In That Moment
This is just an idea that popped in my head when I was watching The Name of the Doctor. It starts right after the Doctor asks River how he is supposed to say goodbye.
Everything belongs to BBC unfortunately
"There is only one way I'd accept it," She looked on the verge of tears "Say it like you're going to come back." Her voice wavered and her heart shook in fear when he stepped back. A look of revelation crossed his face. "Well then," he bit his lip and raised his hairless eyebrows. He took another step back, his back turned and spun around to face her again.
A coy smile graced his lips "See you around…. Professor River Song." He looked up at her, almost hopefully. She grinned, almost as if relieved. "Till the next time… Doctor."
The Doctor grinned to her and himself, truly please. He had missed their flirting. Truly, genuinely missed it. River's grin turned smug.
"Oh there's one more thing." The Doctor turned to face her. He chuckled to himself. "Isn't there always?" She ignored his little playful gibe, still grinning smugly.
"I was mentally linked with Clara. If she is really dead, how am I still here?" Her eyes were alight with mischief. His grin slid off his face and his expression screamed 'Oh. OH." The Doctor composed himself and let out a breath to prevent jumping about. He didn't need any more weird looks from Vestra, Strax, and Jenny.
"Okay," He said slowly, he spread his arms apart and clasped them back together. "How?" He asked, already knowing River's answer.
"Spoilers." Her signature phrase with her signature, coy smile. He bit his lip again as numerous possibilities raced through his mine. River looked to him one last time. "Goodbye," She began to fade "Sweetie." And she was gone. He had lost her again. Though maybe, just maybe there was hope. She had hinted, merely hinted at an impossible possibility. Maybe she wasn't linked to Clara but rather one of the other three, or more than one. Or maybe even himself. He had been seeing her ever since Verilian. But the point was that, as a data ghost, she wouldn't be able to mentally link with anyone because she was an echo, she didn't really have a mind of her own. So how were they able to have been communicating with her? Certainly not through the TARDIS. That means that maybe, just maybe, she had survived.
The Doctor turned on his heel and faced the scared tissue of the universe caused by him. Though there was the impossible possibility that River would be saved, he had to deal with the matters at hand first. He had to save Clara, then he could figure out how he did it. The Doctor stepped into the vortex.
Later: River Song's POV
She plugged the cables together, and something flashed, and there was a great burning sensation. Amidst the impossibly loud silence in the Library, River thought she heard the familiar sounds of… VRWOOP VRWOOP VRWOOP
Don't you dare, she thought to herself. I said not one line, don't you dare. And everything went dark.
When River opened her eyes she was blinded. She blinked, giving her eyes a second to adjust. Suddenly there was a hand on her forehead.
"Hi honey." His voice was different. Older, more mature, more gravelly. "We're home." Her double hearts sped up. She knew that voice, no matter how different it seemed. The Doctor had come. Her Doctor.
End.
This was just a theory that popped in my head when I was watching Name of the Doctor. I want you to think about this for a second. In the FoD/SitL when River sacrifces herself, though both her brain and hearts would be fried, and she'd be dead, THERE STILL WOULD'VE BEEN A BODY! SHE WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN VAPORIZED! Just think about it…. There now you see? Hope you enjoyed! Please leave a review if you could. And yes that was 12 at the end. I think he'll be a bloody brilliant Doctor, and quite frankly, I can't wait.
