Moira was convinced that she was having an out of body experience. Time seemed to stop. She saw herself standing next to Robert, his hand on the small of her back as Malcolm stood frozen in front of the bar with two glasses of champagne.
"Oh, good you two have met." Her husband filled in non-chalantly. "Was I there?" They all laughed, Malcolm not taking his eyes off her. Moira put her hand on Robert's arm.
"Malcolm and I knew each other in high school." She locked eyes with her former love. "We were good friends." She hoped she imagined the microscopic wince on Malcolm's face.
"Really? I thought you said your mother was in Gotham?" Robert asked Malcolm.
"She moved after I left for Oxford. That's when we lost touch." He simplified. The truth was a little more complicated. They started by writing every day, then as work piled up it became every few days. Then weeks, then months. Eventually they just stopped. "It's good to see you again." Malcolm flashed a warm smile that made it impossible for her not to smile as well. "It's been far too long."
" It certainly has. When did you move to Starling?" Moira asked.
"Oh about six months ago. We decided it was time to be state-side again."
"We?" Just as the question left her mouth a tall, sophisticated brunette slid next to Malcolm. He looked over and smiled brightly passing the second glass of champagne to her.
"Moira, Robert, this is Rebecca, my wife." He glanced at Moira as if checking if she was ok. Moira hoped she had gotten better at her poker face since they were teens. She didn't understand why the idea of Malcolm being married surprised her so. After all, she wasn't the same woman she was six years ago, why would he be the same? She smiled and shook Rebecca's hand. "I met Robert at the Starling Bank luncheon and it turns out that he is married to Moira, who is an old friend from high school."
" Well, isn't it a small world." Rebecca laughed a little at the co-incidence. The conversation was about to fall into awkwardness when Robert came to the rescue.
"What do you do Rebecca?"
" I'm a Doctor. Well, as soon as they verify my medical licences I will be." She said rolling her eyes.
"Rebecca is looking to open a clinic in the glades." Moira and Robert both looked at her impressed.
"I'm a helper. I might as well play to my strengths." Rebecca brushed off her husband's praise.
"Well in that case, allow me to go introduce you to some people with bleeding hearts and deep pockets." Robert offered Rebecca his arm. " That way these two can play catch up without boring us to death." Rebecca looked over to Malcolm to verify he was ok with Robert's plan.
"I want her back in one piece, otherwise I'm keeping Moira." They all laughed before the mismatched pairs split off. Malcolm looked at her. "Good friends?" He teased
"You want him to invest in your company don't you?" She teased back.
"Moira Green, forever the diplomat. Or I guess it's Moira Queen now." He said more as a statement than a question. "How long have you been married?"
"Four years. We have a three year old son, Oliver."
" Same age as ours, his name is Tommy." Moira couldn't help but smile at the way Malcolm's face lit up when he mentioned his son. They looked around the room while each of them tried to figure out how to catch up on six missed years in an unknown number of minutes.
"How did you meet?" Moira eventually asked.
" Travelling." Malcolm summarized "I used to buy these train passes and just go to the station and pick the next one leaving. One time that got me to Vienna. Rebecca was staying at the same hostel and we hit it off." He looked over at their spouses who had now joined a larger circle of people who were all listening to Rebecca animatedly tell a story. He looked back at Moira "Robert?"
"Not nearly as interesting." She said finishing her drink. "We were introduced at a party, talked a bit and then he asked for my phone number. By the time he was graduating the next spring we were engaged. Wedding planning was far more interesting than school so I took a semester off and never went back."
"And here we are." Malcolm completed.
"Here we are." She smiled. " I always knew that if I ever found you, you and Robert would get along."
"Found me? So you were looking." He stated.
" I kept my eyes open." Moira admitted. " I still send your mother a Christmas card. I'm surprised she didn't tell me you were coming home. Then again, she didn't tell me you were married."
"That would be because I haven't spoken to her since Rebecca and I got engaged." He said blankly. Moira was surprised.
"So you fall in love with a lovely young medical student and there's a problem?"
"When that medical student gets pregnant and instead of getting your masters degree you buy an engagement ring." Malcolm exhaled. "That's when there's a problem."
"What about your father?" Moira couldn't help herself from asking.
" We're not bad. We see each other once or twice a year. He's much better with Tommy then he every was with me. Though apparently that's a thing with grandparents." As more couples crowded around the bar the pair found themselves pushed towards a window. Malcolm decided to take the hint and guided Moira to a couple of nearby chairs. " The Greens?" Moira's good mood faltered slightly.
"We lost my dad just after Oliver was born, heart attack." She explained. " Mom's still back home normally, though we just sent her on a cruise so it will be a couple of weeks before I can tell her. She'll be glad to hear you're doing well. She always liked you."
"Always?" He arched an eyebrow.
"Eventually." She conceded. She sighed as the silence encroached again. This wasn't going anywhere near how she had planned it. After six years she doubted anything could live up to the day dreams she had. She felt someone take her hand and looked down. There were a couple of marks she didn't recognize, and a wedding band that didn't match hers. She looked up to meet sad eyes.
" I'm sorry about your Dad. I wish I had been here for you. I wish I had kept writing."
" Me too." She smiled sadly squeezing his hand before letting go. "But you're here now." He smiled. An announcement from the stage indicated the speeches would be starting shortly. "Now, shall we go find them?" Malcolm got up first and offered his hand to Moira. She used it to get up from the chair but let it go when she stood.
"Probably a good idea." He used his height to their advantage and guided her through the crowd to Rebecca and Robert.
By the end of the event contact information had been exchanged and an invitation to visit Queen manor the next weekend had been extended.
"See I knew I had a good feeling about him. I must have sensed the connection to you." Robert said in the car on their way home. " I get the feeling this is going to be a good thing."
Moira smiled. She quietly took the hand, with the matching ring, and gave it a small squeeze.
