This has been something that has been eating at me for a while and a tried to find the right way to word this. It's a unique idea where Harry rejects his magic resulting in severe consequences. There is more at the bottom. This is just a one-shot pitching off an idea/challenge for those who are interested. Hope you enjoy it.
At the headmaster's office at Hogwarts sat a hat, it was battered and old. It was also patched, frayed, and extremely dirty. This was no ordinary hat as it was none other than the sorting hat of Hogwarts. It was created by the founders of Hogwarts to sort each student into the right house that would bring out their true potential. It did its job with no mistakes but that was until the founders all died, that's when the future headmasters began sabotaging the education of their students using excuses like it was too dangerous for them to learn about while the real reason was that they didn't want the muggle-borns learning more than they should. The hat could only sit and watch in silence as the school started to lose its glory.
It started small at first with the first headmaster making small changes but soon the ministry began butting in making "appropriate" changes, to the learning curriculum eventually turning the school into the complete opposite of what the founders wanted. It became a school for bullies, bigots, rapists, and murderers with each headmaster sweeping it under the rug with stupid excuses like they didn't know any better or harmless pranks that were meant to be fun. No Hogwarts was meant to be a school for those who wanted to learn about magic and who wanted to be part of a different part of the world. The founders encouraged their muggle-born students to visit their families during breaks so they would still be a part of them but most of all to show that magic was a wonderful thing and they were considered equals to the purebloods no matter what they thought.
The hat could only mutter to itself how the founders' legacy had been turned into the thing they were trying to prevent: a pureblooded school, no matter what the ministry and headmaster said. That's what it was. To make matters worse the current headmaster Albus too many names for him to remember or care about Dumbledore turned the school into a complete nightmare. How he allowed the student Tom Riddle to become the dark lord Voldemort to allowing a death eater to become the school potions teacher effectively hurting and sabotaging the country's future healers and Aurors. To make matters worse he had to listen to the headmaster give speeches to his phoenix, who he imprisoned and forced a magical bond to him that could not be broken, about how he was doing certain things for the greater good. How only he could change the wizarding world for the better and some sacrifices, and people, had to be made to ensure that the world he envisioned would come.
As the hat continued to think about the days when the founders were alive it suddenly felt a huge burst of magic filling the entire room, no, the entire castle. Hogwarts was back at its full power, all the wards were at their full power and the enchantments placed on the hat were gone. The hat suddenly realized what happened. "Magic is pissed off big time. I can feel her anger throughout the entire country." He said as Fawkes the phoenix squawked. "Yeah that's right bird, someone just rejected magic, and from the burst that was made this person must have had great potential for our world. I can't help but wonder who it was."
Just then Albus Dumbledore returned to his office followed by his loyal stooge James Potter. The hat just scowled to himself as he saw Potter, he couldn't help but remember how much of a pain in the ass he was when he was a student or how Dumbledore helped him get what he wanted which was his wife Lily. How before they were sort James had approached Dumbledore telling him how much he respected/worshipped him and Dumbledore noticed how James had wanted Lily. He told James he could help him get her if he promised to help him fight for the light in the future. The kid was so stupid and naive that he agreed not caring it could cost him his life by pledging his loyalty to the old fool. Dumbledore then used that stupid wand of his to charm the hat into placing both James and Lily into Gryffindor then Snape into Slytherin even though he was going to go there anyway. He couldn't help but wish that he had control back then but he didn't due to the past headmasters placing charms on him and tampering with the wards. All he could do on his own now was sleep or watch the horror show that occurs in the headmaster's office whenever he is there.
The hat just sat in silence as James started yelling about what had just happened. Dumbledore had taken James and Lily to see their youngest son Harry, who was thought to be a squib. The hat had known full well that Harry wasn't a squib, he had listened to the old fool tell Fawkes about how he gave Harry to his magic-hating relatives because of the Horcrux he had in the scar that was given to him the night Riddle had attacked Charles and Harry. How he was sure the Dursley would kill him due to his magic and how it was necessary. Both Fawkes and the hat hated his speeches and the justifications for his actions but they both knew the old fart would never listen to reason. He thinks his way is the only way and all other ways were dark. It made him mad how Dumbledore had purposely made sure the prophecy was heard by Snape so Riddle would get desperate and make his move if it was even a real one. To be honest it sounded fake but only Fate and Magic know the truth.
