Grauth and his wife Bree were released from the hospital a short while later. In district 2 you only stay in the hospital if our about to drop dead. Even then they prefer to send you home so it doesn't affect the other patients. They barely had a chance to think about names. It was all a blur. Such a blur Grauth seemed to forget about the crumpled paper he carelessly stuffed in his pocket. He was focused on the unnamed baby girl. Her dark brown eyes peering from within her pale cheeks. Piercing you like daggers. The small gathering of hair on her heads a dark brown. She was so different compared to his wife. She had dirty blonde hair and those crystal blue eyes you just melt into. But he loved them both the same.
The Ashby's lived in the wealthier part of district two. Both Grauth and his wife had close connections in the capitol. They were considered in the top ten richest people in district 2. So Grauth knew his daughter would not be signed up for any tessarae. He wouldn't let that even if they were scavenging for food. When they got to their house Bree stopped outside. "I can't believe this. A real family" she was almost in tears. Before she could get another word in Grauth caressed her face. Being careful not to squish the bundle of joy in her arms. "Closer than ever."
When they got in Bree immediately went upstairs to the new nursery. It was heaven. Yellow walls patterned with flowers and bees. The crib centred in the middle. Lace curtains surrounded it. Cutting it off from the outside world. Grauth helped his tired wife down to the wooden rocking chair. They sat for a while until she spoke. "We need a name." her voice was happy. She was choking back tears of joy.
"Something unique." Grauth replied. He was right. They didn't want any old name. They needed something to stand out from the crowd. His eyes scanned the room until he was hooked on the tiny clear vase in the corner. In the vase sit a four leafed clover. He and his wife had found it shortly after the found out she was pregnant.
"How about clove?"
Dahlia Prescott had been the Ashby's family friend for years so when Grauth approached her shortly after his wife had her baby. She was happy to let him in. Dahlia had lost her husband when he was killed in an avalanche up in the mountain. She never really recovered. However she always wanted children. Somehow she could never draw herself to the community home. The starving children would make her want to take them all home. Grauth didn't say much but asked her to go and meet the two children. Mace and Kale.
She fell in love immediately. The boys lock the girl's eyes. They were possibly the sweetest children she had ever laid eyes on. The files were immediately signed and she was whisking them to her house as soon as she could. She wasn't as wealthy as the Ashby's so it was hard to convince them to let her have mace and kale. It could have possibly been the written reference from Grauth.
She brought mace and kale home. She could barely afford to fend for herself but these kids were going to get a good life if it killed her.
