Several imperial battleships are docked. Security finishes up the last scans and carry on with rifles still present and eyes wandering the hallways. Forte and Baron on the other hand were in a small room watching from the many consoles. "It's been three days, any word from Mori?" Baron yawns. "Nothing. They've been with those.. Things."
"Whatever happened to our emblem frames?"
"I might sound crazy, but I think they are the emblem frames."
Baron tugs on his cap, "She better hurry then. The numbers keep rising and I get the itches."
"I know how you feel. But she's the new captain. We all take orders from her. For now, let's just hope nothing enters Rhome."
"Roger."
Infirmary-
The wait becomes unbearable. Having to watch everyone out there get burned or fatally wounded. Not being able to do anything about it.. I have no words for it. Vanilla heals them as fast as she can but more take their place. The men here spread rumors and chatter to pass the time. I'm not fond of their talk, which range from: Takuto is not really dead, the angels gave up on us, or the weirdest one, a monster is in the infirmary, with no heart or emotion. The last one just feels out of place.
I guess they broke, we all have. "Mori, help me put pressure on this man's chest."
Well, back to helping out, "I never run out of work in the infirmary."
"It could be worse," she said.
I frown, "Hey, Vanilla. It's been a while and I haven't heard a word from you about.. You know who. Are you alright?"
She stops treating the man, "Takuto did what he had to, to save me and everyone else. I understand."
"You were inseparable for so long. Even when the Moon angel troupe disbanded for some time. If this happened to-" I sigh, "Nevermind. I'm a bit a jealous."
"If this happened to who, Mori?"
"Nothing much, just a close friend. She's been gone for a while and I can't believe it. I'm an angel now, though. I should just get over it-" a sharp hand slapped my cheek. Vanilla crossed the back of her hand and drew it back. "What-"
"We're angels, do you know why, Mori?"
"Because we're soldiers, the best of the best."
"No, because of the bonds we form with the people around us," she put her hand over my heart."
"But, Vanilla. You're a medic. Doesn't it hurt to see everyone around you go?"
"Yes," she continued healing silent men and women about the room, "Everything happens for a reason. Though some people I knew died. If I forgot them I wouldn't be here today. I wouldn't have met Takuto."
I rub my cheek and sit down quietly. "Everything happens.. For a reason?"
"I had a foster-mother that taught me how to heal with my nanomachines. She was a very kind person a gentle mother. She passed away."
"I'm sorry to hear that."
"I swore I wouldn't let anyone die like that and clinged, but a friend told me to let go. But never forget her. Ever since I've saved and lost a lot of friends, but they weren't for not in vain."
"Why?"
"Because they're here" she put her hand over her heart and felt, "I'm still here, and they would want to me keep helping people."
"I see..," pretty big words from someone so quiet.
"Mori, why are you here?"
I shrug, "I'm not sure. Lisa brought me into the army when there was nowhere else to go to. Said I should show them I'm not a monster."
"You collaborated with Eonia?"
"Y-yeah.." I was thinking of lying, saying that was it, but I couldn't. "Actually, not just that. It's hard to explain, but I'm his little sister."
She nods and finishes her work. I was disappointed, this wasn't like the dramas I saw on TV. "You're not surprised?"
"Somehow, my heart told me when I first saw you, it was so. But your actions showed otherwise. She would be proud of you."
"Yeah, I suppose huh."
"You let Eonia free as well. He is speaking with the our emblem frames alongside Noah?"
"I know it seems strange, but I don't think he's a monster. Deep down I think he just didn't know what was right. People his whole life tricked him into thinking a certain way. If he was with us, he would have been just as good as Takuto or Lester."
She nods, "Takuto would agree.. It reminds me of Wein."
"Who?"
She laughs, the first time in a while, "A friend."
John walks inside, he seems rather abrupt and hasty. Nano-Nano is holding on to him, "You can't go in there right now, nya."
"Be quiet and I'll make it quick."
"You must be the new medic," Vanilla bows.
"Did you keep your promise?"
She nods, "I have everything, it's been a while since I met you. We must hurry. Mori?"
"I'll be going then."
"Thank you."
I leave. Hmm, odd. Noah runs into me and she waves for me to follow. Well, more work then. We're inside the interrogation room with Ranpha, Anise, and Manny. Along with a lot of our emblem frames. Boy was it crowded. The small confinement had to be renovated a few feet to get them all inside.
"What did you learn?"
"They say they're from EDEN. And they want to speak with Shatoyarn... Same as usual," she sighs.
"Putting them anywhere near the priestess is dangerous. I won't allow it."
