Fred was released from the hospital two days ago and its done nothing but worry Hermione. He has been distant and barely shows up to any classes. They only spoke once very briefly once he was out of the hospital wing. She was worried about him beyond measure. She was losing Fred she could feel it. As childish as it was she wasnt ready to give him up. It wasnt for anyone else but herself, it was selfish. Very selfish, but she needed him to be alive. She needed him to be able to function.
Hermione walked into the Library, instantly she felt a tiny surge of relief overcome her as she took in the scent of the old bound books. She let a small smile tug the corners of her lips as she decided what book to read. The mere thought of being able to relax with such a good book made her almost gidy. She has not read any book just for her own personal joy in almost a month. She missed the release, it was one of her outlets of stress. Actually, the last time she was in this library was with, well, Fred.
She shook the though and walked over to her old usual spot near the back. She picked out an old fiction book. One of far away kingdoms, princes in shining armor and happily ever after.
It was not long until she was entranced inside the mystical world of the book. page after page, the minutes turned to hours as she sat there. The bright morning light that once shone brightly through the windows was now dull orange light of the sunset. Hermione remained in her spot completely oblivious.
She was interrupted from her little world when a book was slammed on the table before her.
She felt like murdering the person to wake her up from her sanctuary. Slowing she looked up with an evil glare printed upon her features.
"What the Bloody Hell could YOU possibly want?" She barked at the scowling boy.
The boy merely smirked her pushed the blonde hair out of his eyes and straitened his green Slytherin tie, "I have something for you Granger, better play nice before I change my mind."
She stood up abruptly and snapped at him while scowling,"There isn't a thing in the world I'd want from you."
She slung her bag over her shoulder and started to walk away.
"Then I'll just talk to Fred about it... Oh wait, he doesn't remember the night he should have died... does he?" He yelled after her. She stopped in her tracks standing still. A shiver overcame her body at the blunt memory and she fought to keep her voice steady, "How the hell would you know about that?"
"You're smarter than that. It was MY mother who had helped you was it not?" He said as if it was the simplest thing in the world
"I don't need anything from you Malfoy." She spat at him.
His smirk turned into a crooked smile and he chuckled as he said , "That Granger is where you are wrong. You see, I should be in Azkaban right now, as should my mother. But only my Father is. You know why."
"Perhaps I do. Why's it matter?" She was very skeptic at the moment. She had no idea what game Malfoy could be playing at. But he was right she remembered. SHe couldn't forget that night if she tried to.
"I have a few questions for you and in return, I can answer all of your questions about the spell and the weasel-trash twin... which one was he? George?"
"Why should I trust you?" She asked now facing him and searching intensely for any form of giveaway that he was lying.
"What's your other option?" He said meeting her gaze. He was the epitome of unreadable
"All I have to do is answer your questions?"
"That is what I said is it not?"
"ALright, ask then. I don't have all day." She spat the words out as if they were venom.
"Now tell me, why would YOU. Hermione Granger, the innocent, rule abiding citizen break every rule, using forbidden curses, dark magic, bringing back the dead, saving criminals. Why do all that to save my mother and I?"
SHe nearly laughed at him, "It was not for you. Not in the least bit. I did it for... for Fred. You couldn't ever understand how it is. I loved him. I loved him with the most capacity I had to love someone. I'd rather die myself then have him dead. You couldn't understand, you've only ever cared for yourself. You'd never know what it meant to love someone that much."
"Maybe you're right. But you didn't have to save us, but you did. Why?"
"Well, She stayed to her word, Your Mum saved Fred. I promised her your safety. I stick to my word." She said sternly.
"I guess I don't get it is all. Years of my ridicule. My bullying. Years of me being selfish, big-headed, and crude then you just... Save us you had your chance to throw us away, you had Fred. You were all safe. But yet you show us a kindness we don't deserve."
