A/N: Ok so here it is the long awaited second chapter! I am sorry it took so long between life and work and school I have had zero time to write! But hopefully I will find more time soon!
Chapter 2:
Percy yawned as he looked out over the city of Edoras. The young demi god was told to stand outside by Grima Wormtongue, which irritated the young man, for he had been assigned by the king himself to protect his son Prince Theodred at all times and could only be told otherwise by the king. However that slimy little weasel had handed Percy a piece of paper with the king's signature so Percy, who swore allegiance to Théoden, had to follow the "orders".
Flashback:
You see after Percy had woken up he had found a hobbit fussing over him saying things like 'how did such a large lad fall from the sky?' The hobbit later revealed himself to be Bilbo Baggins. Percy thought the elder hobbit to be odd in nature but enjoyed his company, he had stayed with Bilbo for a week or so as he got his strength back and in that week Bilbo started the healing process on the demigod's heart.
After that time Percy made his way towards the city of Bree, where he found work as a stable hand at an inn. It was there that Percy discovered that he still kept his ability to talk to horses and enjoyed many a conversation with the steeds while working in the stable at the Prancing Pony. It was there that a nobleman from Rohan had found that his horses looked healthier for having the young man care for them, the nobleman had decided to hire Percy to be the Stable Master for his estate. Percy, who had been enjoying a quiet life without monsters and wars agreed almost instantly and left later that day with the nobleman's entourage. That is when fate intervened.
As the group headed east Percy decided to take in his surroundings, the forest air was clean and the day was perfect for riding. The demigod also noticed that amongst the group there was one attendant, four guardsmen who had swords, the nobleman, and Percy. As they rode Percy's danger alert kept rising, finally once they made it halfway between a narrow pass they were pounced upon by a band of creatures, "Orcs" as Percy heard one of the guards cry out just before he was cut down.
Percy's battle instincts kicked in as he leapt of his horse, diving for the fallen guardsman's sword. In one movement the demigod had landed, grabbed the sword, and slashed through one of the orcs and so the fight went Percy leaping around and helping the guards where he could but he wasn't perfect and the guards weren't that skilled, soon all that were left facing another ten or so orcs were Percy, the nobleman and his attendant, both of whom were absolutely worthless in this fight. Now Percy knew he could take the orcs, they were brutish and slow, while Percy was…well Percy, but he had to protect the nobleman so he stood in a defensive position while the orcs were laughing and proclaiming how hungry they were.
Percy was paying so much attention to the orcs in front of him that he didn't notice an orc above the pass with a bow aimed right at him. Only the whine of one of the horses alerted him just in time to roll out of the way, but that did two things, one: it made him roll right into the group of orcs and two: it left the nobleman wide open and it wasn't a second later that the noble's head was separated from his shoulders followed by his attendant's. Percy quickly took them out after that seeing as how he didn't have to protect anyone else.
After the orcs were all dead Percy sighed and sank to a seated position on a nearby rock, it had been a few months since he worked that hard and was a little winded. Percy looked up just in time to see that was just about to rain and realized that while he might not get wet he would still get cold. So he set to work on the morbid task of removing the armor from the guard with the least amount of gore and put it on. It was the standard armor of the Rohirrim, though Percy didn't put the helmet on, he also found a spare cloak amongst the noble's pack and swung the dark blue cloak over the brown leather armor. He moved the bodies off the road so that if a cart came his way it would be easier to load them.
It was then that Percy took notice to the sword now hanging on his side, it was a straight, double edged, one handed, sword resembling something that the Vikings would use. Not something he was used to but it would do. It was then that he heard a thunderous sound and knew that trouble was coming. Drawing his sword, Percy moved to the middle of the pass and waited.
