Chapter 24
Rapunzel Corona
The Snow Ball was positively magical. Crystal chandeliers hung from the ceiling and blue and white snowflakes decorated the walls. I spotted Elsa, who was positively glowing with radiance in an ice-blue dress and light blue heeled mules. Her hair was plaited in a gorgeous braid over one shoulder and was adorned with tiny snowflakes.
"Elsa!" I called. She turned and grinned when she saw me. "You look amazing! And this place . . ." I gazed around us.
"Yes. I never knew what the decoration crew was capable of," she said softly. She looked at my outfit. "You are quite lovely yourself." Then she saw Jack, hanging awkwardly off to the side. "Hi, Jack," said Elsa, her voice still quiet.
Jack started. "Hey, Elsa." He rubbed the back of his neck uncomfortably. "Um, I'm going to go look for Hiccup . . . see you later, though?" he asked me hopefully.
"Definitely," I told him, and he loped off. I looked at the other girl. "So, is your date-"
"Hans, yes." Elsa nodded her head. "He will be here shortly, he just had a few matters to attend to." She looked like she was going to say more, but there was a high shriek of feedback and everyone winced and covered their ears. Principal Manny called out his apologies for the technical difficulties and while I was distracted, Elsa slipped away, blending into the crowd.
I found Jack rather quickly. He was hanging out at the refreshments table, chatting with some of the other guys on his ice hockey team. "Hi," he said when he saw me. "Do you want to find Hiccup and Merida?"
"I thought you said you were going to look for them! They said they'd be here as soon as they could." I craned my neck to see over the many heads. I let out an impatient sigh of frustration. I hated how so many people were so much taller than me, and I was average height!
Jack gave a little laugh and looked around. "I don't see 'em. Do you want to go outside and look?"
"It's probably too cold for that." I shivered a little at the thought. "Berk in winter is atrocious."
"HEY!" came a familiar Scottish-accented voice. I grinned as I turned around to see Merida shaking snow out of her bright red hair.
"Hey, Mer!" I greeted her warmly, hugging her. She broke away to take off her coat and hand it to Hiccup. He smiled sheepishly at Jack and me as he went over to the makeshift "coat closet", aka a pile of clothes, to toss their jackets in.
"Et's snowing harder than ever out there!" Merida declared, no longer shivering.
"Really? It was clear when Jack and I arrived." I looked at Jack with a confused glance. He merely shrugged. "Well, I guess this is Berk. It snows like crazy here."
"Snow's cool," Jack told me with a grin. I shook my head at him.
"I'm all for snow days," I said. "But sometimes it's nice just to let spring and all the flowers come in."
"True, but ah like summer. No school." Merida crossed her arms, then dragged us out to the dance floor and started doing a Scottish folk dance with Hiccup. His cheeks turned as red as his date's hair as she swung him around and around.
"Come on, Jack!" I pulled him into a dance, remembering the first dance of the year, when I was the one person dancing. I had gotten everyone to dance again, despite their protests.
We laughed as we swirled around other people. My skirt flew around me as we dipped and danced and leapt and stomped. I was breathless and hot by the time the music stopped. We had lost Hiccup and Merida in the crowds some time ago.
Principal Manny walked up onto the stage again. "Are you all having fun?" Everyone shouted "yeah", myself and Jack included. "That's good! You kids should enjoy these things while you still can. Now, to announce our Snow King and Queen . . . the votes have been decided!" Nod handed the principal the two boxes filled with voting ballots. "Your Snow Queen is . . . "
