Incoming call

Dad

Kaito froze. His mind turned blank, hard blue orbs gazed intently at the shining screen. The phone continued to vibrate, ringing in his ears.

Pick up…I should pick up… His thoughts would not connect with his nerves. His hands stayed unmoving, his gaze frozen on those three letters, until they flashed, suddenly blanking to black.

One missed call

Not a minute later, another harsh vibration. Kaito did not even have the time to put the phone back in his pocket. He glared at the little envelope icon.

One new message.

It was mocking him.

"Dell, change course. Dad needs me to go home." Kaito's irritation was obvious in his furrowed eyebrows and his ugly grimace.

The white haired pilot raised an eyebrow, but did not question the order. The blue haired man leant back in his seat with a huff, mumbling harsh words under his breath. He whipped out his mobile phone once again, and messaged Miku and Rin, informing them they might be late. There was no time to go back, and God knew how long his father would keep them there. Especially now that Kaito was under suspicion.

He gulped as he looked over his father's latest message:

Come home now or I will arrest you.

He had no doubt his father knew his current address. It was a miracle he had not been hunted down already. It had always been his intention to be a bit rebellious, but his parents had never paid him any attention. Until now.

Kaito's heart was racing, yet his eyes were blazing with fury. He hadn't even done anything worthy of his father's attention. Why was he being threatened so suddenly? Didn't help that he hadn't seen his face in almost a year.

Len meekly slid his eyes over to his partner. He felt like he was standing in a minefield. One wrong move, and Kaito might just explode.

"I'm guessing there's no point asking if he's going to let me change back, huh," he mumbled to Dell, who grinned and nodded in confirmation.

"No worries, kid. You look good."

There were no landing pads within the vicinity, so Dell sneakily parked in an abandoned field of trees, leaving Kaito and Len to walk to their destination.

"Why do I have to go with him?" Len complained to Dell quietly, fearful of the still-fuming Kaito.

"He probably needs you as a witness or something." The male had taken out a cigarette and was now puffing on it like he had all the time in the world. "You should probably be there to stop him if he suddenly erupted into a fit of anger." Here he chuckled, as if the fact wasn't anything new. "Wouldn't want him in more trouble than he's already in…"

Len gulped and looked back anxiously at the man he would be accompanying. That pissed off look was enough to end his conversation with Dell. He bowed in pardon to the silver haired male, then hurriedly took his leave.

"Come on Len, we'll be late." Kaito's words were clipped, revealing only a portion of his inner turmoil. The tension was thick as the mismatched pair walked on in strained silence. Both parties had neglected to speak for the whole journey. It was an impossible feat in such a situation. The streets were quiet, there was barely any wind. The moon shone with a gentle glow, it was almost a peaceful scene…almost.

Kaito made an abrupt turn into the front yard of a red brick house. The irregular clacking of Len's heels indicated he was caught by surprise. As the home of such an individual as Kaito, the structure did seem uncannily ordinary.

The creaky wooden door was audibly slammed open as Kaito entered the house with the demeanour of a military general. He strode forward with the confidence of familiarity, yet he held himself as if poised for battle, awaiting an ambush at any moment. Meanwhile, Len tried to make himself as small as possible, treading lightly, eyes fixed to the floor, vainly hoping for a hole to open up somewhere and swallow him up. Absently, he wondered why the door was not even locked, he didn't even have time to mentally prepare himself for the confrontation.

A small corridor led them to a larger space, with soft sofas and a mounted television on the wall. It was a living room, and there were two occupants in it: a rough looking man with purple locks, and a gentler woman, with the same shade of cobalt hair as the man responsible for Len's current predicament.

Len felt he had well and truly entered the lion's den. He could only hope to become a mouse insignificant enough to avoid attracting their attention.

Kaito's parents, God I'm scared. Why am I even here? What will I do if he gets busted? I'm his bloody accomplice for God's sake! Didn't he say his dad was a cop or something? Is that him? That is one hell of a scary guy. Ah crap, I'm really going to die today, aren't I?

