"…And I'll never forget how helpful good old Lewis was in explaining the accounting procedures on my first day at work. He made me feel welcome, and I'll always remember him for that," Donna said. She rather liked how the microphone amplified her voice. She smiled widely at the guest-of-honor, Lewis, who looked completely befuddled.
"Donna!" the Doctor hissed from just offstage. She just smiled and waved at him dismissively.
"But we won't talk about the stories he would tell over lunch, now, will we?" She winked at poor old Lewis, who looked even more uncomfortable. His wife was glaring at him. Donna could see some of the other guests whispering to each other. Probably wondering who the hell she was, she thought, trying not to laugh. All it had taken was a few minutes talking to the bartender to give her enough information for an impromptu speech.
"Donna!" the Doctor repeated, more insistently. She saw him smile nervously at the guests before fixing her with a look that suggested she should wrap it up.
"He will be sorely missed, and I don't know how we shall do without him So, here's to Lewis!" she finished, raising her glass. Most of the guests lifted their glasses in response, and Donna quickly handed off the microphone. The Doctor took her hand, pulling her from the stage.
"I thought we had decided not to gatecrash the party!" he whispered to her.
"Oh, come on. Now they're sure to remember the party. All of the other speeches were so dull!" Donna waved at Lewis, who waved uncertainly back. His wife smacked his arm.
The Doctor laughed. "You might have caused a bit of a tiff, though."
"Oh, dear," Donna said. She hadn't thought of that. "Well, one way to take care of that," she said, turning to the Doctor.
"What's that?" he asked.
She didn't answer, just grabbed the lapels of his jacket and pulled him to her, ignoring his squeak of surprise as she kissed him thoroughly. She pulled back, grinning.
He blinked at her in surprise. "What was that?"
"Just letting her know I'm taken, and that I'm not a threat. Got a problem with that?"
"No. I mean, no, not as such." He ruffled his hair. "I don't suppose, that is, do you think--"
"What?"
"Maybe one more kiss, just to really convince her?"
"Well, maybe that would be alright. Just to convince her," Donna said, smiling. He put his arms around her, and she closed her eyes as he lowered his lips to cover hers.
He stopped just short of kissing her, and whispered, "So, you're taken, are you?"
"Shut up and kiss me, spaceman."