I eye the women meditating, "We don't have forever to talk. How's Sigurd holding up?"
"That slime? He's taking his sweet time reconning the Twilight Moon."
"Then I'll bring Shatoyarn with me, armed."
"It's risky," Ranpha adds, "Let me join. Along with my friends."
"Our friends. But sure, the more the merrier."
We enter the room with Shatoyarn. Their eyes open all at once and smile as if they were at a highschool reunion. One of them I recognized as Alexande- Alexis speaks, "Priestess. It's good to finally see you."
"Yes, I feel the same too. I was hoping to talk to you."
"There is much to discuss, but we must make haste about it. Time is of the essence."
"Hey! Don't talk to Shatoyarn like that!" Ranpha was about to raise her fist but Shatoyarn politely asked her to calm herself, "You must mean the Twilight Moon. A moon I have never heard of. I've read so many logs from the White Moon and I have never heard of such a design. Neither has Noah, though her logs were more recent, they have been.. Destroyed."
"It can't be helped. The moon we speak of is much older, logged in a language older than the recent Edenian you are familiar with."
"What Edenian is that?" I step forward.
"Mythic. Dialect spoken when EDEN was young and primitive. And worshiped Gods."
"Those things that've been killing our men on the battlefield?" Anise hissed.
"Guys, you're not helping," I sweat. They simmer down.
"Ah, Mythic Edenian. That language ceased to be spoken before my first generation were born..You must be old."
"Thousands. In fact, we must warn you about the Twilight Moon before it's too late."
"What of them?" Shatoyarn became much sterner and serious.
She cleared her throat and explained, "We are the embodiment of weapons forged by EDEN. We started out as intelligent AIs, relics beneath the Earth plentiful in the dozen-"
"Edenian silicon."
"Precisely. We are smart, sentient beings that think and speak on our own. The old Edenians believed us to be Gods and turned us into weapons to protect them from the dangers of the outside world and soon space. My companions and I were made to soar in the air, protecting them from the dangers that may invade above."
"Emblem frames. How were you able to be built into these things?"
"We have many shapes and forms, Mori. Should someone have the power and means to carry through. And the Edenians did so, carving us into battleships, machines, to conquer and defeat other races."
"Which explains why your relics are scattered throughout the galaxy," I snapped my fingers.
"You are a bright human, Mori. There is more to this story though, we cannot fight alone. We require the symbiosis of other beings. A bond. It gives us strength to keep fighting."
"Which is what the angels stand for."
"Brilliant, who told you that?"
"A friend," I joked.
"A wise friend indeed. The Edenians created superweapons harnessing the thoughts of many humans and embodied it into two of our brethren. You know them as the Black and White moon."
Shatoyarn shook her head in disbelief, "So Noah.."
"Is of our kind. I believe the White Moon though has lost touch with her caretaker."
"What happened to her? Is she alright?" Shatoyarn bombarded questions.
"It's a tragic story..But let me begin before the creation of the two moons. There was a prototype moon, the ultimate weapon..."
EDEN- Unknown Date
We were only children then, aboard a shuttle much like what you refer to as the Sky Palace. We were surrounded by guards and ever busy scientists. We were fed and housed by many. I was the eldest and my brothers and sisters came later, gradually.
It was a normal day, but that would soon change. Our servants had ceased to feed and care for us. The men were speaking quietly, each day. Then a women in a blue gown came to me, with a boy, an AI much like me. Except he was much different, he was younger, a child of some sort.
"Hello," she waved to me.
"Hello, Mother Gracia."
"This is Jonah," she introduced, "I hope you will get along in the new program."
"Of course."
The program she spoke of, was preparation for war. They simulated flight and taught us to use our body motions to destroy threats. In return they tended to us. Each day we grew stronger and confident. Our trainers were fine, and our tasks were of no challenge. We took pride in being of use to the humans, protecting them from danger.
They were preparing us to defend humanity. In training, I never saw him. He was taken aside to separately speak with Gracia. At the end of each training session he came back with smiles or stories of the places Gracia took him. Flower fields, villages, while we fought. He came back fighting twice as brave than the eldest of us, destroying all targets in seconds. We questioned our role. Questioned Jonah's strength. How could they let someone so young outdo us? Show so much favoritism?
We avoided or picked on him, and always he fled to Gracia. Since then he showed aggression in training. Gracia always smiled and hugged him. Like a mother and her son. This made me jealous, because as the eldest I was favored by her.
This continued for several days up until the last month of the year. Then came the war against the Val-faask. It was the initial years, and Jonah showed his worth, destroying countless fleets, winning decisive victory after another. And every-time Gracia egged him on with comforting compliments and praise.
