Green Eyes left a little after that for his next class. Actually, now that I know his name maybe I should refer to him as Edward. Or maybe not.
I decided to stay at the spot for a little longer. I went onto the grassy field and found a shady area underneath the tree. After sitting down, I breathed in the cool fresh air and took another look at my surroundings. It's been a long time since I've felt this peaceful. I pulled out a bag of chips and the book that I've recently been trying to finish: The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. I leaned back onto the tree, pulled open to the page where I left off, started munching, and began the descent towards the dark world.
During infancy, Nobody Owens (or for short, Bod) escaped what was to be a family murder by crawling to a nearby graveyard. There, he was raised and protected by the dwelling ghosts and an appointed guardian, who was neither dead nor living. All the while, the murderer of his family, Jack, was continuously looking for him. I followed Bod in his journey through adolescence: his schooling days, his first human friend, and his witch friend. Learning that the witch had no gravestone to honor her, he decides to buy her one by selling a brooch that he found at the burial chamber. This was marked as his first venture into the real world. He enters a pawn shop and gives the man the brooch. Recognizing that the brooch is made out of something very valuable, he asks Bod where he found it. Bod pushes it aside and repeats that all he wants to do is to sell the brooch. The man guides him to the back room, becoming persistent in knowing where he found it. No, Bod, I screamed in my head. Don't follow him! Bod refuses to let him know and the man locks him in the room. That fucker! Bod looks around, trying to find a way out. Meanwhile, the man reaches for a card that says "Jack" and wonders whether he should call him to tell him about the treasure. I swear to all deities, if that man even lays another finger on that phone, I am going to punch him in the face and rip out—
"I can't believe you're still here," said a voice beside me.
"HOLY MOTHER FUCKING PIECE OF—" I jumped. I looked beside me and saw the copper hair that was sitting next to me. "What the fuck, Green Eyes! You scared the living shit out of me!" I screamed, holding onto my chest. The bastard started laughing—actually, cackling. The fucker was pure evil. "My heart's still thumping like crazy and you're here laughing your ass off. For all you know, I could be having a heart attack!" I pushed him to the floor. Well, I tried; he was like one of those roly-poly toys—he never fell down, he just got back up again.
His laughter (cackle!) settled down a bit and he gave a smirk. "For all you know, Bella, your heart could be racing because I'm here," he winked. The bastard winked. I started gagging.
"Don't make me throw up, Green Eyes. Please. I'm begging you." I set down the book and looked at him. He cocked an eyebrow at me.
"Why are you calling me 'Green Eyes'? You know my name by now, don't you? Or have you already forgotten?" He gave an outrageous and exaggerated pout. After our last insightful conversation, this was the one of the last things I expected him to do. And any deity help me, it was really adorable.
I laughed. "Yeah, your uncommon name is something I had definitely forgotten." Then I shrugged and continued. "Your eyes are green; they were one of the things I first noticed about you. It ended up being what I called you whenever I chastised you in my head earlier today. So it kind of just stuck."
He made a soft "ah" sound and then we remained quiet for a while. I started picking at the grass. "So why are you here?" I asked.
"Stalking you." I punched him in the arm. This guy really enjoyed pushing my buttons.
He started laughing again. "Okay, okay. I just wanted some peace and quiet before I headed back to my apartment. It's nice being in a place that's dominated by nature, even if this one was manmade."
I nodded. "Yeah, but it's the closest that we'll get on campus."
We were quiet once again. But oddly enough, it wasn't eerie. It was a comfortable silence, one where I knew that a conversation wasn't always needed to keep me company. His mere presence was enough.
"So what were you reading?" he asked after a while. I handed him the book. "Ah, The Graveyard Book. It's a very interesting read for a children's novel."
I smiled and nodded. "It's pretty dark, yet light in many aspects. I think I'll be finished with it before the weekend reaches."
"Do you know what you'll be reading next?"
I looked at him like he was crazy and shook my head. "I usually go to the bookstore and explore. I rarely go in knowing what I'm looking for. It kind of takes the fun out of it, you know?"
He shook his head and looked as if he was holding back a laugh. "No, I don't know. You're an odd duck, you know that?"
"If anything, I'd be an odd swan," I laughed.
"And why would that be?" he said, amused.
"Because my last name is Swan." He looked as if he was contemplating something.
"I know, weird right?" I said. "Swans are supposed to be graceful and beautiful. And here I am throwing out every curse word I know."
He opened his mouth and looked as if he wanted to say something. Instead, he let out a sigh and shook his head. "I think we're going to need to employ a curse jar," he joked.
"You'll never take me alive!"
He laughed. "Going back to the book thing, I was thinking about going to the city library soon. Do you want to come with me? We can go during the weekend, if you'd like."
"I don't know, Green Eyes… We just met. Shouldn't you have me pining for you before you ask me on a date?" I said, smiling.
"Aren't you already?" he winked.
"Ha! You wish! But fine, I guess I'll cave for now. When do you want to go?"
"How about Saturday?"
"Okay. Should we meet here?"
He nodded. "But, just to be safe, we should swap numbers. I don't want to wait here all day if you decide to stand me up," he said, jokingly.
"Oh gosh, Edward, if that's how you plan on getting a girl's number in the future, I feel sorry for her," I laughed. I gave him my phone so that he'd input his information. He then called his phone and that was that. All of a sudden, my stomach growled and I knew it was nearing dinner time.
