Chapter 16
Here She Is
Shane jumped out of bed and helped Mitchie. They were just about to the door to the garage when Nate stopped them. "What happened I heard Mitchie scream?" he asked.
"Not now, Nate! We're going to the hospital!" Shane told him. They got in the car and drove to the hospital, fast. They got through the huge white doors and somehow, neither one of them could remember how they got in the hospital room they laid Mitchie down in.
"I don't understand… she's supposed to be coming in three weeks!" Mitchie told the doctor. He told her he was sorry, but sometimes that just happened.
She looked over at Shane, who was sitting in an armchair next to the bed. He smiled weakly at her, like something was wrong.
"What's wrong, Shane?" his wife asked. A tear fell down his face. He knelt down beside the bed and took Mitchie's hand.
"Come back to me… promise?" he said, a little shakily. She stared at him, wanting to comfort him and tell him it was going to be okay. But she didn't know if it was.
"Promise me, Mitchie!" he said urgently. She nodded slowly and pulled him into a hug. Shane slightly loosened his grip on her and kissed her passionately. Then he felt tears touching his cheeks from Mitchie's.
"You'll be okay, baby." He told her, stroking her arm. She nodded again. Mitchie tried to search for the answer in his eyes, because whenever she was scared he made it okay. But she couldn't find it.
Suddenly, the doctor came rushing in with a clipboard. The baby was hurting her so bad. She felt so weak at the moment. "Mrs. Grey! The baby is coming impossibly fast! We need to go into the delivery room now!" the doctor said, pushing her bed (it had wheels) through the hallway. Shane had to run to keep up, but he did. He held Mitchie's hand the whole way.
Mitchie's pain ached in every place possible, and she was scared to death. She looked up at Shane. There were tears running down his face. He squeezed her hand. "Here we go…" he said, sobbing.
"I love you, Shane…" Mitchie said, losing her breath.
More tears ran down his face. "I love you too, baby…" he said crying harder.
Within an hour, Mitchie was pushing. Shane held her hand almost too tight all the way through. And then it happened, the doctor then had a beautiful baby in his hands. Some doctors helped with the baby, and some with Mitchie.
The fifty percent of dying had come. Mitchie's open eyes slowly disappeared. Her body wouldn't move another inch. She tried to say Shane's name, but her mouth was dry, and her lips wouldn't move.
Her eyes were closing and her head was tilting to the side. The doctors checked her heart beat. "Get the wires! Now! We have to try!" screamed one doctor. Shane jerked his head back to Mitchie. Her eyes were almost closed.
"Mitchie!! Don't you dare leave me! You promised! Don't leave, Mitchie! Please!" Shane screamed, shaking in fear. Her eyes opened a bit more, but not much. "Mitchie…" he kept repeating. Her eyes were then almost closed, and the machine that rated her heartbeat was barely moving. His face and shirt were covered in his sweat and tears. Then he had an idea.
"If
the heart is always searching,
Can you ever find a home?
I've
been looking for that someone,
I'll never make it on my own
Dreams
can't take the place of loving you,
There's gotta be a million
reasons why it's true.
When you look me in the eyes,
And
tell me that you love me.
Everything's alright,
When you're
right here by my side.
When you look me in the eyes,
I catch a
glimpse of heaven.
I find my paradise,
When you look me in the
eyes.
How long will I be waiting,
To be with you
again
Gonna tell you that I love you,
In the best way that I
can.
I can't take a day without you here,
You're the light that
makes my darkness disappear.
When you look me in the eyes,
And
tell me that you love me.
Everything's alright,
When you're
right here by my side.
When you look me in the eyes,
I catch a
glimpse of heaven.
I find my paradise,
When you look me in the
eyes.
More and more, I start to realize,
I can reach my
tomorrow,
I can hold my head up high,
And it's all because
you're by my side.
When you look me in the eyes,
And tell
me that you love me.
Everything's alright,
When you're right
here by my side.
When I hold you in my arms,
I know that it's
forever.
I just gotta let you know,
I never wanna let you
go.
When you look me in the eyes
and tell me that you love
me.
Everything's alright,
When you're right here by my
side.
When you look me in the eyes,
I catch a glimpse of
heaven.
I find my paradise,
When you look me in the eyes.
Oh…"
Shane sang the song that reminded him of how much he needed Mitchie.
Her eyes closed, but a smile spread across her face. Shane looked at
her through teary eyes and squeezed her hands extremely hard. She
attempted to sit up, but she couldn't, so Shane and the doctors
helped her.
Shane sat next to her and put his arm on her shoulders when one male doctor brought their new baby girl to them. Once she was placed in Mitchie's arms, she started crying.
"We need to know the name so we can make a birth certificate, please." said a particularly old nurse. Shane and Mitchie looked at each other. They hadn't even thought about names.
Then they both had the same thought. "We'd be nowhere without music… we owe it so much…" Mitchie stated. Shane agreed.
"Harmony."