He listened closely as James ranted about how ungrateful Harry was and what he said to him. Dumbledore and the Potters went to see Harry at the Dursleys to reveal the truth to him about their world and why he was placed there then bring him home. Unfortunately, things took a dark turn when the Dursley revealed that they owned Harry, what happened was that when James was trying to get the Dursleys to take Harry they made him sign a document that they would be paid for taking him in. James had immediately signed it without even reading it since if he did he would know that he would be giving Harry up completely and had no chance of getting him back in the future should he have magic and they would keep getting paid. They had told him that they had made copies and he was welcome to fight it since he would probably have a huge chance of winning but it would then be known throughout his community that he was tricked by muggles. James and Dumbledore couldn't allow that so they decided to abandon Harry stating it was for the greater good.
The hat was extremely intrigued with what happened next as James complained about how Harry had no right to yell at them. There was more to the kid than meets the eye from what he heard since Harry had called both James and Dumbledore out. He stated that James had no right to be a parent since he look to an old fool who has no kids for parenting advice even suggesting that Dumbledore had arranged for the death of both James and Lily's parents, which was right on the nose since the hat heard Dumbledore telling Fawkes how their deaths were necessary for the greater good after he had heard the prophecy and started his planning. Harry had even suggested that the headmaster was trying to kill him by placing him with the Dursleys as he stated how he would always try to go to the cops or teachers for help only for them to call him a liar the next day while stating he noticed this strange look in their eyes as they told him that the Dursleys were good people. He even told them he noticed how his mother has the same look in her eyes and that he did that to her. James made things worse by telling Harry the headmaster did no such thing to her and he was a brat for suggesting that he was dark trying to suggest that the great Albus Dumbledore was trying to kill him.
It was then Lily suggested that Dumbledore could take a magical oath only for James to tell her to shut her mouth which she did. It made Harry realize that James had some kind of control over his mother and called him out on it. James stated that since she was a muggle-born he was her property since he was pureblooded. It made Harry extremely mad as he told James that he thought wizards were a bunch of arrogant assholes who think they could walk all over people with no magic and take what they want even using the headmaster's love for lemon drops as an example since the old fool had offered some to him even stating his love for muggle sweets or the fact that the old fool was the one to diagnose him as a squib instead of taking him to an actual healer. Of course, Dumbledore tried to guilt Harry for suggesting he would take his sweets not bothering to apologize for the mistake he made in labeling him a squib until Harry asked him to take a magical oath which he would not which proved his point. Harry then told them that wasn't better than people who didn't have magic and they weren't entitled to steal from them. James countered that they were the muggles' betters and had every right to take what they wanted from them, that the ministry has been taking things like crops, livestock, fabric, and other stuff from them for ages and they would continue to do so until the end of time. Harry stated that it was both the ministry's and Dumbledore's fault that Voldemort came into power because of their arrogance and thinking they no better, he even suggested that Dumbledore had arranged for the attack that night and even noticed how he said Voldemort was gone but not dead.
The whole argument had its boiling point when Harry called Dumbledore an evil old fool and James a dark idiot. James didn't take too kindly to Harry calling him dark so he punched him. He had struck Harry across the forehead with his Lord Potter ring hitting him in his lightning bolt scar he had hit Harry's forehead so hard that it damaged his ring while creating his slash against his lightning bolt scar. Harry then told James that he rejected him and his world which resulted in James disowning him then leaving dropping Lily off at Potter Manor giving her another obedience potion then coming here.
