Chap. 7
Classes seemed unusually slow that morning. Firefly fidgeted every minute, checking her watch. She only realized that she should calm down when the boy who sat next to her in Literature said he smelled smoke.
The bell rang. Firefly sprang up and hurried out the door.
After she had dropped off her books, Firefly ran to the nearest elevator.
The Danger Room's hallway was much different from the rest of the school's hallways. It was an antiseptic white with odd blue lights along the ceiling. Firefly saw a door to the boys' and then the girls' locker rooms. Then a door labeled "Control" caught her eye. Next she saw the door to the actual room. The Danger Room.
Firefly walked over and pushed open the door.
Wolverine stood in the middle of the room with a man much taller than himself, sparring ferociously. The two men stopped and looked over as she entered.
"Smarts, you're early." Stated Wolverine while pointing at the taller man beside him. "Gambit." He growled.
Firefly nodded in Gambit's direction and he nodded back.
"Well, come 'ere, Smarts. You got some catchin' up to do before the others get here."
Firefly stepped forward, quietly wary of Gambit. He observed Firefly in a similar way, through red and black eyes.
"Okay, just a few simple punches and kicks after you stretch. The kids should be here in a few minutes." Growled Wolverine.
Firefly punched halfheartedly at first, but after five minutes she was getting into it. Just as she was about to really get in the zone, the rest of the class came through the door.
"'Lo." Said Gambit, nodding in the direction of the students.
"Let's get to work." Logan stated, nodding towards a large room above them all. Suddenly, the surroundings changed. Instead of the white training room, the class now appeared to be in a forest.
"Be ready. Remember what you just learned." Said Gambit, surprising Firefly. He had sneaked up behind her and pointed to a small cluster of trees ahead.
From the trees burst a robot. It was tall and menacing. The class stepped forward, fists held out ready.
"Powers are allowed." Said Logan stepping away and leaving the robot completely open. Several more like it appeared out of nowhere and made their way towards the class.
"Firefly, sit this one out. Jus' watch." Said Gambit, gently moving her away from where the young mutants were bombarding the robots with fire, water, lasers, and telekinetically moved objects.
Firefly was, to say the least, impressed.
"I can't do this!" she said to Logan. "I'll burn everyone in here to a crisp!"
Logan smirked.
"I didn't say you could use your mutation. Professor Xavier says you're to be trained here, with me." Firefly gave him an incredulous look. One that said, "Oh, yeah, you're the amazing 'I-don't-get-burned-at-all.'"
Logan raised an eyebrow at said look, and gave a two-word explanation, "Healing factor."
Firefly was confused for a moment. Then Logan went off to help Gambit with a stray robot, who's level had been set a bit to high for the group in the Danger Room.
Logan's adamantium-laced bone claws slid out from his forearms and Firefly's eyes went as wide as dinner plates.
She had never seen them before.
The class ended with sweaty, sore, and bruised children moving from the now plain white room.
Firefly had been allowed to spar with one robot. Logan and Gambit, who told her to step back whenever she became to excited, had closely supervised her.
"You're to come back here tonight." Said Logan, "Professor X wants you to have the group lessons, too. He just thinks it'd be easier for you to train without fear of broiling a class."
Firefly nodded, wiping sweat from her forehead. She had never fought before, and had found it quite fun and exhilarating.
"Tonight. I got it." Then she added darkly, "Are you sure you don't want to back out?"
Logan laughed and clapped her on the head, which he regretted immediately. Firefly apologized profusely, as Logan fanned his hand through the air.
A/N: I have no excuses for the lateness. Please accept my humble apology.
P.S: Sorry for my horrible attempt at Gambit.
Fun Fact: Jennifer Bellview is a seamstress. Upon finding out that her daughter had suddenly become pyro-kenetic, she began making fire-proof clothing for her. Hence the way her clothes aren't on fire.
