All right, I know it's short, but I hope you like it:) So I decided to make more new chapters than I thought I would. It would be boring if I posted the same ones.
Vampirereader99: I'm so sorry for pushing a reset button on it. But I decided on how James will be in the renewed version:) I don't want to reveal too much, but he will be in Merciful Eyes very early:) Again, I'm so sorry for delaying it.
Please enjoy and review:)
7:15 A. M.
Early morning had finally arrived.
With most of the after hours staff heading home after a long night of monitoring and checking their most critical patients, the new staff came and took their place with the utmost pride. Some carried clipboards as they entered into patients rooms for news of their health while others were talking amongst their co-workers, sipping coffee and talking of memories past.
Takashi's assigned nurse, a young woman around her mid 20's, dark auburn hair that she had tied into a bun and hazel eyes, carries a tray with breakfast that she took from the cafeteria; A tall glass of milk for strong bones, cold cereal and two dark brown toasted, buttered bread. And along side it: Two small, blue tablet for pain relief. Despite Takashi not having complained of any kind of aliment, it was better safe than sorry not to have them just in case.
As she reaches Takashi's assigned room, she balances the tray with in her left hand and she grabs hold of the door handle and turns it with the right.
"Good morning, Takashi." she greets in a voice that radiated a very positive attitude. "How are feel-"
To her shock, she sees that the medical bed was vacant; there was no sign of him anywhere in the room. The only thing that was left in his room was a messy bed and the window left wide open, allowing the wind from outside to dance with the curtains. Eyes wide, she unintentionally loses grip of the tray, ignoring the crash of the contents as she speed walks from the room.
Seeing the nearest man in a lab coat, she agitatedly grabs onto his shoulder and pulls him towards her.
"Excuse me, have you seen a little boy with black hair!?" she exclaims. "He was assigned in Room 304, but he wasn't there!"
The male doctor looks at her with the most nonchalant look possible, despite the current situation. "Oh, you mean Takashi? He asked to use the restroom. He should be..." He turns around and points towards a light-colored wooden door with a sign that read, "Restroom" above it that was in the very end of the hallway. "... in there." he finishes.
She places the palm of her chest as she sighs. "Thank goodness. Thank you."
Without a second thought, she walked calmly towards the door and knocked lightly. "Takashi? Sweetheart, are you in there?" She paused for a few seconds for a response, but none never came.
"Takashi...?"
Worried, she quickly opens the door. Hoping for relief, her heart quickly sank upon seeing the bathroom was just as empty. She bites down on her fingernails as she backs away from the door, her concern filled to the brim. She snapped out of her state when she suddenly heard numerous worried murmurs just rush past from behind her. She turns and saw a myriad of people in the hallways, appearing to be in a frantic frenzy. She took a good look on their faces, and saw expressions similar to hers at the moment.
"Huh? What's going on?"
"You there!" A voice of a young woman exclaims. The auburn haired nurse twists in direction of the voice, finding that it belonged to a woman in scrubs, with dirty blond hair and blue eyes. This woman rushes up to her, her face appeared as if she saw a ghost.
"Yes, what is it?" she asks.
The woman then says frantically. "You're looking for a little boy with black hair, right? I found him."
"You have!? Where!?"
The unknown woman takes a hold of her hand and speeds walks with her. "Come with me; it's best to show you." The blonde leads her to the stairwell. The two felt a shiver down their spines from the sudden cold air that hit them as they climbed the stone stairs.
"Wait, where is he!?" the auburn exclaims. As they continue to climb the stairs, the blonde turns her head and locks her blue orbs with the auburn's hazel orbs.
"Just hurry...!"
The red-head, as they reach the final set of stairs, began to piece the puzzle together. The fact that she - alone - is being brought to the roof caused her stomach to twist in distress.
The blonde opens the door to the roof, and what the red-head saw made her mind freeze and her insides twist. Takashi, wearing a pair of scrubs and a medical eye patch over his bruised eye, was standing on the ledge of the building, just staring at nothing in particular and not even appearing to be in fear as if this was casual for him.
He was... smiling?
With the orange glow of the rising sun, his hair and clothes waving in the wind and his innocent face, he appeared almost like an angelic being. But of course, that wasn't on the nurses mind.
With the shriek that sounds from both of the nurses, Takashi turns and faces them. And the moment he saw their worried looks, he sheepishly steps down from the ledge and rushes to them. The auburn woman kneels to his height and grasps both his shoulders.
"Takashi, what do you think you're doing!? Do you how dangerous that was!? You could have been killed!" she exclaims. But when he shudders from her angered voice, she looses her grip on his shoulders and her face softens.
"I-I-I'm s-s-s-sorry." Takashi stammers as tears began to well up in his eyes. "I d-didn't mean t-t-to worry y-you. I-I just wanted to be o-outside. I-I was-"
Before he could utter another broken up word, the nurse embraces him in a gentle, warm hug. She couldn't - or didn't - want to hear another word from him. Seeing the boy's reaction of fear from a firm scolding began to tug on her heartstrings as she saw how affected he was still by his trauma. Though Takashi couldn't remember, whatever caused this fear in him... they left it in a very deep scar in his mind.
The auburn woman gently pats his back to reassure him that she wasn't angry, but was only concerned. "It's all right, sweetheart. You just had me for a scare." She releases him from her hug and locks eyes with him while she keeps her hands on his shoulders. "But please, the next time you wish to go outside, ask me or the other staff members. Okay?"