That was the scene that Eomer and fifty of the Rohirrim came upon, a cloaked figure dressed in their armor blocking their path. "You there what happened here!" cried the captain of the horsemen. "There was an ambush, we were on our way to Rohan when Orcs came from above and swarmed us. I tried to keep everyone alive but as you can see I failed." Percy answered back solemnly. "Who are you then stranger?" Asked Eomer as he dismounted seeing the young man relax and sheathed his sword. "I am Percy and was hired to be the noble's Stable Master, but that won't be happening now." Percy replied with a morose chuckle.
Eomer was in disbelief; a stable boy had slain thirty orcs and was unscathed? There was something the boy wasn't telling them. That's when it started to rain, and when the Rohirrim saw that while they got soaked in the downpour, Percy stayed dry. "Ah you're a wizard why didn't you say so? Men, let's take the bodies back to Edoras and you young man are coming with us." Eomer said as he walked back towards his horse. Percy, confused about the wizard remark, called over the noble's which was chestnut brown and called himself 'Kicker' mounted up and followed the Rohirrim back to the city of Edoras.
On the way Percy had his suspicions that something wasn't right. He was proven correct when upon their arrival Percy was brought before Théoden to stand trial to answer the questions of the king. When Percy explained what had happened again the king asked whether he wanted to become a warrior for the kingdom. Percy agreed, they were known as the Horse-Lords so of course he would, it was then that he swore to obey the king and protect the land from any threat.
Percy was assigned to the Prince's squad and was immediately accepted for the fact that on their first outing Percy volunteered to care for the men's horses and after the horses looked and felt the healthiest they ever had. The squad would do routine patrol and fight mini squabbles with anything that posed a threat towards the kingdom. It was during one such squabble that Percy saved Theodred's life by blocking a strike that would have cleaved the prince's head in two. After that the king made Percy Theodred's personal guard and the two became best friends.
End Flashback:
Percy hadn't been on a patrol with the squad in almost a month and it was making him nervous, in his gut he knew something bad was going to happen and a few minutes later he felt his stomach drop as Eomer rode through the city with fourteen other Rohirrim, they had gone to find the prince's patrol, it had been a few hours late. Percy saw the prince, the one he was charged to protect, sitting limply in Eomer's saddle and a sense of dread filled him.
Percy stood outside the room while the healer's did what they could, he heard Eomer and Grima arguing about the weasel's allegiance, Eomer had the slimy man pinned against a pillar of the hall when two of the goons men grabbed Eomer and pulled him off Grima. Percy started making his way towards Eomer's side to help him, apart from Theodred, Eomer was Percy's closest friend, but Eomer shook his head at Percy signaling to stay back. It was then Grima pulled out the scroll with the kings scrawl on the bottom with the order of banishment.
Percy entered Eomer's room to find him packing a travel pack, "Eomer, I'm coming with you." Said Percy, clapping a hand on the shoulders of his friend, Eomer shook his head, "No Percy I need you here to protect the king, the prince and Eowyn, and with you here I know they will be safe." The Captain of the Rohirrim shouldered his bag clapped a hand on Percy's shoulder and with a whispered "Do me proud" walked out and took all hope for Rohan with him. It was then Percy got mad, madder than he had been in his entire life. His home for the last two years was falling apart and because of his oath to the king he couldn't lift a finger to stop it.
It had been three days since Eomer's banishment; Percy was helping adding oil to torches of the guards when he heard a shriek, a shriek from Eowyn, Percy immediately ran to where the voice had come from and found the beautiful blonde crying over Theodred with Grima standing over her. Percy took one step, grabbed Grima and threw him out of the room after a snide remark. Eowyn had fled the hall and stood outside, Percy soon joined her. They both watched as one of the banners ripped and blew away with the wind. Hope had truly abandoned them.
But as the banner moved across a crest of a hill three horses were revealed, one Percy knew well. Shadowfax was a horse amongst horses and was one that knew exactly who Percy was and where he came from, as did the horses rider, Gandalf, Percy smiled for the first time in a long time. It seemed hope had returned and the "grey" wizard brought it with him.
