While in the 501st ARC he was taken out for 4 months and he was tested on with all sorts of experimental devices and everything. James had become a lab rat and so he was giving different kind of drugs and all the drugs and the experiments made his body hardly feel pain, increase everything in his body and make him need no sleep. They had made James a monster and so he was completely invulnerable to pain and attacks and he was called by the people who experimented on him 'Machine of Death'.
