Chapter 23

Jack Frost

Crap. This was bad. This was really, really bad.

"Jack, I'm sure no one will notice," my mom tried to reassure me.

I wheeled onto her. "Mom! My pants go all the way past my shins! I'M PRETTY SURE PEOPLE WILL NOTICE!" She winced. She had washed my suit last night, but it had shrunk in the wash. "Dry clean only, Mom. It had TAGS."

"Well, excuse me for having other things on my mind." Mom rolled her eyes. "Go get one of Aster's slacks or something."

I scowled at the mention of my surly cousin. "His clothes are way too long and aren't the sort of thing you'd wear to a school-appropriate formal dance."

She threw her hands up. "Fine! Go look for something in your dad's old clothes!" Her voice cracked on the word "dad". I felt bad that I had pushed her even deeper under pressure, but I moved past the guilt and ran up the stairs. Dad had left Mom when she was pregnant with Maddie. She still kept his old clothes in her closet. I opened up the closet doors and stepped in. She had her clothes on the left, though the piles were slowly creeping to the right, where my dad's clothing was. I pulled out a pair of black trousers identical to the ones that had shrunk in the washer. I put them on. They were clean, not dusty, and fit me like a glove. I smiled sadly to myself in the mirror and ran back down the stairs.

I grabbed the car keys and yelled, "Bye, Mom! Bye, Maddie! See you later tonight!" And with that, I walked out and shut the door, locking it behind me.

I pulled the car up to Rapunzel's house and got out quickly. I smoothed down my hair and checked my breath before ringing the doorbell. Her mother opened up the door.

"Oh! Hello there!" she said warmly, then leaned in. "Now listen here, young man," she hissed. "If you dare try anything with my Rapunzel, I swear you won't live to see tomorrow."

"Don't worry, ma'am," I replied. "I never plan no hurting Rapunzel. I love her, and that's that."

"Good." Gothel smiled. "Glad we got that little issue cleared up." She cleared her throat before calling up, "Rapunzel! Come down, Jack's here!"

"Coming!" was Rapunzel's reply. She hurried down the stairs, yet made no noise. She smiled at me as we linked arms and I led her to the car, Gothel watching our every move. Punzie took shotgun as I climbed into the driver's seat.

"Next stop, Disney-Dreamworks High!" I grinned at my date and she smiled back as we zoomed down the street.

Yeah, sorry, it's again another short chapter but I'm running out of time-too much homework and extra-curricular activities. :P But I swear on the River Styx and the Sorting Hat that I will try to update this story ASAP.
