Chapter 6
Acacia was expected to be greeted with praise as Steve poured into the room, but Steve quickly passed her and picked up Katherine.
"Where is the hospital wing located?" Steve asked turning to Nick Fury. He had a gleam in his eye that disgusted Acacia.
"Straight to your right and down the hall," he replied. The two of them were gone before she could say anything. Acacia glanced toward Elaine and then at Nick Fury.
"Isn't anyone concerned about her?" she asked. Honestly, men always pick the wrong women to save.
"Agent Evergreen will be fine," he stated. "If you don't mind I would like to speak with you."
"I do mind," Acacia snapped. "I only want to do my job and that's it. I'm a secretary and that's all. If you want something else from me I can't help you."
"That's fine." The man let something akin to a grin appear on his face. "If you ever need any favors though you can contact me and I'm sure we can make a deal. I'm the director of SHIELD, Nick Fury."
Acacia gave a polite nod to him before leaving the room. Not seeing Steve or Tony in sight she decided it was best to take some time to cool down. She left the building hoping to find a way to clear her head. She needed to before things spiraled out of control and her cover was blown.

"Captain." Steve jolted away from the girl he had placed on the hospital bed and looked back at Tony Stark. He was leaning against the wall relaxed, but with a trouble expression. "Don't you think you should have at least congratulated Acacia?"
A doctor walked in and began to take a look at the girl while Steve thought about it.
"Agent Goldberg was hurt," Steve said.
"Not really," a voice quipped. The two men looked to face a young looking male with orange hair and green eyes. He couldn't be older than twenty-three. "She was knocked unconscious, but whoever did this is very skilled. The original hit is enough to dislocate the jaw which can be easily placed in, but is very painful; knocking Kathy out was probably a good call. When she wakes up she'll have a headache and slight swelling, but that's it."
"Um… who exactly are you?" Tony asked.
"Ah, sorry. My names Aiden Trenton and I just started working as a medical researcher here," he stated. "Unfortunately they like to stick me here most of my day, so I don't get much research done. Before you ask I'm twenty-one and fully qualified to perform open heart surgery. I'm a genius, but you know what that's like Mr. Stark."
"So she's going to be completely fine?" Steve asked.
"Well knowing her she'll be pissed, but perfectly healthy," Aiden stated. "I kind of want to meet the person who did this though… I wonder if it was just a fluke accident."
"That would be Ms. Smith his secretary." Tony pointed at Steve with a smirk and watched as shock came across the young man's face.
"No way!" he exclaimed. "Does she have former training?"
"Nope she figured it out by using her street smarts and a simple machine." The boy sat and rubbed his chin in thought.
"She must have realized that she could do serious damage then and eased the blow. It's quite incredible really."
A beeping sound resounded through the room and Tony took out his phone. He read the text and his brow furrowed.
"Acacia said she left and will meet as at the tower after she takes a little break." He put away the phone. "I'm heading out. Are you coming Captain?"
"Yeah, I'll be right there."
Aiden Trenton watched the two heroes leave wondering where he had heard the name Acacia Smith before.

