Epilogue

"Why are you so nervous?" Sophia laughed at her boyfriend who was pacing back and forth. The young woman continued to laugh as she stood firmly in front of the mirror and continued to apply her makeup.

The man stopped dead in his tracks and quizzically looked at his girlfriend. "Because Sophia. It's not every day that a guy has to meet his girlfriend's parents for the first time." He sighed deeply. "…And you have three!"

"Just relax. Everything will be fine." Sophia nonchalantly said as she continued to put on her lipstick. "Besides you already met my dad and he is the one that you should have been most nervous about." Sophia finally stopped what she was doing and walked over to her boyfriend and offered him a warm smile as she wrapped her arms around his waist. "Ryan, they will love you."

"I hope you're right." Ryan smiled back. "Now, hurry up! We are going to be late!"

"They're late." Arizona annoyingly said as she looked at her watch and then took a sip of water. The older couple had arrived at the steakhouse 20 minutes ago and were immediately welcomed with a warm greeting and delivered to their reserved seating.

"Arizona, be nice!" Callie scoffed. Tonight was a big deal for Callie. For one, she was getting a long overdue chance to see her daughter and for two, she was getting to meet the famous Ryan for the first time. Over the years Callie had grown accustomed to her daughter living completely across the country. Sure it didn't mean that she ever stopped missing her, but she found solace knowing her daughter was achieving her dreams. First, there was Harvard undergraduate and then Stanford for medical school. Next, there was John Hopkins for her surgical internship and residency. Now, Sophia was the Chief Resident at Hopkins and currently vying for the Pediatrics Fellowship of her choice. As much as she Callie wanted her daughter to be successful, she also wanted her to find love and be happy. It wasn't often that Sophia talked about dating anyone, much less brought someone home for them to meet. Callie knew right away that this Ryan must be a pretty special guy. "You know we arrived early…" Callie laughed. "At your insistence!"

Arizona tried to stifle her laughter. "I'm just saying…it's the first time he is coming home with our daughter…the least he could do it to make sure he is on time." In the last 15 years, Sophia had grown to be much more than just Callie's daughter. More than just a step daughter, even. She may not have been there to witness Sophia's first steps or to take her to her first day of kindergarten but she still considered Sophia her own in every sense. Just thinking about Sophia following in her footsteps and entering into a Pediatrics Fellowship made her swell with pride. Tonight Arizona, was trying to keep her cool. She knew that she needed to be the calm one. It was obvious that Callie was over the moon about meeting this new Ryan guy so that meant that Arizona had to be the objective one. If that meant being stern then albeit.

"Oh my gosh! There they are!" Callie squealed as she ecstatically nudged her wife's leg under the table. "Oh look at him! He is cute!" She whispered to Arizona before standing up to engulf her daughter in a tight hug.

"Momma, it's so good to see you!" Sophia said as she returned the hug and matched the tight hold that her mother had on her. The now 31 year old Sophia scrunched up her nose just as she didn't when she was a kid when her mother peppered kisses all over her face. "Mom…Mom, That's enough!" She faked annoyance in her voice.

"I can't help it Mija, I've missed you so much." Callie laughed.

Once Callie finally let go of the grasp she had on her daughter, Sophia turned to Arizona who was patiently waiting for her turn for hugs and kisses. "MaZona…" Sophia affectionately whispered the nickname she gave her second mother so many years ago before she leapt into a long awaited hug.

Arizona hugged her daughter tight. "Soph, are you eating?" the now graying blonde asked as she felt the younger woman's ribs. "You feel like you've lost weight. Are you eating enough?"

"Ma, I'm fine…I'm eating just fine." Sophia reassured before turning towards the man that looked on in admiration. "MaZona…Mom…I'd like for you both to meet Ryan. Ryan, these are my mom's, Callie Torres and Arizona Robbins."

"It's a pleasure to meet you both." Ryan nervously said as he extended his hand for a handshake. "Arizona…" he said as he shook the blonde's hand, as soon as he said her first name he immediately regretted it.

Arizona returned the gesture with a firm handshake but wasted no time correcting the man. "Dr. Robbins."

"How rude of me… Dr. Robbins." Ryan repeated before he turned to shake hands with the older Latina. "Dr. Torres, pleased to meet you."

"Oh…we are not that formal! It's a pleasure to meet you too, Ryan." Callie said as she pulled him in for a hug.

After the formal greetings the group took their seats and placed their order with the waiter. It didn't take long at all before the parents started to play Twenty Questions.

"Soph, What brings you to Seattle?" Callie questioned. No matter the reason it was great to see her daughter but with her busy schedule as a resident normally they were the ones that would have to travel across the country for a long overdue visit.

"Well…I thought it was finally time for you guys to meet Ryan." Sophia gushed as she looked towards the man that sat beside her. "And I wanted to have a weekend at home with you guys before I start my peds fellowship and begin the search for a new place to live."

"So does that mean that you've finally decided which fellowship you are going to choose?" Arizona questioned. She knew that her daughter definitely had options, but Hopkins seemed like the likely choice being how she had spent the last five years there as a resident.

"Umm…yeah, I think I have." Sophia answered. She quickly tried to gauge the look on her parent's faces before she answered. "Well, I considered staying at Hopkins…but I really wanted to come back home to the west coast. And with the two of you retiring last year, I was thinking that everyone won't consider me such a shoe in for Seattle Grace."

"Seattle Grace?" Arizona and Callie said in unison.

