The red blotches and bruises on Gabriella's neck that lead down under her t-shirt. The same red marks that appeared on Troy's neck and lead under her t-shirt. It wasn't a sign of causal sex with either of them these frequent but subtle bite marks. It was a sign that they had both found the right person. It showed they were taken. It showed they belonged to someone and warned others away. Especially with the secrecy of their relationship.