The poor boy never would have imagined to meet his end in this somewhat ordinary house, with not-so-ordinary occupants, accompanied by a guy he had barely known for three days, and in a dress to boot.

Life really sucked at the moment.

The man on the sofa sensed Kaito's presence before he had even walked into the room. Len's heart nearly stopped when he turned and trained his red eye onto them. Layers of bandages were wrapped around his head, he wore a particularly bloody eyepatch on his right eye. Len could see more bandages past the collar of his white shirt. What sort of life did this guy lead? He seemed more like a mafia boss than a police officer.

"Kaito." The man barked his son's name like an order. "Sit down."

Kaito clicked his tongue like the rebellious son he is before casually striding over to a separate sofa. Len hurriedly sat next to him, closer to the door, and as far away as possible from the scary man with the bandages. Kaito's mother got up and also bustled away, mentioning something about tea.

What was left was an incredibly heavy silence between the remaining three males. Len was scared to breathe. The policeman's single red orb looked him over curiously, however the man did not say a word.

Kaito was the one to break the silence.

"Father, I-"

"I am very disappointed in you, Kaito." His father's words had the effect of a giant wave, engulfing everything, and making any argument obsolete.

"But I-"

"Stealing is a crime. As the son of a police officer you should be ashamed." He paused to make sure his son would not interrupt anymore, looked at his son, then looked away and sighed. "I truly do wish to give you a chance to explain yourself, but I know it will be pointless. Toshio Hirata is one of the wealthiest men on the planet and it is inexcusable-"

Kaito could not contain himself anymore. "Toshio Hirata is a rotten perverted bastard who needed to be taught a lesson."

"Don't be ridiculous Kaito, it doesn't matter who they are. Stealing remains a very serious crime!"

Kaito stood up out of anger. Len shrunk back into the sofa. He had never seen the man enraged like this before.

"Father you've never given a rat's ass about me before-"

"I know what you've been doing, Kaito." The other man also stood. "We have a testimony from a witness that you've stolen Prima too. I-"

"I've been doing this for months! And you clearly knew that!"

"Kaito…you are my son, I-"

"The things I've stolen in the past," Kaito's voice became uncannily quiet. "Less than one percent of the population would have even cared. You did nothing about it."

"Kaito-"

"This time, not even one tenth of that one percent would even have known…" his words built up, wave after wave. "Barely anybody knew about the party…"

"Listen, that Toshio Hirata-"

And suddenly, realisation hit. "The bastard bribed you." Their roles had been reversed. His words crashed down like a tsunami, revealing the truth with painful clarity. His father was rendered speechless. Kaito's heart sank. "I was sure the police were busy with a much larger case, and couldn't spare the personnel to trace such petty crimes as mine. But to think you would stoop so low…"

"…I'm sorry Kaito. Chief's orders."

"…How did he…"

"Security camera."

Of course, Miku had no way of entering the mansion beforehand. Kaito chuckled mirthlessly. Empty laughs, it was almost ironic. The one time he couldn't use his trump card, he was caught.

Am I really that useless without her? I knew but, I guess I was never all that I was cracked up to be…

He looked at his poor inexperienced accomplice, paralysed with fear.

"Sorry Len, looks like this is the end of the line for us…"

The blonde nodded stiffly. There was an almost respectful silence…

And then the doorbell rang.

"I'll get it~" the bubbly voice seemed so out of place, as Kaito's mother hurried to the door. There was not a trace of the tea she was supposed to be making anywhere. Confused glances were traded between the three males.

Kaito's mother squealed. Len visibly jumped in his seat, Kaito went rigid with surprise, while his father's eyes widened a fraction.

"Who-?"

"I'm home!"

Scuffling was heard as the visitor changed shoes, steady footsteps approached. A shock of red hair emerged from the door frame.

"Hey dad, did you miss me?"
