The ice cracked beneath our feet, shattering into glimmering frozen shards. All around us, the shadows grew, stretching to unnatural lengths. Jack pulled me behind him, and his staff came whizzing through the air and into his open hand, the moment utterly ruined. A low chuckled escaped the shadows and a thin figure slinked out of the darkness. His face was an ashen gray, and he materialized from the inky black that surrounded him.

"Oh, how adorable," he chuckled, and the shadows grew, dimming the pale light of the moon. A the silvery light disappeared, I felt my heart clutch in my chest. He was suddenly in front of me, a hand ready to stroke my face. "Mimzy, is it?"

"Don't touch her!" Jack swung his staff around, but missed as the man was enveloped by the shadows. My heart jumped in my chest as the shadows stretched and curved above us, creating a dome of utter blackness. I couldn't see Jack. I couldn't see my own hand if I waved it in front of my face.

Two brawny arms wrapped around me from behind, squeezing me up against a sturdy chest. Lips touched my ear, and Tobias whispered, "Hey toots." His grip got tighter and I gasped. No. My chest erupted in a fury of pain as my elbows pressed into my hips, and Tobias pressed tighter against him.

"Now, now, Tobias," the voice of the dark character whispered, so close to us. "We can't go damaging our new pet."

I heard a strangled yelp and imagined Jack falling to his knees in the dark. I tried to scream, tried to get his attention, but my breathing came short. The softness behind my eyes began to ache and white prickles of light danced across my vision. Tobias was laughing in my ear, his voice mingling with the black shadows. Just as I slumped against him, fading into unconsciousness, the black shadows suddenly burst apart above me. White moonlight broke through and in fell four blurry figures.

"Shit," Tobias growled in my ear, and his grip around me tightened. Someone shouted, and all I could think of was Jack again. Something snapped inside me, something angry and useless in Tobias' arms.

So I decided to get him off my back.

Slamming my foot down, I crushed Tobias' toes and threw my head back. White dots slipped into my vision as the back of my head connected with his nose. His arms fell away from me and I turned. He was clutching his nose and blood ran over his fingers. He met my eyes and flicked the blood off his hand.

"You little –"

Bunnymund suddenly popped up behind him and grabbed the collar of his shirt. "Not today, mate," and pulled him, Tobias shouting, down into his hole.

Accomplished, and dizzy, I glanced around the shadows that were fading. A cool hand gripped my upper arm and Pitch swung me around to face him.

"Thought you could get away so easily?"

I opened my mouth to retort when Baby Tooth flew into his forehead with a gentle smack. Pitch growled and flapped his hand but she continued to buzz around him. Toothiana's hand settled on my shoulder and she yanked me back, away from Pitch, and put her hands under my arms.

"No!" I screamed as she lifted me up into the air. "No, Jack! We've gotta get Jack!"

Under my feet I watched as Sandy threw his whip into the shadows, edging back the streaming black horses that guarded a cowardly Pitch. North, with Bunnymund popping up beside him, shouted and flicked away the shoulders, screaming for Jack. I flailed in Toothiana's arms, tears brimming in my eyes.

"Sandy!" She shouted, and everything went dark.