"Yeah, Moms, I met with Dr. Parker this morning. I'm joining the peds fellowship here in Seattle." Sophia ecstatically nodded with a big smile. "I know it won't be the same as when you were the chief, MaZona but I start in two weeks."

Callie was so shocked beyond belief that she leapt out of her seat and pulled her daughter into a big hug. "That is great news!" Arizona chimed in and hugged Sofia once her wife finally let go.

Once seated again, Callie noticed the smiling man that was admiring her daughter. "Ryan…tell us more about you. Where are you from?" So far the evening had been filled with the three ladies catching up that she had almost forgotten that he was there.

"Baltimore." The man choked whilst trying to quickly answer and swallow the mouthful of water he had just drank. "Actually, I was born in southern Virginia but my family moved to Baltimore when I was very young so I've always considered it home." He added once he was able to speak coherently again.

"And what do you do for a living?" Callie asked, ignoring the brown eyes that were darting at her from across the table. "What?" She asked Sophia defensively.

"Mom, you don't have to interrogate him." Sophia joked.

"No it's okay." Ryan grabbed his girlfriend's hand to offer a small sign that he was okay. "I'm a Sr. Associate Attorney at Posner, Parker, & Harris Law Firm in Baltimore."

"An attorney, huh?" Arizona asked not hiding her sardonic tone. "Which school did you go to?"

"Columbia Law." Ryan simply answered, clearly feeling the tension between himself and the older blonde across from him.

"Columbia, huh?" Callie repeated. She was certainly fascinated with his credentials. "What an impressive school."

"MaZona, Ryan received his undergraduate degree from Harvard as well." Sophia pointed out in hopes to impress her second mom.

"Certainly impressive schooling under his belt…" Arizona agreed. "But you know, dating a surgeon in the midst of a pediatrics fellowship can be pretty taxing. Not to mention a long distance relationship. Are you sure that you are up for that?" She had barely finished her sentence when she felt a kick under the table from her wife who was sitting beside her.

"MaZona!" Sophia yelled in shock.

"What?" Arizona asked defensively. "They are valid questions…"

"Arizona, that's not for us to…." Callie started but was cut off.

"No…No…She's completely right." Ryan chuckled nervously. All along he thought that Callie Torres would be the parent that he would have to work hard to impress. Sophia definitely looked exactly like her biological mother and he couldn't help but wonder if she also inherited her fiery personality from her as well. Unfortunately, he couldn't have been more off with his assumption. Prior to tonight he had always heard only good things about Sophia's second mother. As far as he could tell Dr. Arizona Robbins was a perky, happy go lucky pediatric surgeon. He quickly found out that that was no always the case and he would have to work harder to impress her. "Like Sophia, I grew up with two surgeons for parents. Especially when your mother was Chief of Surgery, you know all too well how taxing a busy surgeon's schedule can be…but I'm willing for work hard for the things that I love." He looked the younger brunette in the eye's and offered a warm smile.

"Ryan, what's your last name?" Arizona curiously asked.

"Barclay." The man simply answered.

"Barclay? As in Elaine Barclay?" Arizona asked, her interest finally starting to flicker with new discovery of the young man that sat across from her.

"Yes, Ma'am…that's my mother." Ryan responded.

"You've got to be kidding! I did my residency with Elaine…I heard that she had stayed in Baltimore." Arizona smiled, thinking back to the memories of Elaine and herself as interns' right out of medical school. "If it wasn't for her I probably wouldn't have made it through our first year. How is she?"

"She passed away last fall." Ryan sadly said. "Breast cancer."

The blonde doctor immediately felt a surge of guilt upon hearing the news. Why didn't she at least give him a chance before she started being so impolite to him? "I'm very sorry to hear that, Ryan. Your mother was certainly an amazing woman."

"Indeed, she was." Ryan agreed. His mother was without a doubt the most important person in his life. He definitely inherited his courage from her and that was something that he needed right now. He reached for Sofia's hand and took a big sigh before looking directly at the two women that sat across the table from him. "You know, Dr. Torres….Dr. Robbins, last year when my mother died I don't know how I could have made it through that if I didn't have Sofia there by my side. I don't know what on Earth I did to be so lucky to find her but somehow I did. For the last year she has made me the happiest man alive and I'd like to spend the rest of my life trying to make your daughter even half as happy as she has made me." The man nervously reached in his pocket and pulled out the ring box that he had been hiding for the last two months. "I'd like to have your permission to have Sofia's hand in marriage."

Callie discarded the keys on the side table that sat next to their front door as they both entered their apartment. It had been almost three months since they both decided to retire and spend more time together, likely travelling, but neither of them could imagine living anywhere else but across the street from the hospital. "Well…?" Callie asked as she watched her wife walk into the kitchen and begin to pour herself a glass of water. "What did you think of Ryan?"

"He's alright…" Arizona nonchalantly said.

"Just alright?" Callie giggled as she walked over and wrapped her arms around the blonde's waist from behind.

"Okay…maybe a little better than alright." Arizona smiled and she turned to face her wife and pull her in close. "I mean, he is willing to move all the way across the country to be with her. And I guess he seems like he is absolutely in love with her."

"You're incorrigible, giving him such a hard time like that." Callie laughed, unable to hide the huge smile that was plastered across her face. "But we have to look at the big picture…Our daughter is getting married."

Breaking every little bit of the tough exterior she had left, Arizona grabbed her wife's hand and pulled it towards her to plant a gentle kiss on her palm. "Our daughter is getting married!"
