Chapter 7 – Looking at the stars
"Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, 'I will try again tomorrow.'" (Mary Anne Radmacher)
Chopper didn't look up as as the door was opened and shut again. Robin stepped in and quietly asked about Luffy's condition. After a night that had felt like an eternity, Chopper had managed to save their captain's life twice. It was a miracle itself, but what was even more surprising was the fact that Luffy seemed much more better right now. It confused the reindeer doctor to no end. Luffy's body seemed stronger each time he nearly died, but then, Chopper knew this was just the calm before the storm. Luffy was going to die, that Chopper knew. He just didn't want to acknowledge it.
The young doctor looked up and Robin's frown deepened. Chopper looked nearly as sick as Luffy, but that was understandable after such a stressful night. He shook with exhaustion, both psychically and physically, but he wouldn't take his eyes off Luffy. He was scared something might be happening if he looked away.
"He's okay for now. His heart rate is back to normal again. He's just asleep." Chopper muttered and Robin gently touched his head in a rare moment of affection. She knew how hard this had to be for him.
"I'm going to watch him. You should lay down a few hours." She said in her motherly tone and Chopper reluctantly agreed. She was right. He couldn't be of any help if he dropped to the ground in exhaustion all of sudden.
"Yeah." He replied and exited the infirmary with one last worried glance to Luffy. "Call me if anything changes."
"Of course."
With that, the archaeologist was left alone with her captain. She was torn between crying and not showing any emotion at all. You could say she was in-between Nami and Zoro. All of this was useless, crying and shouting at how unfair it was wouldn't help them anything. Robin knew of the cruelty of this world.
She leaned back and watched Luffy's pale face. How close they had come to losing him last night. She shuddered thinking about it. The black-haired woman could hardly describe her immense relief that he seemed stable now. She touched Luffy's hot forehead and combed back his black hair and smiled a bit.
"You will be getting better soon, won't you? It's always been like this. Luffy." She said gently but there was a bitter edge to her voice. She knew this was just wishful thinking.
Her thoughts wandered to the rest of the crew. Robin's expression became blank and she casted her eyes to the floor. "They are separating further without you. Me, too. I know it sounds wrong, but I don't want to speak with them as much as I used to, and everyone just isolates themselves, spending time on their own. We only sit together during the meals, but even then we don't talk to each other. It's so sad, this used to be a place where I loved to be, but now it's become so cold and lonely." Tears filled her eyes but she quickly rubbed them away, refusing to cry.
"We don't know how to go on, and just break down. We had to bear with hard times in our lives but still, this time we can't seem to recover even though we're together." She whispered and covered her mouth, nearly chocking on a sob. "You have to return to us, or else...",
Suddenly, Luffy hugged Robin tightly and she nearly flinched back in shock. "Luffy!"
"I already told Zoro that I'm trying and I really do fight. But it seems that whatever I say doesn't really reach you and whatever you tell me is not always right. It's confusing me, Robin. You guys are confusing me the way you suddenly act so strange around me. I don't understand why you would lie to me."
Robin was, probably for the first time in her life, entirely speechless. She reluctantly returned the embrace with shaking hands, not used to body contact like this but accepting it.
"It's always like this. I just sleep when you really need me and when I wake up I'm met by sad faces. I'm not dumb and I know things are going down the hill since I've suddenly become so sick. But what's really making me sick is how you guys lose every bit ambition." Luffy said, and his voice sounded strained but his hug was strong. It made Robin believe the old Luffy had returned, but this thought was quickly dismissed.
She wanted to reply, but the words stuck in her throat when wetness touched her cheek and she realized Luffy was crying. "I'm so sorry guys... I'm sorry I'm changing you into this. I'm sorry I'm failing you. I really wanted to be stronger for you, but I can't hold up again."
Robin grasped tighter onto her captain upon hearing that. Flashbacks of Sabaody Archipelago came to her mind and she forced herself not to cry, too. Of course Luffy was blaming himself again. "It's not your fault. We are failing you, not the other way around."
Luffy was silent.
"Luffy?"
He sighed deeply, releasing her and falling back into bed again. He rubbed his tears away and grumbled, "This sucks."
