that she had plans with Marceline for this weekend and even a decent costume.
Classes couldn't seem to go slower on Friday. Luckily Bonnie didn't have class very late, and a few of her professors seemed to lighten the homework load so that their students could enjoy the weekend. She was even able to find a tiara in the bookstore's Halloween section before she went back to her dorm. Bonnie recruited Lady to help her with her makeup. Bonnie was okay with makeup—she normally didn't wear a lot but she was able to do the basics. Lady, however, was great at it, and always made Bonnie look fantastic.
"You must want to impress her because you don't ask me for makeup help very often," Lady smirked as she applied Bonnie's eyeshadow.
Bonnie's defense was meager at best. "You're really good at makeup and I want to look cute, that's all."
"Sure, sure, that's what they all say." Lady clearly didn't believe her. Bonnie decided it was futile trying to fight her friend so she kept her mouth shut.
"There we go. All done. Take a look." Lady stepped aside so she could see.
Bonnie looked in the mirror. It wasn't often that she felt this pretty. Lady had given her a flawless face with foundation and then applied light pink blush and eyeshadow. Lady had employed the help of her signature black winged liner and several coats of mascara, and a bubblegum pink lipstick that matched Bonnie's hair.
"You did great, Lady. Thank you." She gave her friend a hug. "I guess it's time to get dressed."
Bonnie dashed to her room and donned her fluffy dress, heels, and for the finishing touch, her tiara. When Bonnie came out of her room to show Lady, her friend clapped in excitement.
"You look so cute, Bonnie! Man, now I wish I was your date!" Bonnie blushed and thanked her friend.
Bonnie sat on the couch waiting to get Marceline's text that she had arrived. Lady and some of her friends were hanging Halloween themed decorations when Marceline got to their suite.
When Bonnie opened the door, she was surprised to see that Marceline looked very in-character. She was wearing red contact lenses, her hair was styled differently and she wore a long black dress that came down to the floor. When she smiled Bonnie noticed she had even donned a pair of fake fangs.
"Hey Bonnibel. You look great," She said nonchalantly. Bonnie was still impressed by her costume. When Marcy had said she loved Halloween, she wasn't kidding.
"Thank you, Marceline. So let me guess, you're a vampire?"
"That's Vampire Queen to you, missy," She chuckled darkly. Her height combined with the costume made her look pretty imposing.
Marceline poked her head into the suite and dropped her bag by the couch as Bonnie ran to grab her purse. She waved to Lady as Bonnie said goodbye to her friend for the night.
"Take care of her!" Lady called after as they exited.
"Of course!" Marceline replied over her shoulder. As the suite door shut behind them, they began the walk to the center of campus.
Marceline and Bonnie caught up on the past week or so on the walk. When they arrived at the ballroom where the dance was being held, they waited in line for a little bit to get in. They could already hear the DJ's music from outside the venue. Marceline livened up the time by pointing out her favorite costumes.
Their hands were stamped by the volunteers who were working the dance and Marceline led the way into the dark ballroom. The music was loud and electronic, and you had to yell to be heard.
Marceline took Bonnie's hand and led them to the center of the crowd. It was hot and cramped, and Bonnie was suddenly glad that she wore a short dress. She started to dance and asked Marceline why she had dragged them into the center.
"It's more fun in here!" Marceline shouted close to Bonnie's ear. The two girls danced and Bonnie surveyed the environment. It was interesting for people-watching. Lots of very revealing costumes, drunk people, and a few couples nearby were making out. She turned back to her friend, pointing out a few of the funniest couples.
"C'mon Bonnie, dance!" Marceline shouted a few minutes later. Bonnie laughed and asked if her dancing wasn't good enough. Marceline grabbed both her hands and began to move them back and forth in an effort to get Bonnie to dance more. Soon the two girls were having their own little dance off with who could have the weirdest moves, and they both ended up in stitches.
Bonnie fanned her face as she tried not to cry from laughing so hard. "You're so weird!" She yelled at Marceline.
"What?" The other girl yelled back. She bent down so Bonnie could say it again closer to her ear.
"You're WEIRD!" Bonnie cupped her mouth with her hand. Marceline just laughed. She smiled that crooked smile again, and Bonnie could only think of how cute it was.
She reached out to Marceline, her limbs seemingly acting independently of her mind, and intertwined their fingers. Marceline didn't resist. They danced like that for a few minutes until Marceline couldn't take it anymore. She slipped her hands around Bonnie's waist and pulled her close. As she looked into Marceline's eyes she seemed to forget about everyone else in the room. She wrapped her arms around Marceline too and closed the remaining gap between them. The feeling of their hips grinding together made her heart start to flutter.
