Six candles shining on my cake, a rare treat in my district. Looking back Mum must have worked for days to get enough for even one, it would have been almost impossible for her to have found and bought all of them. My wish for that year was for happiness... and a unicorn, but only one of them came true; at least for a little while.

When I was at school the next day, trying to work out simple addition sums for my nicest teacher, one of the older boys, Thane I think his name was, sat next to me and started helping. I was thrilled to have even a little bit of attention, to have a friend for once.

However, as I said, it didn't last. In the next month Thane was reaped and I was left alone again, trying to find just a single person to sit with or another happy moment scattered somewhere in my life. Even a smile from a complete stranger would have been magical. But that didn't happen and I was left alone again.

With somebody that had been my best friend gone, forever.

Okay, I think I'm going to do a few stories based on Thresh's life for now. This chapter wasn't the best but I thought I would post it anyway as I think it would have been an important part of this brave boy's life.
