Darkness Rising
Prologue
Boom! That sound, what was it? Ben got out of his bed and stood up. His black hair that covered his eyes fell down. He straightened out his night cloak and yawned. His eyes were adjusting to the darkness when he heard a scream. "That sounded like my mother," he thought. He raced out of his room and into the hall. He grabbed a lamp from a table and lit it with a piece of charcoal that was laying next to the lamp. He ran into his parent's room and found his mother lying in a pool of blood. There were slash marks across her face. "What kind of monstrosity could have done this?" he asked himself. He then thought of his father and little sister. Could they still be alive? He went into the main living room and found his sister lying in blood, just as his mother was. Suddenly, he heard a crash from the kitchen. He was about to burst in there when his father flew through the doorway.
"Father! What's going on?"
"There's not much time to talk. There's a fire demon loose. Here, take this." Ben's father handed Ben a butcher knife. "We're going to have to take it out," he said as he took a dagger out from his pocket. "Now, come on. Follow my lead." Ben's father ran into the kitchen and stabbed the demon in the forehead. Like all demons, it was rather large, and had sharp claws on it's hands and feet. The demon stumbled back a little, and then got enraged. It shot flames from it's palms at Ben's father. He ducked and rolled back through the doorway to the main living room.
"That's not much of a lead to follow," Ben said, hoping to lift their spirits. It didn't work, however.
"This is serious. I need to know you're committed to taking this thing out."
"Of course I'm committed. It's just-" his sentence was cut short by another fire blast. The demon charged at Ben's father, giving Ben an open shot. He crushed the butcher knife into the back of the demon's head. The fire demon roared with rage.
"It's time for a special technique!" Ben's father shouted. "X2 Fist! Art of Speed!" He leaped at the demon, and punched with 2 times the speed he normally would have. The demon took hit after hit, until it finally fell. "Finally," said Ben's exasperated father. "Now we need to figure out why the demon attacked us. We're still in danger. You know-" Ben's father was cut short by the fire demon. It shot out a dying blast of heat as a last move before it died. Ben's father flew up at the ceiling, then fell back down.
"Fa-father? Father!" Ben ran over to his father whom was lying on the ground. "Father, you'll be alright. I'll just patch you up and-"
"No," his father groaned. "I'm as good as dead. You have to flee."
"No, I can't. I can help you, please, just let me help you." Tears were running down Ben's face by now.
"No, now listen to me. I don't have much time. You have to leave immediately. In the closet you'll find a sword. Go to the inn in Kajunsky."
"And do what?" Ben asked.
"Form a squad . Fight the evil that's spreading throughout this land. Defeat the darkness, Ben. You are the chosen one. Give the world light. And never forget, never give up-" and with that, he died.
"No!" Ben yelled. "What do you mean I'm the chosen one? What were you talking about?" But there was no answer. Ben, realizing his family's murder, knew his father was right. He had to exterminate the darkness and bring peace to the land. He went to his parent's closet and opened it. He found the sword and took it. It was in it's sheath, which was just black leather. He took the sword out and examined it. It was in good condition for it's model, the problem was that it was a cheap sword. "It would do fine for now," he thought. He sheathed the sword and with a tear in his eye, he headed to Kajunsky without looking back.