"Stop let go of me!" Acacia screamed. She was in pain as needle upon needle was put into her skin. Some were taking blood from her while others were injecting unknown liquid into her.
The very people who said that it would be okay to trust them had knocked her out and tied her to a plain white table. She struggled as much as she could, not wanting to be a lab experiment. She knew this would happen. This is what people did to monsters like her.
"NO!" Instantly blinding purple light filled the room and cut through the restraints on her and some of the equipment. She panicked thinking she may have hurt one of the doctors, but went to the door. She tried desperately to pull it open or push it open, but it didn't budge. Not knowing what to do, she let her power surge through and the door was sliced by her power and she walked out.
She could never look back. There was no more of trusting new people for her. It would be a death wish.
"Are you okay Ms?" Acacia was jarred from her thoughts by a small voice. She looked around to realize that it was already night in the city and lights were sparkling everywhere. A small hand waved in front of her face. She looked down to see a small little girl probably no older than five. Even though fall was just beginning she was bundled up in a coat and had mittens on her hands.
"I'm just fine," Acacia said faking a smile. She was anything, but fine. She had thought about the last three years of her life and practically everything that was wrong with her. If she had to choose how to describe herself at the moment it would be mentally and emotionally unstable.
"You don't look fine," she said. Her brow furrowed and an adorable pout came across her lips. "My mama says that we should talk about our problems. Like this one time my brother broke Barbie! So what's your problem?"
"I don't have one I was just thinking too hard." The little girl crossed her arms as if she didn't believe her. She thought about how kids were getting smarter. She could bet her life though that they were still easily amused. "Want to see something cool kid?"
"Sarah is a big girl! Not a kid!" the child protested. "But sure." Acacia let out a genuine chuckle at that.
"I'll show you just a bit of magic, but you have to keep it a secret." She placed her finger to her lips and the little girl nodded her head eagerly. "Promise?" She held out her pink and the girl took it and shook it quickly.
Sarah removed her pinky from Acacia's and stood there staring at her. Acacia held her hand flat and simply concentrated on forming something. Her power was activated simply because of her thinking pattern. Her ability was rare and not usually scene in people like her. She had the ability to stabilize matter in a form that was representative of a nuclear reaction. The atoms formed by it gave off an amethyst light and seemed to originate from her blood stream. She wasn't too sure about the details herself, but she knew it could slice buildings cleanly and produce an impenetrable barrier.
Small flashing rectangles swirled around and Acacia watched as the little girl's eyes began to sparkle. They soon came together and produced a glowing rose that floated slightly above Acacia's outstretched palm. The little girl must have gone by her instincts and reached out to touch it. She did and took her hand back as soon as a sizzling noise met her ears.
"Whoa!" she exclaimed. Acacia had dropped the rose and was looking intently at the young Sarah's hand. She sighed in relief when she noticed she had just singed her mitten.
"Sorry about your mitten," Acacia said. Her eyes were staring at the ground as she mentally reprimanded herself. She shouldn't have showed a child that.
"That was so cool!" Sarah threw her arms in the air as she laughed. Acacia felt herself ease into laughter herself. Before looking at the girl and patting the top of her head.
"Where's your mom kid?" She asked.
"Oh yeah," Sarah tilted her head before giggling. "I was going to ask you to help me find her."
"Geeze you should say that stuff sooner." Acacia took her hand and stood up from the bench she was sitting on. "Let's go find her."
With that Acacia set off on search for Sarah's mom, feeling more human than she had in a long time.

Acacia walked into the elevator in Stark Tower feeling slightly high on happiness. After locating Sarah's mother she had been invited to dinner and had reluctantly accepted the offer. Sarah's mother was Lindsey a single parent with two children who had spent the afternoon searching for Sarah in the park. Sarah's little brat of a brother was named Conner, but he still seemed relieved to see that she was okay.
It was the first time Acacia had sat down and had a meal with good people in about a year and a half. She had enjoyed it greatly and was very thankful. When the elevator dinged she stepped out and ran into a solid chest. She jumped back a little surprised and looked up to see Steve Rogers staring down at her with a stern look.
"Where were you?" he asked. Acacia blinked up at him surprised by his demanding tone.
"Out," she answered. He raised his eyebrow at her answer.
"Is that how you speak to your employer? Who gave your permission to stay out so long?"
"I texted Tony and he said that it was okay. He is the one who pays me you know. I was with a friend it's no big deal."
"Being out that late in New York City is dangerous. You should be more careful."
"Nice to know you'll worry about me after worrying about others." Acacia walked by him without another word.
Steve stood there and felt a since of déjà vu run through him. Maybe he had misjudged Acacia or maybe it was just a bad day. She probably didn't like being exposed to an agency like SHIELD and was slightly upset about that. Not only that, but she also had to fight others and Acacia didn't strike him as someone who liked fighting. He could just sense that about her. Maybe tomorrow would be a better day.
So not really that exciting, but Acacia's true self is beginning to come out a little more which necessary for her to get closer to Steve. The next chapter will have a little more about those two in it. Hopefully, you enjoyed learning about her powers a little more. I also felt like Steve would care more about someone who was injured than the winner of a fight. Hope you understand!
One review for me to continue and maybe just maybe there might be an update next weekend, but I make no promises!
Thank you for reading!
Chelsea Di Marco Macbeth: Thank you for your review! I'm sorry that this chapter wasn't all too humorous, but there was maybe a tiny bit. The next chapter will take on a lighter tone so there will be some joking in it. I revealed a little bit more about Acacia's powers and if you have any more questions about that I'd be glad to answer them. Someone will be finding out about Acacia soon, but it won't be Steve. Hope you enjoyed the chapter!
Guest: Although I don't know who you are I'm happy that you said my character wasn't a Mary-Sue. That's honestly one of the best compliments I can receive about my writing. Thank you and I hope you enjoyed the chapter. :)
RedCarnationX: I'm happy you liked the last chapter and I hope that you enjoyed reading more about Acacia's powers. You will be seeing a bit more of Steve and Acacia getting closer soon so I hope you will enjoy that too. Thank you for reviewing!
Loveorpain: She has not given herself away yet, but she might soon. I hope you enjoyed the chapter and thank you for your review.
