Chapter 5

"I'm Acacia Smith, Mr. Roger's new personal assistant," she introduced. She gave a polite bow of her head before glancing up at him. Acacia couldn't tell if he had accepted her introduction or even if he recognized her name. His face was a stone wall that let nothing go through. He casually turned to Steve and away from her.

"Were my agents not good enough for you?" Fury asked. "You would rather place a child in danger than giving a job to a capable field agent?"

"No, Sir that was not my reason behind choosing here," Steve answered. He glanced back his blue eyes meeting hers before turning back to Fury with a stern expression. "I picked someone that wouldn't feel an obligation to work for me and would do their job better than anyone else. I honestly believe that Ms. Smith was the correct decision."

Fury looked annoyed at his answer. Acacia was just surprised that he went against authority. She found herself happy, but at the same time feeling even more nervous. What if Fury thought this was strange and going to look her up and monitor her every second?

"Well, I had two prime candidates for the position." Acacia shivered when a smile crept onto his face. "If she beats them in a fight I'll let her have the position."

Everyone in the room turned to look at Acacia and she stared back before averting her eyes. If she fought and made it obvious that she was strong it would look suspicious. If she fought and lost her temper she would expose her identity. If she just gave up it wouldn't sit well with her; she'd never been a fan of losing. If she fought and made it look like a fluke it could work. That was all she had to do. She had to make her win look fortuitous and she would be fine.

"I mean might as well…" Acacia answered. She crossed her arms trying to seem insecurity. "I only lose my pride, income, and possibly some function of my limbs. What harm could it do?"

Tony and Steve had blank looks on their faces while Fury was still smiling. Acacia knew that definitely wasn't a good sign.

The room Acacia had been brought to was filled with various weights and mats for training. The ceiling was high with beams and windows acted as a barrier from the outside world, but she could still see the busy streets of New York City. Other than that it looked like an over glorified exercise room. Nothing big.

However, her eyes did focus in on two familiar blonde heads. One with golden curls and a noticeably flat chest, and the other with an irritating bob and haughty stance. The two girls turned around to face Acacia.

"Ms. Smith, this is Agent Goldberg and Agent Evergreen," Fury introduced. The two girls kept their eyes on her. Elaine Evergreen was probing her for information while Agent Goldberg wanted to murder her with her eyes.

"You can call me Acacia if you like," she offered. Elaine offered a nod in her direction.

"Elaine." She stiffly stuck out her hand and Acacia shook it. Everyone in the room watched the slightly awkward interaction. "That's Katherine in case you were wondering. The formalities always are a little awkward for us younger agents we should drop them."

"I'm not an agent," Acacia stated. "I'm simply a secretary." Elaine abruptly turned around and faced Nick Fury before pointing at Acacia.

"Does she have the clearance to be here?" she asked.

"Yes," Katherine answered. "I filled out her forms early with her. She was granted access to this. However, I doubt she would come here without a reason or purpose. She hardly seems like the type to exercise."

"Actually I'm pretty good at yoga." Katherine shot Acacia a reprimanding glare as if to tell her not to speak. "Just saying…"

"Why is she here?" Fury regarded Katherine with a look telling her to watch her mouth before relaxing.

"You are all here, so that we may figure out who is the most suitable to be Captain Rogers secretary. We men will be leaving you so you may decide amongst yourselves who is right for the job."

"Good god, you just want us to have a cat fight," Elaine said, with surprise lacing her voice.

"It's only a real cat fight if someone adds mud or jello to the ring," Tony cut in. "We're just testing all of your skills."

"I do not fight." The blonde began to pull her curls back out of her eyes with a band as she continued. "I work with technology only I do not plan on working as a secretary."

"I'm afraid that's not your decision. It's an order." Elaine looked Fury in the eyes and nodded her head in understanding. "We'll let you know when to start."

Acacia watched as the men left the room leaving the three girls to stand together. Sizing them up she knew Elaine would throw this, even if her opponent wasn't her she'd throw the match show she could continue working in the labs that SHIELD had to offer. Katherine was another story completely. She looked ready to attack and by the way she was purposely squaring up her shoulders towards Elaine it meant that she was going to attack Acacia first, but only wanted to trick her.

"Where exactly did they go?" Acacia asked. The two girls looked at her and Elaine offered a smile.