The hat couldn't help but be upset at the loss of Harry since he now knew he was the one who rejected magic. From everything he had heard Harry had attributes of all four houses, not to mention he was sharp and capable of putting certain things together quickly. Oh, this did not bode well for Magical Britain since there were three sources responsible: Dumbledore and the light, Voldemort and his death eaters, and Magical Britain's ministry. Hard times were about to hit Magical Britain and it wouldn't stop until the death of those responsible since they cost their world a powerful wizard and Magic wanted their deaths. Until they died Magical Britain was going to have a hard time with their magic and crops along with other stuff. As he thought about this he noticed two Gringotts owls dropping letters to both Dumbledore and James stating that due to a certain emergency, Gringotts has closed its doors for a few days until they sorted things out and would open up when they were done. Of course, this made them both mad and force them to take off while the hat just consulted quietly with the castle. "Time to get to work!" He shouted out to the castle as it started to make its move.
ONE WEEK LATER
It had already been a week since Harry had rejected magic and Magical Britain had no clue. The hate could only mutter to himself how the purebloods had made it where no one remembers that wizards and witches could reject magic if push to the point where they feel they are better off without it. It's stupid they chose to forget this since this was originally how squibs came to be. Originally Magic had started to make squibs as a form of punishment to the purebloods to teach them a lesson but they were so stupid they went to lengths of accusing the muggle-borns of stealing their magic from them. This annoyed Magic so much that she decided to place a curse on the country that would make magic hard to control and other stuff the country would need until the person responsible for someone rejecting their magic was dead. Though this didn't only affect their country those who were allies or shared the same beliefs with the one responsible for the rejection. It was an easy fix for the other countries as they either kill them or shipped them to the country responsible.
The hat knew for certain that other countries started cracking down and were doing their best to prevent this from happening again but Magical Britain wasn't so keen on it. This was the original reason why Hogwarts was founded but it didn't last long when the founders died as the purebloods decided it was better to potion the muggle-borns right away into accepting magic and never reject it with the future headmasters helping them eventually erase the fact that magic could be rejected from their history class. To be honest the hat had a strong feeling this would backfire on them in the future but no one would listen to him so he decided to keep his mouth shut and watch when it exploded in their faces. Though he had no idea the next person to reject magic would come from a pureblooded family, he couldn't help but find it ironic.
As Dumbledore ran around like a clueless old fool trying to figure out what was going on, Hogwarts began taking action starting with getting rid of two useless teachers. The first was Snape, an extremely easy task that involved ejecting the greasy bat out of the castle and into the lake. He had tried to get back in the learned the hard way he was getting back in since the castle was using its wards to keep him out ejecting him even further when he tried using his magic to get back in.
The other teacher to go was Cuthbert Binns, a useless ghost to taught the history of magic. The real truth was that he was a bigot that went around killing goblins and getting away with it since he was protected by certain laws until he killed a son belonging to the goblin king. The king used an ancient ritual that would allow the ghosts of powerful goblin warriors to attack his spirit and torture him for all eternity the moment he died. Binns didn't want that and went to his friend who was the headmaster at that time, he offered Binns an out where he would teach the history of the magic at Hogwarts making sure that the muggle-borns would learn too much and when he died he would remain at the school as a ghost teaching history of magic for all eternity. It was an out Binns was all eager to take. Too bad for him that when Hogwarts regained its full power it welcomed the goblin warrior ghosts that were lurking around Hogwarts waiting for a chance to get to Binns into the castle where they attacked him and dragged him into the afterlife where he would be tortured for his crimes.
Now there was one teacher the hat and Hogwarts were uncertain about and that was Sybill Trewlawney. Now they weren't sure if she was a legit seer so they came to a decision they would keep an eye on her when she was teaching if she showed one sign that she wasn't qualified to teach or that she wasn't a legit seer, she was gone.
Other changes the castle made were ridding the DADA classroom of its curse, something the old goat should have done at the beginning but didn't, and sending Ravenclaw's Diadem to Gringotts to have the Horcrux in it removed. The goblins had sent Dumbledore a bill for their services and would return the diadem to him when he paid them which he refused to pay them not knowing what they were talking about.
