When the final bell rang for lunch, I quickly gathered my things and left for the cafeteria.
When I reached the cafeteria, my eyes glided over the whole place looking for my sister, Luna. Since I was considered a loner, she was nice enough to let me sit with her and her posse. Well, she only really let me sit with them as long an I try not to talk to them, in fear of embarrassing her and her reputaiong she has "oh so tried hard to build'. So I didn't take it so harshly, because frankly, even if my life depended on it, I wouldn't talk to them either. Not a really big issue there.
Once I reached their table I acknowledged them with a slight nod of my head, nothing more.
Once I settled down, I laid my materials out in front of me. When I had all my things laid out in front of me including: questionnaire, recorder (yes I know very important), bibliography sheet on each person for them to fill out, I nodded my head in satisfaction.
Check, check, and check.
"Hey Luna, is Mikan seriously thinking of BSOTY now? I mean, there just came a seriously new hot guy to our school and all she can think about is a dumb award. How can guys even acknowledge her as a girl this way?" Chisa, Luna's main lackey, huffed. She then getting irritated as I ignored her and continued my work, as if she didn't even exist.
"Just leave her alone" Luna told Chisa. Maybe there's a reason I like Luna, because even though she may seem like a complete bitch, she never let's anyone, and I mean anyone, talk about our family in any way of disrespect. So I loved her in a way even though we weren't the closest bunch of sisters around.
Back to my work, I had now finished checking over things, so I looked around the cafeteria and I spotted Ruka and his gang. I gathered my things and walked over to them, putting up the best smile I could.
"Hey, I'm Mikan Sakura, and you must be Ruka Nogi. Well, I'm working for the Singing Court, and I needed to do the newspaper. Since we are interviewing new students and this years New Semester Events, I was wondering if you can answer a few questions?" I asked politely, putting up a good girl facade.
"No. I will not answer any of your questions, now have a nice day." he said brushing past me.
I felt myself boil in anger, but I held back knowing if I opened my big mouth, I would pretty much shove a pole up my ass and lose all chances of BSOTY.
So I just calmly―or what I hoped looked calm, if not looking like a raging bull―walked back over to Luna's table. Just when I got there I was invited by a sight and a conversation I did not need to see or hear for the matter. I'm lucky enough to only come in the ending.
Will you go out with me?
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, Ruka Nogi, the schools brand new heartthrob, had just asked my step-sister, Luna Koizumi, to be his girlfriend. Plus, watching her have a girly fit and present hyperactive squeals of "YESS!", she proceeded to hang off his arm, and the smug look off of Ruka's face, ugh, it made me want to kill myself.
If he turns into my newly brother-in-law, there will be blood spilled, greatly.
Corrosive Beauty
After the whole "proposal," the whole cafeteria went into chaos. Ruka, with his little posse following, had already disappeared not wanting to hear nor be apart of any of it, and leaving Luna clueless, wondering where he ran off to.
After I had debated for about 5 more minutes of agonizing earache, I decided to follow Ruka's example and ditch the cafeteria, seeing that the turmoil wasn't going to die down. I did have about 15 minutes until next class started so I might as well get all my stuff ready from my locker.
As I gathered my things and left I saw from the corner of my eye Luna blushing and gushing about Ruka to the posse, forgetting for a split moment her newly aquinted boyfriend had just left her alone. With a roll of my eyes and a mental gag I forced myself not to run out, but walk decently out the door not to attract prying eyes.
On the way to my locker I heard voices, and they seemed mad, one I was able to recognize as Ruka's voice.
Weaving my way through the hallways, I hid behind another wall and listened to the conversation going on behind me.
"Can we please leave Ruka? The girl you are looking for is not here, and what was with the fiasco in the cafeteria! How dare you do that to me, I though you loved me!" I heard an unfamiliar voice say.
"Oh please Hotaru, get a grip on your self, the girl I'm looking for is here and we will find her. I know it. So don't you dare tell me she isn't here and don't you dare imply the this plan is worthless; if you want to see something worthless take a look in the mirror, bitch!" I heard Ruka say, his voice starting in an annoyed tone quickly changing into a furious one, then slamming his hands on either side of her said caging her to the locker filled wall, and as if to add emphasis, the lockers rattled loudly in response.
The only though running through my head is, why in hell siblings would go out, and what was this "girl" they were looking for?
"Well, I actually agree with Ruka because I have things to do here." I heard another boy's voice say, cutting through my thoughts.