Robin had to chuckle at that. "Yes, it does."
"I would like to talk to-", Luffy began but was cut off as the ship suddenly reeled to the side, nearly knocking him out of bed if it weren't for Robin to catch him. "What's this?" he groaned, grabbing his aching head.
Robin quickly got up, eyes narrowing. "We're being attacked again."
"Again?" Luffy blinked tiredly.
"Yes, lately the marines seem to have a sudden interest in us. More than usually, that is. They are probably the reason why you got sick in the first place, but we still have to gather more information." Robin informed him. "Luffy, I'm sorry, but I have to take a look outside to help the others. Though, I'll keep an eye on you." Literally. A familiar blue eye appeared at the wall beside Luffy's bed.
Luffy didn't pay attention to it as he watched his archaeologist shutting the door. He sighed. Again, he couldn't talk to his friend like he wanted to. They were leaving him alone where he was forced to rest. He would love to get out and kick some marine ass, too, but he felt too tired to even lift a finger, let alone get up. His body hurt all over, his vision was blurry and his head was spinning... what could he do in this condition?
Even though knew that his crew didn't need his help and it was not that he was of any help right now, it felt wrong to listen to his friends defending the ship without him being part of the fight. He as the captain should help guarding Sunny, shouldn't he? Luffy released a pained groan, hating this whole mess with passion.
"Stupid sickness... stupid marines, stupid body! Get better soon, you hear me? Damn it." He muttered and pouted. The others would not need his help. Luffy nodded to himself, arms crossing over his chest. Yes, they were stronger than all of the stupid marines... he sighed again, and soon his eyes fell close and he was out like a light. The whole thing exhausted him to no end.
Robin's ocean blue eye blinked down at her captain, scanning him for any signs of possible pain. Much to her relief, she couldn't find anything wrong, but kept on watching. She knew of the dangers of leaving Luffy in such a state on his own and she wouldn't take any chances.
YXYXYXXYXYX
Robin didn't return. Luffy thought maybe he had been wrong to show Robin his weakest side, but he couldn't help it. Now he regretted it and wished he could have a few words with her again, but she didn't come. What Luffy couldn't know was that the archaeologist had been the one to keep watch the night before and needed some rest after the marine's attack. He just knew that Robin didn't return.
Sanji entered not too soon after that. Luffy was awake again, his hurting chest preventing him from getting any more sleep. He had a vague idea of what had happened last night, but he wanted answers to clear things up. Of course the cook stiffened at Luffy's blunt interrogation but told him everything he wanted to know. Luffy nodded without saying anything, and Sanji was disappointed he wasn't able to read the captain's face at all. It was impossible to tell what Luffy was thinking at this moment.
"Luffy, we're all incredibly glad you survived last night. It gave us the biggest scare of our lives, I swear." Sanji muttered and glared at Luffy as if it was his fault. "Nami-san's really worn out and she together with Usopp, Franky and Brook nearly fainted in relief upon hearing you're better. Even though we know it's only temporarily." Sanji added. Luffy didn't know what to reply to that, chewing on his lip in deep thought.
Sanji watched him with a mix of slight anger and exhaustion. Luffy looked up, and upon seeing how pale he was, Sanji's frown deepened. Luffy growled.
"I know, Sanji... I know that I'll die. I'm not that stupid and I realize how fucking weak my body is." Sanji was a bit taken aback by Luffy's unusual choice of words. The cook hadn't expected such a harsh answer. For the first time since Luffy fell ill Sanji could clearly hear the immense frustration swinging in Luffy's voice. He supposed it had to be twice as hard for Luffy as it was for them.
"Stop this crap! You won't die like that." Sanji lamely replied after a few minutes. Luffy chose to say nothing and the blond-haired man knew he wasn't a great help right now, but what could he say?
A sigh escaped Luffy's mouth and he wiped some sweat from his forehead. He hated how quick his body changed the temperature – from too hot to freezing in mere seconds. He also hated how his friends looked at him as if he were already dead. Heck, he could hear Nami crying every night. Not being able to help bore a deep hole into his heart. To Luffy, it seemed as if they had forgotten about all their great adventures, so hollow and blanched did they appear.