The week went by in a flash as the hat watched Dumbledore go back and forth throughout the office trying to figure out what was going on with Magical Britain and figure out why Snape was kicked out of the castle and how those goblin ghosts got into the castle. To make matters even more stressful for him the minister was ordering him to figure out why their magic was acting up along with their crops. However, Dumbledore had a bigger problem and that was to figure out why all of the creatures of Magical Britain began leaving the country. The hat really couldn't blame them as they really couldn't live in Magical Britain with Magic punishing the country.
However, things got certainly interesting as Gringotts reopen their doors with them stating they will no longer hire any wizards or witches unless they are willing to sign a contract that they would keep all Gringotts' information to themselves or risk losing their magic and be forced to work in their mines until they died. This upset the whole country but the goblins stated they were allowed to make any changes they deem necessary to Gringotts as their bank was considered another country to the magical world.
To make matters worst for Dumbledore, he got an earful and more from his old friend and teacher Nicolas Flamel who contacted him from his floo. Flamel had caught Hagrid trying to remove his stone from his vault a day after Gringotts reopened their doors and began yelling for security. Hagrid had told Flamel that Dumbledore had sent him to get his stone and assure him it would be safe but Flamel had no idea what he was talking about and began accusing Dumbledore of stealing from him. It didn't take long for the Goblin guards to show up and pin Hagrid down while killing the goblin who gave Hagrid the stone. Flamel had taken his stone from Hagrid and went back home telling them to release Hagrid later since he was only following orders. Dumbledore had tried making excuses but Flammel was having any of it. He was aware of what was going on in Magical Britain and told Albus that if he didn't know what was happening then he would never know. He then reminded the headmaster of the contract he signed when he became his student, that it was a magical contract and if he tried stealing from him or using his teachings for nefarious purposes then everything he learned would be stripped from him. The hat just silently chuckled as Dumbledore fell to the ground screaming in pain as everything he learned from Flamel was taken from him while Flamel told him he was done with him.
It was then Dumbledore began screaming that this was the work of Tom. Speaking of Riddle it was at that exact moment that Riddle arrived at the castle leaching off of Quirrell. The moment he approached the gates, Hogwarts used its wards to strip Riddle out of Quirrell killing him while driving Riddle off screaming in pain.
As Dumbledore began thinking of new plans that would help the greater good, the hat talked with the castle quietly about the school year. The school made it clear that it wasn't going to tolerate bullies, if one student begins to pick on another then the castle would kick them out. It wasn't going to go for Dumbledore's they were just playing a joke trick. As for the headmaster as much as the school and the hat want him gone sadly he is the only one qualified to run the school. Due to the low standards that Hogwarts has, Dumbledore is the only one qualified since he loves to hoard knowledge for himself. Hopefully, the teachers will follow the schedule plan the school intends to make for them, no doubt Dumbledore will do everything he can to get back control of the wards but no way that's going to happen. However, they both have to tolerate the old fool until someone capable of being the headmaster shows up at Hogwarts.
Though the hat can't help but wonder about Harry. There was the issue with the Horcrux in his forehead, from what it had heard from James there was a chance it was gone now. It figured due to the slash on his scar made by James' ring it could have created an opening for Magic when she took back her magic from Harry after he rejected it. Though then again she could have taken it out of him after he rejected her gift. The hat wasn't sure about it, the only thing he could do was hope it was gone.
Then there was another issue altogether when Harry rejected magic he could have created an opening for another force to offer its power to him. There were other forces besides magic out there, forces who don't have the chance to bestow their power on humans. Harry could have opened himself to one of them but there is a chance he didn't and if that was the case his body would begin making up for where his magic once was. If that did happen then his natural abilities like his strength, speed, and intelligence would double.