"Only reason you want to stay here Yuu, is because of your fucking musicals." I heard the girl named Hotaru snap back at him.
I heard Yuu mutter something but he was cut off by Ruka's roar.
"ENOUGH! BOTH OF YOU!" I heard Ruka yell. "Both of you guys just shut the fuck up already. Hotaru we are not leaving so this discussion ends here. Yuu, and I said to Hotaru, we are staying, so I hope you have enough brain to understand what the means. As of now we are seen as regular people. Yes, we've went to school about a hundred times before we can practically teach everyone here, we need to act like normal students, am I clear on that? Good, now let's go, class will start soon." Ruka said with great authority.
He started to stalk away furiously with Yuu following him like a lost puppy. I saw Hotaru stay behind, slowly sliding down the lockers and trying her best to breathe slowly. I wanted to go comfort her, but then she'd know I've been eavesdropping in on them so I decided against it and walked the other way to class instead.
Corrosive Beauty
The rest of the day went by quite quickly after that. Luna refused to leave Ruka's side once she found him again, and she kept consistently sending cryptic signals to everyone, practically saying, back off, he's mine.
Insert mental snort here please.
So here I am, just sitting at my desk and replaying the scene from the hallway over and over again. Like a song on repeat. So many questions were running though my head, but they all cut off when I saw a flickering of a light coming from a window across from mine. Natsume's window.
I looked over, and all I saw was a ragged curtain, but anything beyond that, just pure black darkness. Yet looking at that window made me reminisce my memories I had with that jerk.
We'd used to send each other this Morse Code we both made up with lights. One long and three short meant that "Please help! I'm dying of boredom!" Thinking back about it, I felt a smile creep up my face.
I remember the day he moved, and I didn't find out until late why. All I remembered was coming home and seeing Kimiko sitting sitting at the family table with a pen in hand and a black sheet of paper in front of her. She then saw me and said something I thought would never happen.
Natsume is moving, sweetheart. So I want you to write a good bye letter.
I remembered thinking is was just the normal "move-away-bye-I'll-probably-forget-you" kind of moving. Later on I found out what happened.
There was a fire at his house and his whole family had died along with it. I had felt so bad because when I had sent that letter, I had seemed so happy. That was when we were 9. Now here I am, 7 years later and still wondering how he was doing.
I remember 4 years after the fire, I was going on face book and trying to look for him and apologize, just wanting to know how he was, and where he was.
He was no where to be found, I looked everywhere. It was as if he had never existed.
So after a while I started to let go.
I was about to reminisce on my past some more when I saw the flickering light again. Okay now, I am seriously creeped out.
I got up from my chair and ran downstairs and into the backyard. I remembered that there was a huge hole right behind the flower bush that I could crawl through to Natsume's backyard, it was something we used to sneak over to each others house, so I crawled through.
I came back up on the other side covered with leaves and dirt. I looked around the yard and realized everything had changed. Nobody moved in the house after they left so why would it have stayed the same? It also made me realize how much time had really passed.
I started looking around the yard, slowing walking forward, and inspecting the things that lay there. I saw the old swing set Natsume and I always played with when we were younger, just sitting in the corner of the yard, marred with rust. The big lemon tree we always climbed, hanging over, dead and leafless, and the rose bush, withered with fallen petals surrounding it, as if littering a grave. I started to walk towards the house, sticks and leaves crackling under my feet, when suddenly, the door suddenly opened, and a dark figure stepped out.
"Who's there?" the figure, sounding like a 19 year old male, asked.
Overcome by fear, instead of answering, I did the next logical thing, I ran.
I was still a bit far away from the hole so I urged my feet to move faster once I heard the oncoming sound of feet from the stranger. Suddenly, the air was knocked out of my lungs as the strange man tackled me.
I was about to scream, but then, as if sensing my idea, the stranger immediately covered my mouth with his hand. So I resorted to trying to kick and lash out at the person with my arms and legs.
"Mikan!" I heard the stranger say, while I was trying to get out if their grip. The man started to say things that I couldn't, or rather say shouldn't have heard.
I was too terrified to understand what he said so all I heard was a babble if gibberish.
Once I did understand what he had said, I stopped what I was doing and looked at my attacker, my eyes filled with fear. The second my eyes adjusted so I could see his face clearly my face scrunched up with confusion. Having sensed this, he took his hand off my face and he asked me as if we just met yesterday.
"How's it going?"
I felt like throttling him, but his weight held me firmly to the ground, out of reach, and since I couldn't answer, I gave him the only reply I could muster.
"Natsume?"
