Chapter 9
"Miss Donaldson, age twenty two, was stabbed to death, that much we know. They found her in her very own kitchen correct?" Edward asked as he looked down at her crime scene photo, where multiple gory stab wounds gaped open.
Commissioner Gordon nodded sitting closely, but at enough distance to feel comfortable. "Yes, Miss Donaldson's knives were all inspected and tested, but none of them matched any of her stab wounds. The killer used his own weapon for the job."
Edward nodded and put it aside before pulling up a crime scene photo of the second victim. "Mr. McMasters' death wasn't said in any detail on the news, but I think I can see why..." Edward stated calmly, noticing his head was cut half off and stabbed in the forehead. "This man isn't a professional killer, but he is enjoying what he does."
"That much we've noted." Gordon nodded.
Dr. Quinzel remained quiet watching them look through the folder together. "Do the stab wounds match up to the same weapon?" Edward asked looking at Commissioner Gordon.
"They do, but the knife isn't a typical hunting knife one would find on almost any Gotham citizen. The knife is a switchblade, and one you can't buy in regular stores. Someone obtained this weapon illegally." Gordon explained.
"Interesting he'd attempt to saw off a head with it then..." Edward looked at Mr. Newbury's photo noting his head half caved in. "The killer didn't use a knife for this man, but instead he beat his head in... how curious."
"We suspect he was testing his abilities, which gives us a good guess the killer is a younger male no older than twenty eight." Gordon informed him.
"That's an appropriate guess Gordon." Edward looked up at him. "There are more pieces of evidence you're withholding I sense. I noticed no other shots of the entire crime scene, just the bodies."
Commissioner Gordon looked a bit surprised he noticed. "You need to see the rest of the photos?"
"They'd be helpful to solving this case. That is, if you even want my help." Edward commented.
"At this point we need all the help we can get on this case before he kills again." Gordon said rather honestly.
"If you can get me all the photos, I can be more help to you. For now I just have some questions." Edward closed the file.
"Sure." Gordon nodded allowing him to ask.
"Has anyone visited the archives to see who's going to be the next potential victim?" Edward asked.
"That was one of the first things we did. Two people share a birthday on St. Patrick's day. We've put them in protective custody, but we hope to catch this guy before the day comes to pass." Commissioner Gordon informed him.
"With my help, it may very well be so." Edward said smugly, speaking highly of himself once again.
Commissioner Gordon grabbed up the folder, "I'll return tomorrow afternoon with the rest of the evidence."
"I have another question for you." Edward turned to look at him, "Did anyone check out the people who work in the archives? Was anyone questioned?"
Gordon looked at him for a moment. "We questioned the entire staff at the archives after speaking to you last time. They typically keep a log of people who come in to look through, and they normally write down what the person was looking up. That information wasn't present when we went looking for it. Mr. Jordan Elliot informed us he'd recover the information the following day. When we did a follow-up meeting we learned Elliot had committed suicide that previous night, and no records of visitors were found."
Edward cupped his chin thoughtfully, "This information is very helpful... I look forward to seeing you tomorrow."
The commissioner nodded to him. "Thanks again Edward." He looked to Dr. Quinzel. "I'll be back tomorrow at the same time."
"See you then." She smiled, watching him leave. "Edward, you really seem to have a knack for detective work."
"I find it child's play. With all the pieces of the puzzle laid out before me it becomes an exciting challenge to solve. I'm very close, and I can feel it." Edward looked up at her.
Dr. Quinzel nodded. "You're very talented, Edward." She smiled a bit.
"I'm just doing what I do best, solving puzzles." Edward smiled as he stood. "Now if you'll excuse me, I have some theories to catch up on."
Dr. Quinzel leaned back against her desk, holding his file in her hands. "Of course. Have a good day Edward."
With that Edward headed back to his cell. His mind was racing with possibilities as he picked up his book once again. He was good at detective work; it was highly plausible he'd be the one to catch the killer. With any luck he'd be out of that asylum within months.
Edward knew he had to keep his nose clean once he was out. He couldn't risk getting caught for any crimes, or he was likely to go away for years at a time. Edward planned to turn his life around. He had enough money stowed away he could open his own detective business, and likely he'd be successful enough in doing that.
Things were looking up for Edward. Smirking a bit he felt like the cat who caught the canary. He would get away with his past crimes unpunished; he would be the greatest murderer there ever was, and no one would be able to stop him from enjoying the rest of his days. No one.