When her words hit home, Takashi allowed a small smile to grace his face. The red-head smiles back, relieved to see that the boy wasn't going to build walls around himself. She stands, turning and giving the blonde nurse a thankful bow.
"Thank you so much. I own you one."
The blonde waves her hand dismissively. "Nah, it's fine. I think he learned his lesson, right?" As she says her final words, she leans down towards Takashi, giving him a firm, but carefree expression. Takashi sheepishly grabs onto the auburn woman's leg, hiding a portion of his face behind said limb and then nodding.
"Good... but anyways," She continues as she straightens herself up and directs her attention to the red-head. "You're probably going to have some explaining to do. Some people ran in, freaking out because they saw him on the ledge from outside.
The red-head lets out an exhausted sigh, brushing aside her fringed bangs from her sweat covered forehead. "Yeah, you're right." She exhales another sigh, muttering the word "shit" under her breath. Catching it, just barely, Takashi looks innocently up at her.
"Nurse-san, what was that word you just said?"
The auburn haired woman stares down at the boy with flushed cheeks. "O-Oh! It's nothing, sweetheart. I was thinking out loud." she stammers as she lightly pats the boy on the head.
"O-Oh..."
She then kneels and picks Takashi's small form up. Holding him, she was surprised on how light he was, almost like a doll.
"All right, let's go back inside." The red-head smiles. Takashi gives a unnoticeable nod as he hugs around the woman's neck. As they descended the stairs, Takashi lazily lays his head on the crock of the woman's neck. Oddly, the smell of the woman's flowery perfume relaxed his mind. He couldn't put his finger on it, but it was a smell that he recalled.
No matter how hard or how much he tried, it was like looking through a fogged window; his past memories were a blur... but more accurately, it was more like looking at a photo that blacken from exposure to light.
Yet, it was a simple scent that became attached to him.
His mind may not remember, but his body and his senses held onto them.
Back into the interior of the hospital, the red-head notice Takashi's slower breathing. She looks out of the corner of her eye and sees the calmed expression on the boy's sleeping face. She softly chuckles and a gentle smile follows as she brushes aside his bangs. As they head towards the boy's assigned room, the frantic group calmed and dispatched from the halls and returned to their duties.
The auburn woman sweat-drops as she approaches his room, staring down at the mess that she had left on the floor that sat in the doorway. She steps over it gingerly, careful not to awaken Takashi, and lays him across his bed. She gently holds the back of his head as she laid him against the pillow.
Pulling the covers over him, Takashi moaned lightly. He gently rubs his good eye, followed by a yawn as he wakes up.
"Oh, I'm sorry, dear. Did I wake you up?" the nurse asks softly.
Takashi shook his head. "No," He yawns once more. "I was just alittle sleepy, not tired." Takashi scans the room in a counter clockwise move of his head, causing the red-head to raise an eyebrow along with a smirk.
"What's the matter?" she asks.
Takashi pulls his arms out of the covers and lays them on each of his sides before he says. "Where is the other Nurse-san at? I wanted to apologize for worrying her."
The red-head saw how worried himself was in his eyes. She smooths his charcoal hair and says kindly. "Please, don't worry yourself, dear. You need to rest and if you want, I can pass the message."
A small smile graces his face. "Really...? Because I don't want to-"
"You're not troubling me, young man." she interrupts. "I want to worry about you. And I have no problem with it. Okay?"
Takashi reluctantly nods. "... T-Thank you. And I'm sorry for worrying you too."
"I forgive you, but I must ask: If you wanted to go outside, why did you go to the roof?"
Takashi gently closes his eye, his eyelid become heavy. But he replies tiredly. "I... I don't know. For some reason, I felt... nostalgic when I thought of being in a high place. I don't know how to explain it, but it was like... I was free. I felt happy."
The nurse was confused, but tried her best to be understanding. She cocks her head with a concerned look on her face as he continues. "I know that sounds weird, but I had this feeling like... I needed to be outside to feel the breeze. And I had this sense like it was going to be my last."
His face wan, he halfway opens his eyes and locks eye contact with her hazel orbs. "Is Kaien-sama coming soon, Nurse-san?"
She smiles warmly with her kind gaze and says. "Well, he has a school to run. I'm sure he's busy. But I know he'll make time to see you."
Takashi's smile returns. He shuts his eye and turns on his side, tucking his arms backing into the warmth that was trapped in the blankets. "I hope he will. I didn't... want... it to be the last time... I see-" Before he could finish, he succumbs to his fatigue. Hearing his soft breathing, the red-head sighs in relief and smiles.
Tucking the covers, she plants a kiss onto his forehead. "Sleep tight."
Once again, she steps over her mess as she leaves the room. She is greeted by the blonde nurse who was waiting with her back leaned against the wall and her arms resting in her lap. The blonde could see that in her face, something was troubling her.
The red-head turns to her. "Did you hear all he said?"
The blonde nods. "I did; even if he can't remember who he was, his body seems to."
The red-head clasps her hand to her chest and stares down at the floor, her worry revealed in her eyes. "You're right, but just what he was saying... Something just really bothers me; I can't put my finger on it."
The blonde pushes herself up from the wall and says. "Want to try looking through past medical records? Maybe we can find something to identify him."
The auburn woman nods. "Good idea. It wouldn't hurt to look, and we might find out anything about kin."
As the red-head tries to leave, she's stopped by the blonde's hand. "But before we do... you should probably clean that up." she says, pointing a finger down on the mess. The red-head sweat-drops and slouches in despair.