The hat knew for sure that Harry was probably going to live with the muggles and no doubt prove they were better than the wizarding community. He had hoped that after living with the Dursleys he wouldn't try to hurt the wizarding world since it was clear he didn't want to be anything like them but then again he was abandoned by his world twice. The whole thing sort of scared it since it had seen the minds of the muggle-borns over the years and saw how the muggles have improved their world. Rowena had always stated that their world would need to evolve with the muggle world if they were to survive since she knew change was something that was never going to stop. Though it was clear Magical Britain had no intention of doing that, it was going to come back to bite them big time that was for certain. He couldn't help but also wonder if Dumbledore chose the wrong child that night because if he did then it would eventually come out and no doubt Harry will put up a fight that would hurt everyone if they didn't back off. As Dumbledore continued to wonder what was going on the hat put aside any urges he had to tell him, no doubt if he did Dumbledore would try to fix it in his way and things would just end up worst. Besides, it was funnier this was. No, he would just wait until the school year started working with the castle to try to make the school decent again. He already had an idea where he would put Charles Potter without the headmaster being able to influence him: Slytherin.
THE END
To start with this idea was originally inspired by an idea where Harry didn't want to learn magic to the point that the Sorting Hat refuses to sort Harry due to him not wanting to learn. Then it evolved with magical oaths how they could cost a wizard or witch their magic if they lie. I figure Magic could take it if they lied why not have Magic take it back if its gift was rejected? This then sort of gave me a Boys-inspired idea, where a group of Britain's military recruit Harry into their group after he rejected magic. The whole thing was for them to spank the wizarding world when they started acting up. I had a bunch of ideas involving shipping a dead death eater to the Leaky Cauldron after torturing him with a car battery and then shoving a cattle prod down his throat killing him sort of their way of giving the cruciatus curse. The group would then make it clear that they were with Britain's government and would only work with Amelia Bones if they didn't want any more surprises. Of course, Fudge decides to take matters into his own hands and intercept all messages to Amelia which would result in him sending Aurors only loyal to him to get rid of them. Unfortunately, the tables would turn on them and they would end up being killed in a meat factory where they are shipped to Amelia as meat pies with a letter explaining everything attached. Of course, Fudge intercepted it disregarding the note after smelling the pies resulting in Umbridge, Dumbledore, Lucius Malfoy, and him eating them only to find out the truth later. There was also the idea of Sirius being shot with a tranquilizer dart in his Grim form and taken to a vet to be neutered. I had so many ideas for this but couldn't find the right words to put them in so I did it this way. I even thought of certain stuff that would sort of be equal to a magical problem. I mean with mind magic and potions I had an oc that has a metal plate in his head. I sort of gave him a backstory where he had a twin sister who was a witch with both of them having plates in their heads due to an accident when they were kids. Long story short I saw Sirius growing obsessed with her to the point where Dumbledore erases her family's memories of her except her brother remembers due to the plate. He would then enlist in the army hoping that he could find a clue to his sister through them eventually becoming Britain's best interrogator. He would eventually stumble upon his sister only to lose her again with him cashing in on everything he has done for his country and willing to quit if he doesn't get her back. It ends tragically when she is returned to him after being kissed by a dementor since her memory could not be erased. I even thought of a way to deal with dementors by using noise boxes used for ghost hunting. I figure due to their ghastly and ghostly nature the noise boxes would weaken them to the point where they become physical and can be killed by being set on fire. Then there was the way of recovering erased memories through hypnosis. Eventually, a loose idea of a Castlevania crossover popped up with Harry becoming a candidate for the next Dracula after rejecting magic which would grab Death's attention and decide to make him his next master. The idea of one of Dracula's brides popping up and helping him become the next Dracula came to me but I didn't know where to take it. Eventually, I settled for this because it was the only thing that came to me. Now here are the guidelines.
Harry must reject his magic resulting in him losing it.
Harry would either accept another force to replace his magic or have his own human attributes doubled: Strength, Speed, Intelligence, Etc.
Harry will do whatever he can to prove that his world, the mundane world is better than the wizarding world
Up to you if Harry wants to destroy the wizarding world or prove that he's better by trying to improve his own world by telling the wizarding world to get lost
Harry cannot want to go back to the wizarding world
Eventually, the wizarding world will find him and want him back and they need to learn the hard way why they should leave him alone
If you want to write this idea you're are more than welcome to. Anyway, thank you for reading. I hope you enjoyed it.
