Expect the Unexpected

Chapter 2

Hermione woke up the next morning feeling strange. She didn't know what it was until she realized it was that empty feeling again. A part of her was missing and she needed to find it before she went insane. She got ready for the day, dressed in her school uniform, and clipped the monitor for Luna's magic onto the inside band of her uniform skirt. It was fairly small and easily concealed so she didn't have to worry about it. It would vibrate if Luna needed her. She went down to the common room and noticed that, the wonderful scent she smelled in the library yesterday, lingered on the armchair across from where Blaise and Ginny were sitting. She remembered Draco sitting there and made an urgent note to herself to ask him if he had gotten a new cologne or something, it smelled delicious. With the amazing scent and her thoughts running through her head she headed down to breakfast. She sat distractedly next to Harry and stared at her breakfast not eating a thing.

"Are you ok Hermione?" Harry asked looking at her untouched eggs and toast.

"Hmmmm? Oh I'm fine Harry just a bit distracted." She glanced up from her plate and looked around the great hall. The scent found her nose again and she saw Draco sitting and smiling at the Slytherin table. He motioned with a hand for her to follow him out into the hallway.

Hermione, feeling possessed almost, left the table muttering a comment about going to the library. She walked down the hall looking for the blonde when she was suddenly pulled into an alcove. She made to scream but she was cut off when someone's hand covered her mouth. She took a deep breath through the nose and sighed. 'Draco' she thought. She didn't know how but she knew there was something going on between them and his magnificent scent had everything to do with it. She pulled his hand from her face and turned to look at him. "Out with it Draco. What's going on that you're not telling me but everyone else seems to know about?" She huffed, not actually angry but still a bit put out. She hated not being in on things.

He inhaled and began to speak, "I presume you know what a Veela is?"

She nodded and he continued. "Well, it would seem that my father is half Veela and my mother is a quarter Veela making me three quarters Veela. And, well, it kinda sorta seems that you're my...mate."

She stared at him for a moment in shock and then she started to hyperventilate. She sat on the ground and put her head between her knees, clutching her hair for dear life.

"Are you okay Hermione? I know it's a lot to take in and I probably could have done that better but, it is what it is and now it's out in the open. So how do you feel about it?"

How could this be happening to her? She knew there was something going on with Dra-Malfoy but she didn't expect something of this magnitude. Of course all the signs were there. The way he got along with her in the library, when he looked relieved when she came into the common room that night, the way he looked at her in the Great Hall, His heavenly smell. "Oh!" Hermione said, her brain finally catching up with her thoughts, shocked at how she could have been so blind. "I'm not really sure what to feel at this moment." She said honestly. "I won't reject you just so you know but I can't promise that this will work."

He sighed in acceptance of her feelings. "I just want a chance to prove that I can be everything for you. I want you to be happy no matter what as long as you're with me." He said gently as he smiled at her reassuringly and she gave a small smile in return.

"So does this mean we're dating?" Draco asked hopefully.

"How about we use this as a trial run? We start as friends and then at the end of the week you can ask me to be your girlfriend."

"We have a deal." He grabbed her hand and helped her to stand up. "So meet me in the room of requirement after classes end?" He asked, nervous for the first time about her answer.

She thought about it for a moment. "Okay, see you then Mal-Draco." She smiled and left the alcove, quickly walking to her first class. 'What a way to start the morning.' She thought as she entered potions and sat down next to Harry and Ron.

"Hey Hermione!" They greeted her.

"So what was wrong earlier Mione?" Harry asked. "Does it have something to do with Draco?"

"Well, yes but I don't see how you could have guessed that so, before I get mad at you for knowing before me, he told me the truth."

"About?" Harry prompted.

"His...condition and my part in it."

"Sorry Mione." Ron said. "He told us we couldn't tell you, that he would when he was ready."

Hermione sighed. "It's okay Ron I understand. I'll just have to be mad at him later." She smiled to let them know she was joking.

Professor Snape glided into the room and told them to turn to the amortentia potion in their text books and read the instructions carefully. "We will be making this difficult and highly dangerous potion, if not brewed properly, next week. I expect you all to gather the following missing ingredients before then. Veela tears, sprig of lavender, honey, doxy eggs, and snake fangs. You can find all these in the apothecary in Hogsmeade you will have time over the weekend to go there."

Hermione made a list using exact measurements so she would know to get double what the potion called for in case she lost some.

They spent the rest of the hour discussing the qualities of the ingredients and what other potions they were used for. When Hermione got out of her last class she told the boys she would see them later and went to the room of requirement.

She checked the monitor on her skirt to make sure Luna was fine and upon seeing that she was, went into the room thinking I need to see Draco. She looked around at the comfy room that looked like the common rooms but instead of house colors it was purple and black. There was a fireplace with a couch and two armchairs in front of it. She spied Draco on the couch and went to sit next to him. Why make things more complicated than they needed to be by shying away? "Hey." She said timidly.

"Hey, how are you?" He smiled as she sat next to him, and closed her eyes whilst letting a deep sigh out.

"Alright I guess, I'm just kinda stressed right now." Between constantly checking on Luna and finding out she was Draco's mate, she was beginning to wonder just how long it would take until she snapped from overthinking everything that was turning her life upside down.

Draco got up and stood behind her and began to massage her shoulders. At first she tensed up even more at his touch but slowly began to relax. 'His hands are magic!' She thought to herself.

"Why don't you tell me what's troubling you, you never know, I may be able to help?" He said while working the knots out on her shoulders.

"It's just I don't really know how to feel about all this, and my life is being turned upside down so fast." She continued on about all the things that were stressing her out, leaving out the details of what she was doing for Luna of course.

It felt good to tell someone about her problems and anxieties. After she got everything off her chest she melted under Draco's hands. He worked his way down her back and then back up and by the time he reached her lower back again she had fallen asleep.

Draco smiled at his lovely mate and carried her in his arms to a bedroom the room of requirement had provided. He laid her down in the bed and took off her shoes and robe, leaving her in her white shirt and grey skirt. He tucked her in then laid down on top of the covers conjuring a blanket for himself. He didn't think she was comfortable enough with their situation to completely share a bed with him so he did the next best thing. He fell asleep with his mate next to him, both of them comfortable and happy.
