Well new chapter up. This story takes place a few years before modern Pokemon time, though they use swords and shields instead of guns and rifles. It would be too easy to kill a Pokemon like that :D R&R.

Ash groaned as the morning bell rang signaling that it was time to get up. He peered over at the clock and groaned again, seeing that it was only 5:00 am. His head was light, and he had only gotten a few hours of sleep last night, because he had spent half the night crying. Ash had never wanted to become a soldier, but the only way his mother could live was if he did become one. He had never been away from home before, and the nostalgia had finally caught up with him. Summoning up all his energy, he lifted himself out of the surprisingly clean bed, and quickly dressed himself with black T-shirt and a blue jacket, one that his mother had made him three years ago. On the small wooden desk there was a note:

Dear New Recruit,

Congratulations! You have just been recruited into Kanto's Grand Army. We stride in the best performance of our troops and hope to wish you the best during your battles. If you may, please meet up with your comrades near the Pokemon Center at 5:30 sharp. I wish you luck and success.

Lance

President of Kanto

General of the Army

The raven-haired boy scoffed at the "Congratulations" part and placed the note back onto the desk. He looked out the glass window, realizing that he was in Viridian City. He had been to Viridian City every week with his mother, selling their prized daisies and vegetables. He sighed and smiled, remembering the happy faces of the customers when they bought at their stall. They had been a huge success and Ash and his mother had lived comfortably for several years, until his mother was stricken with a disease even doctors didn't even know about. The boy had no idea how to grow plants, so their money gradually decreased and they were forced to move into a shabby shack near the outskirts of Pallet. Ash shook his head, not wanting to remember the part where the government had come to collect their taxes only to find out that they were broke.

"Hey rookie! Get your butt down to the Main Lobby! Our division commander, Drake, and our general are waiting!" Someone said, knocking on Ash's door, breaking off Ash's daydream. Quite frantically, Ash put on his long-treasured gloves, with a blue sapphire shining proudly on top. The pair of gloves was given to Ash by his mother, though they were originally his father's. Unlocking his door, he stepped out onto the hallway, fast-walking to the meeting that was soon going to start. As he approached the lobby, a strange sensation began to overflow through Ash, a certain chill… Ash shuddered, and waved it off without a thought for his mind was focused on getting there on time.

Finally he arrived to a great splendor; a gathering of sixty teenagers just like Ash, all from the hometown of Pallet. These were boys and girls that the boy had known for many years during school, including Gary Oak, a tall, brown-haired, and quite bossy boy and Leaf Green, a talkative and quite attractive, brunette. She had always bullied Ash, though was always stopped by Gary, who always defended the cowardly boy in that type of situation. Ash walked over quickly to the waving Gary, who had a seat opened next to him. Drake gave Ash a quick nod, and Lance began:

"Brothers and Sisters of Kanto! Today we unite to fight for our homes, our Pokemon, and most importantly our family members!" Lance paused expecting cheer, though got nothing but a few polite claps.

"Ahem! As I was saying, today we are going to assign all of you recruits with a Pokemon, a creature where you would bind with for the rest of-"

Suddenly cheer erupted, filling the entire audience, who had sincere smiles on their faces.

Lance whispered something to Drake and the old man just nodded, pretending to actually hear him in the loud applause and whoops.

"SILENCE!" Lance screamed, causing many startled expressions on those of the audience. Lance cleared his throat and began again,

"The Pokemon you are going to bind with will be of your choice. But…" Lance trailed off with a grin on his face, "You will have to compete with other comrades to see who gets first pick."

Loud noises of boos erupted from the audience causing Lance to sweat drop.

"Please, please, the test is not hard," Lance said while holding up several stacks of paper.

"Now these tests will be graded harshly and whoever gets the highest grade gets first pick and gets to be the sergeant of their squad!"

There were confused faces on the audience, though some people cheered.

