Commanding officer Yukoko carefully put down the paper she had been handed. She looked at the young cadet that had just delivered it to her.

"And they specifically said that these were the only surviving soldiers left on this mission?" she asked inquisitively.

"Yes Commander! Sergeant Major Giroro and First Sergeant Natsumi are currently attempting to secure their location in order to ensure their reinforcements safe arrival, Sir!" the Cadet saluted nervously. She chuckled as she thought of the two officers he'd remembered the day they had handed down the verdict of former Dangerous Pekoponian Slave X814 Natsumi, she had remained in the background that day but had played a big part in the decision of the young girl's fate. Now five years later not only was Natsumi one of the best soldiers in the army, she was the envy of most Keronian women. She had assimilated into their society perfectly; no one even batted an eye at the fact that she was a Pekoponian anymore.

The Commander glanced at the paper once more before addressing the cadet once again.

"Worry not Cadet, these two are the finest pair of soldiers around, and what's more they are even more fierce when they are backed into a corner." she smiled wickedly remembering the power of Natsumi and Giroro's coup de grace when in battle.

"If you don't mind me asking Commander, why do this Pekoponian and one of our own work so well together? Isn't it an odd pairing?" The fact that this young cadet must not only be new to the army, but also new to the area, became painstakingly obvious. The Commander burst out laughing and when she finished she answered.

"Why young Cadet it's because they are husband and wife! Would you not fight harder than anything to protect the one you love most?" the little Keronian froze in shock but blushed when he realized his ignorant error.

Although a good part of it may also be about Haruru… The Commander thought to herself.

Meanwhile…

Giroro and Natsumi had their backs to the wall of their muddy trench. The rain was pouring down, making everything slick. Their enemies only a few yards away, they were backed into a corner. Natsumi dug around in her pack for another magazine of ammo and tossed it to Giroro, then she pulled out one for herself. She breathed heavily as she discharged the empty magazine from her weapon and loaded the new one.

"How many more of them are there?" She asked Giroro, he had finished reloading his weapon as well. Looking down the iron sights he shifted the weapon in his hands.

"A couple dozen or so, maybe more." he stated matter-of-factly. He pulled some grenades from his own pack and handed a few to Natsumi.

"I think we have a few more moments before we need to get back up there, else they'll be on us before we can try and find our Gods." Giroro latched his pack closed. The supplies they carried were all they had; the atmospheric barrier disrupts the usual form of arsenal he prefers to carry.

"I'm ready when you are." Natsumi spoke whilst slipping a locket she wore around her neck back under her gear. Giroro noticed it and smiled. They leaned in closer to one another and shared a deep kiss. Smiling they leaned their foreheads together.

"We're such terrible soldiers, kissing on the battlefield like this." Natsumi chuckled. Giroro let out a snort of his own.

"Yeah coz these promotions we keep getting show everyone how bad we are at our jobs." he laughed once more. They kissed one more time before climbing up to the edges of the trenches, planting their weapons on the ground, keeping their bodies hidden in the wall of earth. Instantly gunfire erupted on the field, Natsumi threw the first grenade towards enemy lines. Her keen eyes catching their movements in the trees ahead of them, she fired off bursts of rounds taking out one enemy after another.

Natsumi smiled as a thought came into her head. (Youtube Danger Line) She began to hum loudly, in tune to the rhythm of her fire rate. Giroro recognized the tune immediately. Getting caught up in her little tune he began to fire his weapon in succession to hers. As the beat of the song picked up so did their gun fire. Each one taking a different part now they fired away taking down their enemies in rapid speed. Giroro had begun to hum as well.

Another grenade was thrown, the enemy ceased their fire to attempt an evasion. Giroro and Natsumi paused as well.

"My sixteen locked and loaded, all fear has been aborted. You say the words and my weapon is drawn." Giroro sang as he reloaded his weapon. Natsumi sang along as she reloaded as well.

"This one could be my last time, some people call it "war crime", I may be staring down a lethal sight." Natsumi's higher pitch carried across the battlefield. They sang together in unison.