Several songs later, Marceline bent down to kiss Bonnie. Their lips met and parted a few times before Marceline got close to Bonnie's ear and suggested they get out of there. Bonnie agreed and Marceline led her by the hand out of the crowd. Once they were out in the open, Marcy didn't let go. They held hands and walked quietly all the way back to Bonnie's dorm. Bonnie was glad when she finally reached home, as her heels had begun to give her blisters.
"Hey, back so soon?" Lady asked as Bonnie entered the suite with Marceline in tow. The two girls dropped hands.
"Yeah, it was crowded and sweaty and had a lot of people making out," Bonnie explained as she kicked off her shoes. Marceline went into the bathroom to get changed and Bonnie changed into her pajamas and wiped off her makeup in her room. Bonnie grabbed a blanket from her bed and she and Marceline claimed a corner on the couch to share as they joined in on the horror movie their friends had started watching.
At first they sat close but not touching. Bonnie's heart fluttered when she felt Marceline's fingers barely brush her leg as she shifted to get more comfortable. It was such a slight touch that Bonnie wasn't sure if it was purposeful or not. Bonnie tilted her head so that it rested on Marceline's shoulder. Marcy shifted closer so that she would be more comfortable and then she started to stroke Bonnie's hair. Bonnie's heart was racing again. She tried her best to focus on the movie.
All Bonnie could think about was the dance, and the two of their bodies drawn close together. She thought about kissing Marceline, and if it would happen again. She really liked that. Bonnie's fingers reached Marceline's arm and she softly traced little circles against the older girl's skin. Her eyes fluttered closed as she relaxed.
"Bonnie? Bedtime?" Marceline was gently tapping Bonnie's shoulder. The pink-haired girl looked up to see the TV was off and Jake and Rainy were sleeping on the couch. She nodded wordlessly and began to make her way to her room.
"Do you want me to stay?" Marceline asked.
"Yeah." The thought of having Marcy in her bed again made her heart skip a beat, but she only hoped it wasn't too obvious.
Marceline went to the bathroom to get ready for bed as Bonnie proceeded to her room. She climbed up her ladder and settled in for the night. A few minutes later, she heard a click as Marcy locked the door behind her. The older girl scaled the ladder gracefully and snuggled in next to Bonnie. She was suddenly grateful that she wouldn't have to worry about her roommate tonight. Marcy positioned herself to be the big spoon, but the girl's arms around Bonnie's waist were too much of a temptation. Bonnie turned around so that they faced each other. Their arms wrapped around each other's waists and when each saw the look in the other's eyes, there was little hesitation. They wasted no time as their lips crashed together, and Bonnie felt Marceline pulling her closer. Bonnie rearranged her legs so that they were entwined with Marcy's. She felt free to let her hands travel as she pleased. She grasped at every inch of Marceline that she could. Suddenly in a surge of confidence she shifted on top of Marceline. She began to kiss down her neck, around the line of her tank top, and down each of her arms. She tried to discern the girl's soft spots as she listened to her reactions. A little moan here, or a sigh there told Bonnie that she was doing it right. When Bonnie reached her neck once again, she picked a spot and began to nibble and suck like Marcy had done to her before. This elicited quite the reaction from Marcy, who grabbed Bonnie's hips and grinded into them. In a smooth motion, Marceline shifted their weight so she was on top. Bonnie tangled her hands in Marcy's long hair and their lips met again. Marceline grabbed her face as their kisses became more urgent, almost hungry. She dropped her hips onto Bonnie's and began to grind them together once again. Bonnie could feel her body warming and she hoped she wasn't blushing. Her hands moved over Marceline's back and down to her hips. Marceline took Bonnie's hands and pinned them over her head. With one hand holding her wrists, her other hand traveled to Bonnie's side. Her kisses started to travel down again, and when they reached her cleavage Bonnie sighed. Marceline paused and looked up, asking permission to go further.
"Wait." Bonnie pulled back and Marceline sat up. "I really want to continue, but I think we should talk."
"Ok, shoot," Marceline said, releasing Bonnie as each of them sat up.
"Well, I guess I'm just wondering—what are we?" Bonnie asked. The question seemed to take Marceline aback.
"What do you mean?"
"Well, I don't feel like you're my 'friend' because there's so much more than that, and… I really like you, and I love spending time with you, but all of this making out is confusing…are we dating?"
"Would you like to be?"
Bonnie pondered for a moment. "Yes. " A moment of silence ensued as the two girls absorbed their mutual feelings of wanting to be in a relationship. "Marceline, will you be my girlfriend?"
Marceline grinned. "Of course, silly." She leaned down to kiss Bonnie and they tangled together once again, but the urgency was no longer present. They felt that they had all the time in the world, and they kissed each other slowly and sweetly before settling in a comfortable position to go to sleep. As Marceline's head rested on Bonnie's chest and Bonnie stroked Marcy's hair, each girl thought that this must be the best feeling in the world.