The next sentence he spoke broke from his mouth before he could stop it. Later on, Luffy would not be able to explain why he'd say something like this. He didn't know what came over him.
„I hope you can smile when you carry me to the grave." Luffy said bitterly, but somehow, he really meant it. That comment caused something in Sanji's mind to break. He couldn't think straight as unforgiving anger exploded inside him and the only thing on his mind was nononono!
He turned around with crazed eyes and slapped Luffy across the face. Hard. The hit sent Luffy sprawled to the ground like a rag doll where he lay, unmoving. Whether it had been from the shock that Sanji -one of his own nakama- had hit him like this (with his hand!) or the pain in his head just exploded, Luffy couldn't decide. Probably both of it. His world was black for a moment. He coughed, his sight returning to him and he slowly turned his head to the other man, staring. The cook was huffing as if the motion just now had been a great exertion.
In a way, it was. The whole week had been a great exertion, with too many fights to count (with both the crew and foreign ships) and hardly any sleep at all. Constant worry. Never ending fear and weakness that shone from deep within all of them. It tore them apart, one after another; but the worst thing was that Sanji'd just realized the captain of this ship was giving up on himself. No, on all of them. He'd admitted defeat without thinking about how his friends, his family dammit!, felt about that. How... how could he? How-
„How dare you," he muttered and Luffy had to strain his ears to catch it. „How DARE you, Luffy!" Sanji repeated, and Luffy's eyes bore into him. He didn't answer.
He knew what he just said was terrible, but he couldn't help it. The others were all so gloomy and silent, it really scared Luffy. If they had no hope for him, how was he supposed to fight through all this pain and misery? His friends were here, but they weren't by his side, where he needed them. Couldn't they see how much they hurt him? The problem was that Luffy just didn't have the strength to tell them this. They were too blind to realize, and he was too broken to talk. How could things work out if the situation continued like this?
„You were so strong... ." Sanji said and Luffy noticed how the cook's hands shook.
Luffy's eyes widened and he blanched visibly. What...? That comment had struck a nerve deep within Luffy, and he suddenly saw the other side of the situation. He was causing this. Maybe it wasn't their fault because when the crew didn't support their captain, then there had to be something wrong with him. If the captain was weak, then it would immediately reflect on the rest of the crew. In Luffy's head it was beginning to ring loudly and Sanji's wary voice faded. Blood was rushing in his ears and the strawhat boy felt a wave of nausea swap over him. He dry heaved, head bowing as he held his clenching stomach.
You were so strong.
Yes, Luffy thought, I used to be strong. But only with my nakama. I'm nothing alone. A captain without his crew is nothing.
Somehow, everything would tumble down like this. All of this... it was so wrong! He shouldn't be having this conversation with Sanji! He shouldn't be kneeling gasping and heaving on the floor! He shouldn't be broken like this! This was not how it was supposed to continue after two years of misery and stepping over the limit and missing each other! They should be beating the crap out of Doflamingo or Blackbeard or some other crap guy, and sail on the seas together, in happiness. They had been separated for this long, only for Luffy to find that they were rapidly drifting apart now. Because of him. Because he wasn't strong enough.
Was this really the end? What about all the sacrifices they'd made? What about their dreams? Luffy couldn't find the answer. What were all those nights for? Those nights of sadness and biting his lip until it hurt so that he could forget about Ace for a moment to force himself going … those minutes and hours he spent thinking about winning and losing and gaining and his friends he had to keep safe because from now on, losing meant death.
It made Luffy want to scream and cry and claw at Sanji and himself and the others for being such goddamned fools, but he just didn't have the power to do so. Everything he had fought for crumbled into a heap of black failure. Everything he wanted to achieve and gain... it dried out before his eyes like old leaves. They left an old, dying tree behind.
And all Luffy could do was choke on a sob and curl on himself, the emotions and suffering overwhelming him. And that's when he felt strong arms pull him into a trembling hug. He didn't need to look up to know it was Sanji. The familiar smell of cigarettes mixed with something he couldn't put a finger on lingered in the air. He knew this was Sanji's smell.
