Chapter 4: Little People don't test well

As Grantire stumbled towards the black van where he was being directed, three thoughts were going through his mind. Where are we going? Does Marius have an actual girlfriend? How did they get a latex glove in that one burrito?

All those thoughts vanished when he saw the girl sitting in the back seat. She had long brown hair tied in a braid and was fidgeting with her coffee-colored skirt nervously. Grantire elbowed Jehan, who was standing right beside him.

"Dibs."

Grantire climbed into the van and slid next to the girl. "Heelllloooo!"

The girl looked at him nervously. "Oh, hello."

Grantire grinned at her. "So... you got dragged into this too?"

The girl nodded. "Literally. This skirt used to be navy."

Grantire blinked. "Right... Listen, kid, what's your name?"

"Cosette!" someone yelled.

The girl's head popped up as Marius almost literally flew towards the van. The girl squealed as Marius dove into her arms.

"You're here!"

"You're here!"

Grantire's jaw dropped. "You're here?"

When the rest of the Amis had piled into the van, the man got in too. He turned to the red-haired woman in the driver's seat. "Can we go now?"

The lady rolled her eyes. "One more stop, Clint."

Two hours earlier:

Gavroche woke up on a bed. This was surprising for a number of reasons. Number one, he hadn't slept on an actual bed since he was about three. Number two, he had gone to sleep in his elephant last night. Number three, there was a huge guard-looking guy staring at him, which was a little creepy, honestly.

"Git up," said the guard gruffly.

Gavroche blinked. "Say please."

The guard grabbed Gavroche's arm and dragged him out of bed and into a dark hallway, down two flights of stairs, and to a small room with a school desk in it. As he was pushed into the seat, Gavroche wondered if this was some kind of nightmare.

"Begin," said the guard, gesturing to a packet.

Gavroche blinked. "Begin what, exactly?"

"The test," said the guard with a hint of annoyance in his voice.

Gavroche shrugged. "Why?"

"Because you have to."

Gavroche picked up the pencil on the desk and twirled it absentmindedly between his fingers. "Look, guv'nor, even if I did know how to take a test, I'm not gonna do it without knowing why."

The guard spread his hands. "A new world order is coming, squirt, and if you know what's good for you, you'll take that test and be a part of it."

Gavroche rolled his eyes. "Whatever. I'd better get back to Paris. Thanks, but no thanks."

Gavroche hopped out of his seat and tried to walk to the door, but the guard grabbed him by his shirt collar and held him up to his face.

"I don't think so."

The guard cocked his fist back, and Gavroche gulped, closing his eyes and bracing for impact. It didn't come. Gavroche cracked open one eye to see the look of confusion on the guard's face.

"Wha-?" said the guard before dropping Gavroche. "Where'd he go?"

Gavroche was a bit confused, but he didn't think much on it. He was too busy running. The corridors seemed to be deserted, and there seemed to be no end to them. I just hope that guard doesn't... A loud siren started wailing and Gavroche facepalmed. Guards like the one that he'd seen zoomed through the halls, headed in all directions. Curious, Gavroche followed one of them. Ah, the advantages of getting lost in a crowd, he thought.

Suddenly, a hand closed on his shoulder. The next thing Gavroche knew, he was being pulled through the halls at an almost supersonic speed. The tile under his feet changed to foul-smelling mud, then to cobblestone, then to asphalt, then to carpet as he was pushed into a cramped area.

"Gavroche?" he heard someone say.

Gavroche blinked. "What just happened?"

Just a refresher, here are the people who have been picked up:

Cosette

Marius

Enjolras

Joly

Jehan

Grantire

Courfeyrac

Combeferre

Gavroche
