Chapter 15; The Mission
(Everest leads the group, plowing her way to the house)
(Ryder and Chase are driving next to each other)
Chase: Hey Ryder, Marshall is kinda being crazy again.
Ryder: Yeah, I noticed. He's just really excited. I mean, he's been out for over a month, so I can't blame him.
Chase: You're right. But, he reminds me of when he was a puppy and Wass bouncing off of the walls during missions when he would almost get hurt. And I don't want to see him get injured again.
Ryder: I know. Thanks for letting me know, though. I can talk to him and hopefully solve the problem but right now, you focus on what you're about to do.
Chase: Yes, sir!
*Meanwhile*
(Marshall and Rubble are behind Chase and Ryder, driving next to each other)
Marshall: I'm so excited to finally go on a mission!
Rubble: I'm excited for you too! We know how much you've missed it.
Marshall: Yeah, I missed it a lot!
Rubble: Hey, listen, I'm sorry for making things awkward earlier today. I could have just told them what actually happened instead of leading them on, and I'm sorry. I hope I didn't make things between you and Everest.
Marshall: Thanks! You want to know something crazy that happened after?
Rubble: What?
Marshall: You promise you won't tell anyone?
Rubble: I promise! Now, what did you do?
Marshall: I bet you could never guess.
Rubble: Just tell me!
Marshall: Okay, okay… I kissed Everest…
Rubble: No way! Are you serious?!
Marshall: Yeah! It was so awesome!
Rubble: But how did you manage to keep Ryder from seeing you?
Marshall: Skye helped me with that part.
Rubble: Wow! I'm so happy for you!
Marshall: Thanks!
Rubble: You're not mad about the whole problem, right?
Marshall: Nope!
Rubble: So, you're not going to get payback of some sort.
Marshall: Nah.
Rubble: Oh, okay…
(Ryder calls all the pups with him on their collars)
Ryder: Hey, pups, listen. We need to secure the area, find anyone in the house, and then put out the fire.
All the pups: Got it!
Ryder: Marshall, I know you're excited, but you need to calm down enough to think straight. I don't need you getting injured on your first day back.
Marshall: Yes, sir!
Ryder: Alright, let's do this!
(They all pull up to the house)
Ryder: Chase, use your cones to close the roads off.
Chase: Yes, sir!
(Chase throws his cones out on the road, stopping all traffic)
Ryder: Marshall, get to work!
Marshall: I'm fired up!
(Marshall starts to get his truck and sets up the hose)
Ryder: Everest, be ready to go. If there is someone inside, we might need you.
Everest: You got it!
Ryder: Chase, fly your drone and uses the thermal to see if you can see anyone inside.
Chase: Chase is on the case!
(He launches his drone to see if anyone is inside)
Chase: Ryder, there's too much fire. I can't use the thermal.
(Ryder grabs his pup pad and calls Skye)
Ryder: Skye, I need you and your chopper to fly over and see if you can see anyone inside.
Skye: This pups gotta fly!
(Skye gets in her vehicle and heads over)
Skye: Ryder, I can't see anything. There's too much smoke.
Ryder: Then I guess we're going in. Rubble! I need you to get the door open and be ready in case we need your help if something collapses.
Rubble: Rubble on the double!
(Rubble takes his bulldozer and knocks down the front door area)
Ryder: Everest! Be ready in case we need you up top. We may need you for medical attention. Skye! Be ready in case we need to get out through the air.
Skye: You got it!
Ryder: Chase! Take over the hose! Marshall! You're with me. Let's split up and search for people inside!
Marshall: I'm ready for a Ruff Ruff Rescue!
(Ryder and Marshall get a mask from Marshall's truck)
Ryder: Alright, it's a full one story and half of a second story. I'll start down here. You go up and make sure the top is cleared. And use your water cannons to put out any fire in your way.
Marshall: You got it! (He takes off towards the stairs)
(Ryder is looking when he hears a cracking noise from upstairs)
Ryder: Skye, make sure the roof isn't caving in right now. Marshall is up on the second floor.
Skye: On it!
Marshall: (Walking through a hall upstairs) Hello? Anyone there? I'm here to help!
(A beam in the roof cracks, and it makes Marshall jump)
Marshall: Ah! Oh, heh…
Skye: Ryder, the roof is starting to crack!
Ryder: Marshall, you need to pick up the pace!
Marshall: I've almost cleared the whole top. Just two rooms left.
Ryder: You better hurry!
Marshall: (Starts to run) Hello? Is anyone up here?
(Marshall goes into the last room)
*Meanwhile*
(Ryder's looking through the first floor of the house)
Ryder: Anyone in here? I'm here to save you!
(Behind a door is the faintest sound of someone calling for help)
Ryder: Don't worry! I'm coming to save you!
(Ryder takes the axe he had and starts to break down the door)
(He breaks it enough to climb in)
(Ryder gets inside the room to see a teenage girl hiding under her desk)
Ryder: I found a person. I have her now, and I am on the way to the front door. Chase, can you make sure I can get out?
Chase: You got it!
Ryder: (Talking to the girl) Is there anyone else here?
The girl: No, they aren't here right now.
Ryder: Okay. Here, put this on. It will keep you from breathing in a bunch of smoke.
Ryder: Marshall, I found a person. She said she was the only one, so let's get going.
Marshall: Okay! I'm about to head back do… *Crack* Woah!
(The floor gives out from beneath Marshall, and he falls into Ryder's hands, who just so happened to be directly below him)
Marshall: Good catch!
Ryder: No problem. Couldn't see you get injured on your first day back.
(Marshall stays in Ryder's arms)
Ryder: Um… You can get down now…
Marshall: Oh yeah! Heh heh!
(The girl giggles at Marshall)
Ryder: Alright, now let's get out of here. Marshall, lead the way!
Marshall: Arf Arf! Water Cannon!
(Marshall helps them out of the house by clearing a path to the front door)
(They emerge from the building to see a crowd of people watching from a distance)
(When they walk out, everyone starts to cheer)
(They all take their mask off, which allows the reporters to take photos of them)
Ryder: Jobs not done yet! We still need to put this fire out!
Ryder: Everest, do a checkup on her vitals. Make sure she is in good enough condition to wait.
Ryder: Skye, go get water with your chopper to help put out the fire.
Skye: This pups gotta fly!
Ryder: Marshall, get up close with your water cannons, but please don't get hurt.
Marshall: Got it! I don't have plans to get hurt anyway!
Ryder: Well, I would hope not!