"Sanji...," Luffy wanted to talk to Sanji, he wanted to solve this catastrophic circumstances finally and forever, having the unstoppable desire to just speak to all of his crew members now. He wanted to get rid of all the immense sadness he knew everybody was feeling, because Luffy just couldn't stand it anymore. But the moment he opened his mouth there was a thick knot in his throat and he panted loudly. His chest hurt.
Sanji on the other hand didn't even register this. He shook like a leaf in the wind, pale chin resting on his captain's head as he held him like a little child, rocking back and forth. It was a disturbing sight. The cook was disgusted with himself at this very moment. He hated himself more than he could ever hate anyone else, because who would hurt his captain like this? It was cowardly and had stung something deep inside Luffy, Sanji had realized the moment Luffy's hollow eyes bore into his soul.
„I hit him... I hit him even though Chopper said he could die any minute... even though his heart stopped twice last night... I must be insane...what.. what kind of nakama am I?" Sanji stuttered and it sounded close to panic as he took in what had just happened. „Luffy... I'm sorry."
But Luffy couldn't hear him. His ears were too numb to take in any kind of noise, and his eyelids were too heavy to hold them open any longer. Luffy felt like spinning in a circle, faster and faster until everything was a blur and the immense heat turned into coldness that grasped at his very being, and he opened his mouth to a silent scream that seemed to plead,
'Just stop.' And Luffy was surrounded by nothingness. Sanji gasped, eyes widening. "Luffy?" He stared at his captain for a couple of seconds to make sure he was only unconscious before he released a frustrated growl.
"I'm sorry, damn it..., " Sanji cursed and drove a shaky hand through his unusually messy hair. "What the fuck is wrong with me?" He needed a smoke, and he wanted it now. Darn, this was all too fucking much for him! He couldn't bear with this fucked up situation any longer. Luffy was so frail and Sanji was shocked he had lost so much weight.
'Shit,' he thought with widened eyes, 'when has he last eaten?' He could feel Luffy's rip case through the t-shirt as he lifted him up.
Sanji gently lay Luffy back into bed, watching his sleeping face. Thank god he didn't look like he was in pain. Much to the chief's dislike, though, there was already the beginning of a bruise forming on Luffy's left cheek.
"Fuck." he cursed under his breath. Had he hit him that hard? He deserved to get beaten to a bloody pulp for what he did to his captain.
„Am I already turning crazy?! Heh, Zoro's gonna slice me up for doing that to Luffy. " Maybe he deserved that. Hell, for all Sanji knew the hit could have triggered another heart attack or even worse!
Sanji inhaled deeply and took a seat beside Luffy's bed. The way Luffy had fallen asleep that quickly only showed him how weak he still was. Or maybe how exhausting it was for Luffy's body to take a hit to the face after nearly dying twice last night. It left a huge hole in his soul and he briefly wondered about what might come the next day. If the night would continue like yesterday-
Sanji quickly tossed the thought aside. He didn't want to even think about it.
YXYXYXYX
When Luffy awoke he was caught up in a world of depression. He was aware of his condition and he also had a sudden deja vú of being left by another nakama. Hadn't Sanji been here before? Luffy wanted to talk to him for what happened earlier, he wanted to talk about his fears and feelings, longed to hear about their thoughts and what they have to make through. That was the only way of dealing with the situation, but they just wouldn't listen to him and leave him too soon to understand. Luffy didn't know what drove Robin, Sanji and Usopp away from him earlier, but were they already that far apart? Didn't they care enough anymore? Or maybe he was just seeing things because of his huge headache? Luffy wasn't sure. He couldn't be sure of anything, he couldn't even believe in promises Zoro made anymore. Luffy was really disappointed.
Never never would he have thought Zoro, the most loyal of them all, would not keep a promise and lie to his face like that. How could he? Luffy was frustrated. Zoro knew he valued promises a lot, so why did he lie? Why did he have to stab him in the back like that? Did Zoro think so little of him? There were no answers, because Zoro wasn't there with him.
Luffy would never forget the shocked face Zoro made when he appeared in the doorway of the kitchen. It was an expression he'd never seen on the first mate's face before. It was a look that didn't suit Zoro.
Luffy turned around, face blank as he pushed the thoughts about Zoro's betrayal - because that's what it felt like to Luffy – away.