"There's a viewing room, so they can watch us. I'm sure they're going there," she answered. "Well let's just not kill each other, even if all's fair in love and war."

"Shut it Evergreen," Katherine said. If Acacia wasn't mistaken there was some pink on her cheeks. She finally knew why the girl hated her, and it was because she had a crush on her boss.

"Well…" Acacia glanced at Katherine. "You could do better than him. You know someone with a clue to how to act in society."

"Shut it bitch." Acacia blinked and let a dangerous smile cross her face.

"Well, I'm mad now. Hopefully we'll start soon, so I can hit you." The other girl merely scoffed at her not caring at all about what she said. Oh it was on.

"They're talking about you Captain." Tony nudged Steve who just ignored him. "Although Acacia's not as polite as we thought."

"It would hard to be nice in this situation…" Steve answered. He glanced at Acacia who was showing a chilling smile to the other girls. She looked ready to fight. "She's got to be a little upset about this whole thing at least." Tony just shrugged at him before turning to Nick Fury who was standing by an operating machine in the room as well as a young male agent.

"Are you positive we can't add some mud to this?" Tony asked Fury. The serious man glanced at him before turning away.

"No, I want to test something," he stated. "Where is she from?"

"She's from a small town in Ohio," Steve answered. "Why?"

"She just looks like someone we'd recruit. I'm wondering who missed her on our radar." The two men stared at him waiting for him to elaborate.

"How does she look like someone we would recruit?" an agent in the room asked. He was monitoring the room as well as power and security.

"Her attitude. She's confident with a strong sense of justice. If she lives up to my expectations we might offer her a contract with us, even if it's just as Roger's secretary."

"What exactly does she have to show for that to happen?" Fury merely shot Tony a smile.

"They can teach a lot of things in the academy, but there are two things they can never teach; resourcefulness and composure. Without those things an agent will be of no use in the field. Let them start."

Steve looked at the girls worried as they were about to start the fight before he felt an arm slung across his neck. He looked to see Tony grinning at him.

"Look a little more excited to see three gorgeous women fighting over you," he joked. Steve just sighed. He didn't need anyone to get hurt.

As soon as the start signal was given Acacia dropped to the ground and rolled under Agent Goldberg as she lunged at her. She got up and at that point Elaine attacked the other girl as Acacia retreated to a corner to watch the fight play out. She began to look for things to do and noticed the edge of the mat they had been standing on before smirking.

The two blondes were going hard at each other and she was mentally congratulating Elaine for not being the push-over she had been during their childhood. She actually wanted to cheer for her when she landed a solid hit to the girl's stomach.

Katherine looked angry though as she lashed out at Elaine, but Acacia decided to continue on with her little adventure around the room. She stopped at the nearest weight machine and took the cord off of it and a twenty pound weight and struggling to get a hundred pound weight off of its stand. She tossed the cord over a beam discreetly and glanced back at the two girls. Elaine was looking worn out and Katherine was still going strong.

She tied the weights on the end of the cord and left the cord hanging over the beam by itself. She watched as Katherine landed a final hit on Elaine sending her down. Acacia quickly climbed the weight machine and Katherine turned around her eyes connecting with hers before she leaped into the air and swung at her.

"She's gonna feel that one in the morning," Stark said as he watched Acacia's foot connect with Agent Goldberg's jaw.

The girl leaned down over the other's body after she hopped down from her position in the air. She had a somewhat teasing smile on her face. It was clear that the agent was still conscious.

"I'm actually the flying bitch of the west," Acacia joked. She raised her hand and landed the finishing punch to the girl's jaw. "Oh god, so worth the extra effort to hit her."

Steve was surprised that Acacia had been that resourceful, but he was more surprised at her somewhat over forceful nature. She seemed a lot different from when he first met her. The unnecessary roughness and foreign look of thrill in her eyes was surprising. He found himself worrying about the girl she had defeated.

"How interesting…" Fury muttered. Steve had just caught what he said under his breath and for some reason he was worrying even more.

Hey so this may be late in the day, but I still updated on time… Now about that next update, I won't even start writing the chapter until I have one review. I'm writing to get the opinion of others on things like plot and character development. This is also receiving a lot of views from members of fanfiction that could easily take thirty seconds to drop me a quick review. Sorry about requiring this, but I really want to know what my readers are thinking because it does have an impact on my next chapters like if there will be more Steve and Acacia moments or more comedy.
