Chapter Six: A new Town and new hope

It had been over a month since Adrienne had joined the Cirque. She had started to become more open, no longer shutting herself in from the world.

Evra had begun to teach her some what he knew about playing guitar and they began even closer now almost sibling status. She even was now able to feed Madam Octa without any difficulties at all. The spider seemed to enjoy the company she earned from the girl when Crepsley was asleep during the day. She would even receive daily walks with Adrienne. Larten was shocked his spider had taken to her so well. The spider would sometimes just sit on her shoulder while she read.

One night Crepsley was out walking the camp after he had gone off to get his monthly blood supplement. He heard Adrienne's soft giggling, it sounded like lovely bells ringing in his ears. Once again she had been out walking with Madam Octa, chattering away now that she was able to understand the spider.

"What do you mean I should ask him? No I don't think he even likes me in that way. Oh well of course he flirts but thats just who he is." He could hear his spider chattering back in soft sounds though he was too far off to fully tune into her sounds to understand them. Who were they talking about? Was there someone in the camp that she liked?

Larten started to feel a little jealous, did some little punk beat him to the chase? Well of course it had to have been some youngster in the camp. But who? Obviously it couldn't be Evra the two were practically brother and sister for crying out loud. Was there someone new to the camp that he didn't know about?

Larten began to pace back and forth his mind churning as he tried to figure out who this person was. No it couldn't be that wimpy dorky amphibian teen with the coke bottle glasses could it? No most certainly not Adrienne wouldn't fall for someone like him.

Or would she?

He stopped in mid pace, did he even stand a chance with a beautiful young woman like her? Was he...too old? He hadn't been that old when he was changed into a vampire...but...was he too old in her eyes?

He felt the muscles in his chest tighten at the thought. Did she think he was too old?

"Larten?"

He turned and saw Madam Truska standing there with a worried expression on her face. "Is everything alright you are looking paler than usual."

"I am fine Truska." He tried to reassure her but more importantly he tried to reassure himself.

"No you are not." She said stubbornly "I know that look you are worrying over something. What is it?" She pushed softly "Come one you used to always be able to talk to me why not now?"

"Its just...I just..." He sighed heavily rubbing his hand over his face and through his red curls.

"Oh I see...I know what this is about."

His eyes widened slightly "You do?"

"Its so plainly obvious I mean what with the way you have been looking at her since the moment she stepped foot into this cirque."

"Shhhhh!" He said before looking over his shoulder at her "Not so loud."

"Oh come on Larten why all the secrecy? You think she won't accept you? She is a girl talking to a spider. She is best friends with a snake boy. You really think she wouldn't accept a vampire? Go on give it a try." She pushed him toward Adrienne causing him to stumble. "And be a little more graceful! Where is that old world gentleman we all know."

Larten gave her a glare as he was becoming very annoyed with her very quick. "If this ends badly...I will eat you for dinner."

"Oh kinky."

"Oh...shut up." He groand as Truska laughed and walked away. He cleared his throat getting her attention. "I see my spider has once again betrayed me for you." He said trying to give a playful glare to the spider. "Oh no I know she spoils you there is nothing wrong with that." The spider made a few happy sounds before crawling down Adrienne's arm and leaping over to Larten.

"Its nice having another woman I can talk to...its just the whole spider thing is kind of interesting. Her dating advice is to have sex then eat him."

Larten laughed "Word of advice never take romance or relationship advice from a spider it all ends in the same way...eating the male."

The two shared a small laugh before silence fell over them and they started to walk. "You and I haven't been on a walk together in a few days now."

"Well It has been hectic with the moving to a new town."

"This is very true. Have you thought about possibly being in the show?"

"Oh no I couldn't what if my father found out where I was." Adrienne said quickly as her eyes widened.

"Adrienne look around you." They said as they reached the top of a small hill "All you see down there is your family. They wouldn't give you up without a war. And trust me, even the wolf man and miss Octa here would be involved. I have never seen two such animals as them like someone so well." Octa made a few sounds from her place on Larten's shoulder "Alright correction you are now the adopted daughter of a Spider. Never thought I would utter words such as those."

Adrienne smiled "Thank you Octa."

Larten cleared his throat again "Adrienne there has been something on my mind for a while now and I...I have been meaning to talk with you about it but I just don't know how to say it." He shifted nervously on his feet while Adrienne watched.

"Have I done something wrong?"

"What? Oh no, no nothing wrong I just um...wow this is a lot harder with a modern woman." He chuckled nervously to himself "I just I don't want to screw this up."

Adrienne blushed when Larten looked at her with very timid eyes. She felt her throat go dry as she looked at him. "Perhaps I should um...I should show you rather than tell you."

She nodded slowly "If you think it best." Her cheeks blushed a deeper red as Larten's face started to lean in closer to hers. His eyes locked with hers till the very last moment in which they closed. She felt his cool lips pressed to hers.

Not hard but soft, gentle. The kiss was loving but chaste. He didn't want to frighten or scare her off but he needed to show her he held feelings for her. When he pulled back Adrienne looked as though she were in a trance. "Andy?" He called gently trying to free her from said trance. "Andy?"

Finally her eyes opened, her cheeks were flushed but a smile formed on her face. "I was hoping that was going to happen." She spoke timidly.

"You did?" A smile grew on Larten's pale face, his eyes holding that twinkle once more. Slowly she nodded letting him draw her closer to him.

All the while Octa had jumped down from his shoulder. A spider web was now forming around the tree branches above their heads. Forming the shape of a heart. But neither Larten nor Adrienne paid any attention. They were content to stand there, his arms around her smaller frame while her face lay nestled into his chest.