Luffy felt as if he wasn't living anymore. He was fading away. Slowly, painfully. Yes, it was painful. He didn't have a choice in this. His own weakness forced him to stop living. Just like that. Luffy had always thought he'd die in a fight, but never did it cross his mind to become so ill it was live-threatening. What would his brothers say if they knew of this? He'd always wanted to achieve something. Dying on that long way to his dream was okay, but dying like this was just shameful. This way, he wouldn't live long enough to make a change and that thought alone was unbearable.
He ached to be free. Free of this damn blanket that was too hot and too heavy. Luffy didn't want to see the same boring ceiling above him day by day; he hated the plain walls to his left and right and even if he tried really hard, he could hardly see anything through that small window. Luffy despised it. This room, this small, tight, boring room. He wanted to go outside and feel the fresh, cool air. It was way too hot in there.
Looking around, he saw Brook sitting beside his bed for the first time. The funny thing was that Luffy couldn't even tell whether the skeleton was awake or not.
"Brook?" Luffy croaked and he blinked at how raspy and quiet his own voice was. Plus, it echoed really strangely in his head.
The skeleton startled and looked in surprise, obviously not prepared of Luffy's sudden wake. "Luffy-san." he replied equally quiet. "How... how do you feel?"
Luffy considered this for a moment before he decided, with a nod of his own, "Okay, I guess. I've been worse."
Brook didn't seem satisfied with that answer but he didn't press the matter any further. Silence hung between them, and Luffy cocked his head to the side. His musician lacked the usual cheerfulness, and it was bothering the strawhat boy.
For Brook, this was hard. After spending fifty lonely years in that fog he'd finally found happiness again, but it was brutally shattered a few days ago. He didn't want it to end the same way his old captain had died. It just couldn't. Luffy-san couldn't leave him alone like this... Brook wouldn't bear it. There was no way he'd be able to fulfill his promise to Laboom if Luffy... if he...
"Brook?" A weak voice broke through his clouded mind and Brook slowly turned his head to his captain. It creeped Luffy out. Since when did the skeleton not joke or laugh? It was totally out of character for him! Right now, Luffy's mind hadn't caught up with the situation yet and it didn't quite understand Brook was depressed because of his condition. Thinking was just so hard. One moment, he woke up and knew how sick he was and how much it pained his crew. The next, Luffy had forgotten about it and wondered what was going on and why the heck he was so tired. "Brook?" he repeated.
"Yes, Luffy-san?" Came a short reply and Luffy frowned tiredly. Something had to be done about this. A huge headache came up and Luffy's hand reached up to touch his forehead. 'That's right', he thought, 'I'm sick.' Of course his friends would be down. Luffy doubted he'd be able to deal with such a situation any better. But still... it was hard for Luffy to watch and he bit his lip.
"Brook. Don't let one person lead your whole life, ok?" Luffy said and smiled encouragingly at his crew mate. "I had the experience with Ace... he was kinda my role model. And I nearly broke because of his death if it hadn't been for you guys."
Even though Luffy didn't have a clue about special thins like weather or history, he knew exactly what to say to hit the nail dead on. He was always blunt and never hid his thoughts. Maybe it was just out of instinct, but Luffy could read people's feelings like an open book, especially those of his friends. There was no hidden emotion, no lie behind a smile he didn't see.
Unintentionally, this had been a clear shot to Brook's heart (metaphorically speaking). Brook bowed his head. Somehow, this statement made him angry and sad at the same time but he couldn't tell why. It was just that this whole situation was slowly tearing him apart.
Brook had experienced pain of the worst kind and had suffered enough for ten lives. This would be like a death blow to his soul. Hearing Luffy say he shouldn't depend on him so much... Luffy practically telling him to throw their friendship away... it really hurt Brook more than he wanted to let on. It felt like Luffy'd said, 'Leave me behind and move on' as if he hadn't existed! It was impossible – for Brook and for the rest of the crew.