"Ahem, if you will listen, the group will be divided into ten squads of six, each will be spread out throughout outposts in Kanto. Since you guys are rookies, we can't have you marching in the front lines," Lance said, "Now please take your test. The results will be given an hour after everyone has finished."

Ash wiped the sweat on his forehead when he heard the phrase "take your test". He had never been an A+ student nor in fact a B student. He was not even a C student. Ash Ketchum, was the bottom of the class who has never got more than a D on his quizzes and tests.

"Don't worry Ashy-boy," Gary said patting Ash on the back, "I'll get that 1st place for yah!"

"No it would be me, sweetie," A feminine voice said from behind the two boys. Ash turned around and became face to face with no other than Leaf Green, an ace student who never lost a single point on her tests.

"Don't worry Ash, this time it won't go on your record!" Leaf laughed, along with a few other wannabe "Leaf" girls and walked away to Drake, who was passing out tests and papers.

"Ash, don't look so down, they don't mean anything," Gary tried to cheer Ash up, but to no avail.

"Come on man, let's get a test," Gary said motioning over to Drake.

"REMEMBER! NO PEEKING! THIS IS AN INDEPENDENT TEST! THOSE CAUGHT CHEATING WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY SENT TO THE BOTTOM OF THE LIST!" The PA blared.

Ash, while shamefully carrying his paper, walked over to an empty booth of the Pokemon Center Restaurant, which was closed that day.

Question 1:

What would be the best type to pit against a Dragon-Type;

Dragon

Fire

Grass

Water

Ash pondered for a moment; Well, since I know that same type combinations is never super-effective, I can cross off A. Hm… Fire… Well dragons breathe fire so I doubt they'll be super-effective too, so I can cross off B. Grass…Dragons can fly so grass will be useless so it has to be D!
Ash thought excitedly as he circled "D. Water".

Wait this is easy! Ash thought as he quickly finished the test turning it in and settled back into his chair near Gary, who had finished twenty minutes earlier.

"Good luck Ash," He acknowledged while prying through his books. Gary was always a nerd, and had always wanted to be a Professor like his Grandfather, but he also wanted to be a soldier, deciding that peace comes before knowledge. The raven-haired boy dozed off while waiting for the test results to be announced.

"Alright!" Lance shouted, waking up many people from their nap, "We will start by announcing the worst scores, then going up! Since there are sixty people and one hundred questions, it is unlikely that there would be ties but if there are, then you just have to go in to the Pokemon Room together."
"Hurry up and say the test scores," Someone from the audience yelled impatiently.

Lance thought in his mind how badly behaved these teenagers off, but kept it to himself.

"As it seem you guys clearly demand it, here are the test scores:

60. Gray Robinson 24/100

59. Ray Johnson 25/100

58. Henry Patterson 27/100

57. Ash Ketchum 29/100

There was laughter from the audience until it got to forty. Ash was static. He was so shocked that he was among the 50s! Yet he thought he did so well on the test!

"It's ok Ash," Gary said, though not sincerely since he now knew he was among the top forty.

"4. Gran Williams 95/100

3. Ryan Anderson 97/100

2. Gary Oak 99/100

-and Number one with an outstanding score of 100 is Leaf Green!" Lance finally ended, "Now will you please line up by your numbers, 1 first and 60 last, and head to the Pokemon Room to choose your Pokemon!"

"Grr… Screw that brunette bitc-" Gary muttered though interrupted by the voice that belonged to the person he was talking about.

"Now, now Gary-boy, don't be too harsh on me just because I beat you by one point. Which one did you miss, the one question that asked "What is a Pokemon?" Haha! Just to reiterate, the answer's C," Leaf laughed again, and then walked to the line, proudly declaring that she was Leaf Green and she was going to be the first to enter the lock-tight room.

Strange, Ash thought. I was sure the answer was A.

Ok the last line was a joke so cross it out of your memory before it's too late. Too late. Anyways how do you like the humor of the story, no humor, more humor, less dumb Ash, more dumb Ash? Please Review!