"To die." part was a whisper, but loud enough to carry in the air. The enemy began to move again, and that was when they resumed their attack.

Firing away again this pace much faster they continued to sing loudly, confusing and quite frankly frightening their enemies.

"Nothing shocks you like a bullet hole." Giroro sang the line as he buried a bullet into the chest of an enemy, which looked down at his bleeding torso in absolute horror. The irony did not escape Natsumi.

"Leaving my fear on the danger line." she sang as she took out an enemy sniper. Giroro pulled the pin from another grenade with his teeth, throwing this one did not cause as much of a panic.

"Suffering a man should never know." Natsumi continued the song; Giroro spat the pin out of his mouth and sang the next line.

"Leaving my faith on the danger line." Giroro took the head off an infantry soldier too close to the edge of the trees.

Giroro and Natsumi slid down into the trench again to reload, standing instead of sitting. They were on a roll and continued their song.

"I do this for my family, my daughter loves her daddy." Giroro sang and Natsumi clasped her hand around her locket once again. She closed her eyes and smiled peacefully and somewhat sadly.

"Too many talk down on things they don't know." she tucked the locket into her shirt this time; they jumped back up and began firing again. More enemies began arriving to the field from their own trenches.

"With colors never faded, reckless and unabated, they may take me but never take us all." Giroro half sung half shouted the end of the line, a bullet grazing his shoulder but not heavily wounding him. He clenched his teeth and joined Natsumi as she lined up the RPG she had lifted from the trench.

"I'll crawl." they whispered as she fired the RPG into the tree line, sending several enemies flying from the blast. She switched weapons back as she would have to slink back into the trench to reload the RPG but she would wait for Giroro before heading down again.

"Nothing shock you like a bullet hole." She sang the line with a smile on her face thinking of how an RPG could usually do a pretty good job of that as well.

"Leaving my fear on the danger line." Giroro kept firing to the tune of the song. Natsumi threw one of her grenades next.

"Suffering a man should never know." she aimed down her sights once she heard the enemies shout out the presence of the grenade.

"Leaving my faith on the danger line." Giroro finished the chorus. The enemy fire slowed down as they attempted to regroup.

"I know what you're thinking, I've been there before!" Natsumi shouted towards them.

"So think of the times, the time we spent laughing away." Giroro let out a laugh as he sang the line.

"So think of the times, at home." Natsumi glanced at Giroro while she fired away at the enemy. He blushed as they sang in unison.

"Life without a care." Natsumi smiled widely returning to her attack. Giroro paused briefly to touch his hand to his wound. It was bleeding, but nothing life threatening.

"Now I find myself in my own blood. Never thought I'd lie in my own blood." he looked at his stomach to see the trickling blood lightly coating the ground underneath him. Natsumi scowled deeply seeing his wound still bothering him.

"The damage done is far beyond repair." she fired angrily this time, taking out two enemies at once.

"I never put my faith in up above, never put much faith in up above." She sang glancing at the skies hoping for signs of their reinforcements.

"But now, I'm hoping someone's there." Giroro sang the line as they slid back into the trench. The enemy was still for a moment.

"I never meant to leave this world alone." Natsumi held his hand and inspected his wound as they continued to sing.

"I never meant to hurt the ones who cared. And all this time I thought we'd just grown old. You know, no one said it's fair." he caressed Natsumi's face his eyes saying he was ok, it was only the tactic of the song that made it sound like things were worse than they were.

"Tell my baby girl that it's alright, I've sung my last song today. Remind the Lord to leave his light on, for me." He lifted up his weapon and Natsumi nodded in agreement.

"I'm free…" as Giroro sang the last line they hopped up again and unloaded their RPG ammo on the enemy soldiers, wiping them and the tree line out. Using their original weapons they picked off the remaining enemies still to the tune, and to top it off they whistled.

When the last enemy was killed he could be heard screaming, "What the hell is wrong with you people?!" Natsumi and Giroro high fived each other just as their reinforcements arrived. They were greeted loudly and began to discuss the next course of action with the commander of the reinforcements. They would regain the planet before the day was though.