Despite his anger growing, Brook swallowed it and agreed politely but without any sort of emotion. Luffy didn't seem to realize this as his eyes slowly closed again. Brook's thoughts wandered back to Yoki and his former crew, and his eye holes filled with water when he remembered the lonely ship sailing away with his dying captain. It had been the saddest day in his long life. Brook gulped down a sob as not to disturb Luffy and wiped his eye holes. Just when the musician heaved a tired sigh and wanted to settle back, he suddenly saw movement from his right site. He quickly turned to his captain's bed, only to see Luffy wasn't there anymore.
"I'm gonna get some fresh air." Luffy quietly informed him before the door fell shut with a short 'click'. Brook sat there and stared at the door in bewilderment. It took him a second to react and then he jumped up as if a snake had bitten him.
"L-Luffy-san! Come back!" He shouted and ripped the door open, looking around frantically. He thought his captain had fallen asleep again, how had he managed to sneak out so fast?! "Luffy-san!"
All of sudden, Brook spotted a slim figure at the railing and a pang of relief ran through him. It was over-washed by cold fear as he realized the danger Luffy was in and he wasted no time to react. "Luffy-san, please stay away from the railing!" He called out.
It was in vain. Brook's plea didn't reach Luffy as he stared up into the sky, his hands tightly gripping the railing for balance. Finally he was out of that stupid muggy room. Above him, thousands of lights glowed visibly and he smiled.
Looking at the stars made him feel so small and unimportant. Luffy couldn't help but wonder if he would still be able to see them when he was dead. He hoped so. The stars were the only thing about nature that really interested him, and he even managed to remember some of the complicated stuff Robin told him about. Okay, just a little bit, but for Luffy it was a lot.
Brook raced down the stairs.
„I love stars." Luffy said to himself as if there was no one else on deck. At this moment, his mind was at peace. Luffy didn't know he had a high fever and was delirious again. He didn't think about his friends, couldn't hear the desperation in Brook's voice as he called out to him. He didn't think about his dream, nor about Shanks or his dear brothers.
Right now, there was only himself and the stars. There was also the wide, unreachable night sky, but he didn't pay attention to it. He only looked at the stars, because they were millions of little suns that were too far away for Luffy to see their rays or feel the heat of them. Luffy wondered if each of those suns had their own little planets rotating around them, just like their sun had eight little planets around it. Just like he had his eight nakama surrounding him.
Luffy shook his head. Thinking of his friends only made him sad. He couldn't quite remember why, because why on earth would he ever feel miserable when thinking about his crew? It didn't make sense, but then, a lot of things hadn't made sense lately. Why should he worry? The stars were still there and shone, only for him. That thought brought a smile to his face, and it felt good to smile. He hadn't smiled in like forever!
Brook had nearly reached him and decided to slow down; he knew how fragile Luffy's mind was and didn't want to scare him. "Luffy-san.. would you please get away from there?" Brook swallowed as he saw what his captain did next. The musician's hands shook. Suddenly his legs felt weary and didn't move on their own. Brook gasped.
Luffy decided to sit on the railing, because standing was too exhausting and his legs felt tired. His eyes never left the sky. It was awesome. He'd love to dig deeper into that endless sky and discover more and more lights as he left the earth and this sun behind. Flying would be amazing... if only he had wings and could fly away and leave this dark place... up into the night and further and further-
Luffy gasped and a yelp of glee escaped him. He felt the wind rushing past his ears and the stars had vanished and he couldn't believe it, but he was flying! Luffy spread his arms out wide as if to embrace the air but then there was only darkness as he pummeled into the cold waters below.
Luffy briefly registered the icy coldness that bit into his skin like thousand of needles as he sunk deeper, and he couldn't help but wonder,
Had he reached the place behind the stars? Was this what the endless dark sky looked like?
Brook grabbed the railing so hard his knuckles cracked. "LUFFY!" He was frozen in shock. He'd just watched his captain fall without doing anything.
"Oh my god... Somebody... HELP!"

Holy crap, even I have to admit that was a low blow. I hate cliffhangers with passion, that's why I'm already typing up the next chapter like a madman. I won't keep you waiting too long because it'd suck after such an ending. As you can see, the crew's completely out of character here -laughs- sorry for that but I wanted to describe them as completely different persons because I can't imagine what it'd be like if Luffy really were in such a condition -shudders-.
Anyways, thanks so much for all those reviews! :D :D