We were afraid of Jonah, his wings and strength were unmatched. If he turned on us.. I told Gracia, but she shook her head saying she wouldn't let him go so far as to do such a thing.
Then the Val-faask countered, they too had the power of technology on their side. The automated fleets. Though we had strength their numbers overwhelmed us.
We had to adapt, and the humans offered to put us in. Machines. Something that could be produced in numbers We all agreed, there was no other choice, but Jonah refused. "What will happen to our emotions? We'd lose all of it if we do this!"
"We have no other choice, Jonah. We have to protect the humans."
"We will! I'll kill them all on my own if I have to!" he fled from the room and went after a Val-faask fleet. Destroying every ship. No survivors were spared. Not even the civilian ships. Flames eerily traveled through space and the bodies.. I still...dream of them. We realized this was a diplomatic envoy. Peace was no longer an option.
Jonah was too dangerous mentally. But the scientist believed suppressing his emotions would keep the system stable. However, Gracia resisted, "You'll be able to win the war. But I won't be able to live with what you will do. He needs me, I know deep down he's just a kid."
"He's an AI, he's not a real human. Dangerous, unstable."
"He is to me. The time we spent together, he was never unstable. I don't think he understands what he did. I can teach him."
"I'm afraid, we can't let you that." Soldiers came with pikes.
"Isn't that what I meant to do?" They stabbed her, and she fell back. Jonah ran up to her, clinging onto her tightly as possible, "Gracia!"
"It's okay, mom's here," she lay on the floor, coughing blood. "Urgh..urgh..," he rattled his wrists still clutching on to her. "Bring him here and let's get this done with."
What he did haunts my memory. He shook his head, and then a wave of robotic arms jumped from the ground and mutilated everyone around him. He then ran from the room as fast as he could. But the humans were ready, they brought EMP guns and stunned him.
They then took him away and executed their plan. In three years, the Twilight Moon was built, the weapon that was supposed to save humanity. And we there to witness it, from the windows of the sky palace.
"It's finally ready," the scientist spoke, " After the defeats we've suffered, it is now time to fight back." He signaled for the first shot to fire. And it did, but not into the enemy. No, a ray of death hit the ground and caused a section of the city to collapse from the clouds, thousands of feet below.
The scientists stood petrified by horror. "The test is failure, the AI has taken over the system!"
"Get out of there!"
"We're trying, he's taking over the escape pod- Oh god, the gas has leak-"
We heard muffled screams and the scientists squeezed his radio into a ball. The only choice was to lock him away somewhere distant, that was in a wormhole, you now call Central Globe. Models were made since then, the white and black moon. Gracia went to the white moon and Noah the black moon. And the us, the Emblem frames. But none were able to stop the Val-faask, like Jonah.
Rhome, present day
We sat quietly to let it all sink in. Shatoyarn stood up, "Thank you for telling me..," she closes her eyes and leaves the room.
"He depended on Gracia always. We had time to bond but we chose not to. We are at fault."
"It was a mistake," I said. Everyone looked at me, "I made the same. Never talked to anyone, always having to rely on just one person to know I'm not a monster..Is there a way we can stop him?"
"It would require the maximum output of the HALO system. You would need to bond with someone very closely. However- he surpasses all of us, one bond is not enough."
"One bond is always enough," I clench my fists.
"If you push the HALO system by yourself, the system will kill you," Alexis warned.
"It's a risk worth taking."
Kazuya runs inside the room, "Mori! Seldom ran off with the Elle Ciel!"
"What? Why would he-"
"He heard everything..he's going to face Luscious and the Twilight Moon."
"We need to stop him!"
Alexis tapped me on my shoulder, "Facing the twilight moon is dangerous in your state. You must find.. An unbreakable bond."
"We can't let seldom-"
"Send your troops to stall."
I nod, "Then what?"
"The third angel troupe will stay with you, they must develop the HALO system."
At the hangar I waved goodbye to my friends as they flew off in their battleships to rescue Seldom. When they were gone, it was now time to accomplish my mission. And fast.
Vanilla was there, with Eonia. Eonia faced me and I faced him. "Eonia, will assist you in our mission. We must sneak into EDEN, to the sky palace."
"Why there?"
"The relics and weapons EDEN once used are hidden beneath the sky palace. You only use at most a dozen of our many technologies. We must prepare for the battle ahead."
"What about the bonds?"
Kuromi appeared behind me with space-whale jr, "It will be a long trip ahead of you.