"I guess, I just knew you never wanted to. I knew you didn't, and couldn't, kill dumbledore. I knew you didn't want to be a death eater. I knew you were threatened with your life. I knew it and I knew you just wish you could fall asleep and never wake up. I knew you regretted everything. And I know you will always be a pompous, thick-headed jerk, but I also know if the same situation were to come up again you'd be fighting next to me. I know you're stronger now. I just I knew you needed a second chance, how scared you were of your father, I could see it in your eyes. I can tell when someone needs help. Now he's gone and I can tell, the same old Malfoy is there, but he'd never hurt us as you used to. And you can deny it, but as proof, you have not once called me mudblood yet."
He said nothing just looked away and to the floor. It was silent for a long time before he finally spoke, "I saw my Auntie Bella do a lot of bad things. I heard of her doing a lot of bad things. I myself have even done a lot of bad things, but when she attacked you, when she scarred your arm, that's when I knew I was on the wrong side. Then even after that, after I watched her torture you. You lot saved us in the room of requirement. Then you saved me from a life imprisoned in Azkaban. I never understood it."
"When I did those things I wasnt thinking about all the bad things you've done to me. I only thought 'That's a life that does not have to die. That doesn't deserve death. A life i can save.' I wouldn't have tried to get you out of Azkaban regardless because it's the right thing to do." She said locking his gaze. She had this warmth to her in that moment that wasn't like any other. Draco had never seen someone who tried so hard to be good. He used to ridicule her for it, but now he could tell it's what made her so much better than anyone else he's ever met. He was in debt to her.
He changed the topic and said, "You were not mad at my mother?"
"Why would I be?"
"She took Fred's memory away."
"She didn't mean to...She did not know that it would take his memory she thought it would take my magic."
"And you are sure about that?"
"Well, I was there when it happened Malfoy."
"Well, I thought you'd be smart enough to check the translation."
"What are you trying to say?"
He said nothing in reply. He only put down a book and slid it to her. Hermione opened the cover and found it to be a translation dictionary she had used long ago, but inside was just a spare piece of folded parchment. She picked up the parchment and recognized Fred's handwriting immediately. It had the curse that was spoken and below it was the translation.
Hermione felt her heart sink down to her stomach as she connected all the dots.
"She knew they'd take away our love. That they'd make him forget." Hermione stated still bewildered by her new acknowledgement.
"Yes... and because of the way she said it... There is no way he will ever, remember. There is no way he could ever remember." Draco said monotonously.
"He's really gone. For good." She said and clutched the paper tightly in her hands crinkling it. She couldn't stop the tear from escaping her eye.
Draco remained silent. Hermione finally said, "I always knew he was gone... I just I couldn't give up. I couldn't believe he was never coming back. SOmetimes it feels like he's who he used to be. I just want him back. He hasn't even talked to me in days."
Draco looked at her with... sympathy? Or what his version of sympathy was as he spoke, "I don't like you Granger. You know that. But I owe you. As a Malfoy I hate the idea of being in debt to anyone. I will always be in your debt, but to make up for part of it, I'm offering you some Valuable advice you should tak note of..."
He paused for a moment and crouched down so he was at eye level with her. His gaze locking hers he looked like an actual human being as he said simply, "Forget the past. It's in the past. You can't start a new while clinging to the past. Fred is here. He is alive, cherish that. Fred knows that he loves you, It's a miracle. Don't be greedy. It will never be how you remembered it. But at least you have someone, Hermione."
Hermione was struck speechless Not alone did he show emotion, but he called her by her name, not in any of the 8 years they've known each other has he called her Hermione. Malfoy merely stood up straitened his robes and his smug arrogant look overcame him once more.
But Hermione could see in his face he was changed, he was good. Even if no one else would see his kind side, it was there.
Just as she was about to say something to his retreating form she was in shock once more. A sudden realization Hit Hermione as if it were a Tidal wave.
Malfoy was right.
Everything he said was right. She did what she would have never done in a million years. She stopped thinking. She just stopped frozen in her spot. When a tear escaped her eye she stood up running to the nearest window of the library she withdrew the ring on her ring finger and threw it with as much strength as she could muster. She didn't cry, or weep. She didn't feel her wave of depression or loss. She felt a release, she finally let go of her tormenting past. She could finally be with Fred and with that thought in her mind a very faint very slight smile tugged at the corners of her lips.
