Valentine's Day rolled around, and sure enough the next day a new death report came in. Edward was immediately called to see Dr. Quinzel. He knew another death had occurred, not just by the day it was, but by how two guards were escorting him as if he'd run away on them if they didn't.
When he entered Dr. Quinzel's office, he noticed a few police officers sitting near her desk. "Hello, Edward. Come sit." She looked at him softly.
Edward walked into her office looking at the officers. He was fairly certain he recognized one of them from when he was captured, but he could have been mistaken. "This is Officer Perry and Officer Brant." Dr. Quinzel informed him. "They're here to ask you some questions about what you were telling me the other day about the Holiday Murders."
Edward sat down in the usual chair he sat in during sessions of therapy. "Are you sure he isn't just a crazy loon?" Perry asked, crossing his large arms across his chest as he leaned his back against the wall.
Dr. Quinzel shot him a bit of a look. "Edward is one of the most successful patients thus far. He's done a complete turnaround since he arrived here. Please be more respectful to my patient."
"Yes Officer, respect will get you places." Edward said in an arrogant tone, crossing one leg over the other.
Perry shot him a swift glare. "I seem to remember you on the day we caught you at the airport. Respect was the farthest thing from your mind when you were calling all of us morons."
Edward smirked a little with amusement. "Well I certainly couldn't call you 'pigs' now could I? Pigs are intelligent."
Officer Brant smacked his hand on the desk before Edward, catching his attention immediately. "Listen here you freak, we ain't got time for your bullshit."
"Edward, please just tell them what you told me." Dr. Quinzel stated curtly, clearly frustrated with both the cops and Edward by this point.
Edward decided to hold his tongue as far as further insults went, which he took as a huge improvement considering how confrontational he could be when he was off his medication. "Very well." He looked at both officers. "The Holiday Killer's first victim was killed on New Year's Day, but his birthday was Groundhog's Day. The second victim was killed on Groundhog's Day, but his birthday would have been today, Valentine's Day."
The officers looked at one another briefly as Edward continued. "I bet my freedom that you boys are here because another victim was found dead. Let me guess, they had a birthday coming up on St. Patrick's Day." He looked at them smugly.
"Alright smart guy... who are you working with?" Officer Perry asked with accusation his eyes.
Edward narrowed his own eyes. "You really think I'm working for someone just because I've got this much figured out? Imbeciles..." He looked to Dr. Quinzel for support.
"If you don't mind me interjecting, the whole time Edward's been here, he's had no visitors and no mail. He's been living without any connection to the outside world aside from what he's seen on the Gotham News Network. He's telling the truth, he has nothing to do with this Holiday Killer, he just knows his patterns it seems." She informed them as calmly as possible.
The two cops mulled it over for a moment. "Alright, I have to ask: Who do you think it is?"
"Well I can't pinpoint it just yet, but I do have some ideas in general of how to figure it out." Edward informed them calmly.
"Great, so does half of the force..." Perry rolled his eyes.
Edward ignored this for Dr. Quinzel's sake and locked his fingers together, sitting calmly. "Whoever is the killer either one: has direct access to the archives to search out birthdays; two: has a friend in the archives high enough in rank to get private access, or three: this man has enough money to pay out for access."
"That sounds like a start." Dr. Quinzel looked up at them.
The officers both nodded quickly. "Alright, we'll report back to the station. If the genius here comes up with anything else, contact us. Thank you for your time." Perry told them, not looking at him as they headed out.
Edward noted their lack of appreciation but didn't make a fuss, nor did he mention it. Dr. Quinzel looked at him with a happy smile. "Thank you, Edward. I know they didn't seem to care for you, but I know you're doing a really good thing here. If all goes well, this might help you in the future."
"You mean shorten my stay here?" He looked at her quizzically.
Dr. Quinzel nodded. "Yes, significantly."
"I can't argue with that. Perhaps they'll actually catch the bastard behind it this time." He looked at her noting how much she seemed to enjoy wearing the colour red.
She smiled. "You've come a long way, Edward. I'm really quite pleased with the turn around."
"As am I. My skills are much more useful now." He decided, glancing up at her blue eyes.
"Edward, you have the deductive skills of a detective. Why didn't you do that, instead of being a criminal?" She asked curiously.
Edward smiled a little. "I didn't become a criminal. I was falsely accused. They don't even have proper crime scenes or dead bodies to prove anything."
Dr. Quinzel sighed with annoyance. "This again Edward? Everyone knows what you did, Eliza Davenport's testimony alone was enough proof."
"Miss Davenport must have had one hell of a nightmare, because in all reality, there isn't even a shred of proof as to what really happened. Innocent until proven guilty doctor." Edward carried on with his facade.
"Of course, you're afraid by admitting to your crime's to me you'll be tried again and proven guilty this time. Very well, we won't talk about it." Dr. Quinzel decided. "Still, it doesn't account for all the money they found in your possession."
"I had good pay at Wayne Tec Labs, and I got very lucky with the gambling. Currency explained." He looked at her smugly.
"You can lie to me, and you can lie to the people of Gotham but there are two people in this world you can't lie to: yourself, and Eliza Davenport." She looked at him pointedly.
Edward smiled thinly. "Those are lovely earrings you're wearing. A present from your father?" He changed the subject.
Harley felt her square cut ruby earrings. "My boyfriend." She said quickly.
"Ah, what a very lucky man landing a smart beautiful woman such as yourself." He flirted rather directly.
"Edward." She looked at him sharply over her glasses.
Edward raised his hands with an amused smile. "I mean no harm. I'm simply complimenting my wonderful doctor."
"That's a bit inappropriate in context, and you know it." She said as she set his file in its proper drawer, indicating they were done talking for the day.
Edward stood up taking the hint. "Have a good day Dr. Quinzel." He smiled before exiting her office.
