Chapter 10: My Walk with a Hobbit

I was glad that I at least had the water to cover up my naked body from Legolas. However after a couple of seconds of covering my beast underwater did my lungs start to ache for air and so I was forced to resurface. When I broke through the water's surface my face was the first to be kissed by the Shire's cool fresh air. I wiped the excess water that lingered in my eyes away with my hands. I opened my eyes not expecting to see everything clear and as sunny as when I had first came to the river.

As the water waved gently around my shoulders I looked around confused. All of the fog was gone...and he was gone to. I looked down at the river. What happened couldn't have been my imagination. It was just too real. The harsh water, the dark fog...and Legolas. He felt real, too real for a simple day dream. But the dream itself was too surreal to be true. I must have fallen asleep. That was the only possible explanation that I could think of. My dreams can feel very real sometimes. I can't believe I was that reckless to just fall asleep while I was still in the river. I'm lucky that when I went below surface the water woke my up.

I stood there in the water just letting my arms float away from each other in spread eagle. My thoughts circled around my dream of Legolas. I smiled while thinking of how close we were in the dream. I wonder if this is my subconscious telling me that maybe I had to let out the negative emotions that I have been keeping bottled up. I came out here not only to take a bath but to have some alone time and cry and let my feelings out. But I feel like I had already did that. Could a dream really have that much of an affect on me?

The image of me in Legolas's arms crying came into my mind. And the way he looked at me... i've never felt so small, and perfect. I snorted slightly through my nose. Yes, that was defiantly a dream. But a really nice dream I could never open up to someone else like that, especially a stranger. The thought was kind of embarrassing really. Being vulnerable in front of someone like that. It would be my ending.

I sunk down until the water was a little above my chin and turned my head in the direction of Sparkle. She was still laying in the grass near the place where I had tied her to the bush. As I started to walk towards the shore I felt my body getting heavier. I must've been asleep for a while to not be able to support my own weight.

When I stepped onto the dirt with naked foot it awkward pressed against my foot so I scrunched up my nose in distaste. I went over to Sparkle and her admittedly lit up as she got up and wigged her tail. I smiled down at her before I gently felt my clothes with my damp hand. I scowled as I realized that not only were clothes completely dry, but they were warm as well. Now even if I was in he water long enough for them to dry they wouldn't have been warm, the air around here is much to cool. And before I even got into the water I remember seeing something strange... I looked away from the strange clothes and at Sparkle before my worries started. Perhaps it is the peacefulness of the Shire hat is causing my mind to wonder and open the door to an overactive imagination.

I sighed loudly and I took my towel from one of the branches to dry off before I caught a cold. The sun may have been warm but the cool blowing air was starting to nip at my skin. After I finished drying off I started to get dressed. When I started zipping up my jacket I looked down at Sparkle when she started to become anxious. Over time she had learned that after I zipped up my jacket it was time to go.

When I heard foot steps coming through the grass behind the bushes Sparkle's ears perked up in alert. I untied her leash from the bushes and pulled her closer to me. Who is that?

"Jessica? Are you decent?" I heard a small voice asked. I sighed in relief when I recognized the voice to be Frodos. I came from behind the bushes to meet him.

"Yes I am." I answered. Frodo smiled at me. "Just let me get the bucket and my things." I said. I went back behind the bushes and slipped on my book bag then I grabbed the bucket. When I came back to Frodo I took off Sparkles leash and put her down.

"Did you have a nice bath?" Frodo asked. I looked at the river as we walked away from it then back at him.

"It was...nice." I said uncertainly as I thought about how my mind played tricks on me the entire time. Frodo just smiled and nodded his head as we came back to the road.

"Bilbo's birthday party starts as soon as the sun goes down." He said and then turned to look at me. "What do you want to do until then?" He asked. I made a thoughtful expression as I thought about his question. What to do in a place like Middle Earth..? A place where televisions and computers don't exist... That means no television shows, no movies, no computer games, and no videos. I sighed through my nose and pouted. I guess i'll stick to something that I have done since I was a kid to pass the time.

"I'll just draw something..." I said nonchalantly.

"Are you good at drawing?" He asked.

"Well everybody has their own definition of what is considered 'good'. So how about you look at the picture after I draw it and decide for yourself?" I said. Frodo nodded at me with a thoughtful expression.

"Okay." He said.

"Good." I said with a smile.

The walk back to Bilbo's house didn't seem take as long as it did when we headed to the river. Perhaps because I didn't take my time to examine it. When we got back to Bilbo's home Frodo opened the door for me and then he told me that he had to go meet his friends at the pub for a drink.

"You know can leave your stuff here if you would like to come." He said politely and I gently shook my head.

"I'll be fine Frodo you ahead." I said.

"Are you sure?" He asked me.

"Yes, it's alright. I don't drink anyways. And remember i'll be busy drawing. I hardly pay any attention to who is and who isn't around when I draw." I told him and he nodded.

"Alright, i'll come get you before the party." He said leaving. Oh the party... I bet a lot of them will be staring at me.

I shook off that last uncomfortable thought and went inside the house and I closed the door after Sparkle came inside. It was just us alone in the house now.

"Really quite in here isn't it Sparkle?" I asked looking down at her. She just glanced at me before looking down at the floor and sniffing it. Going down the wooded floor hallway to my left I found a room with a fire place and a table cluttered with books and papers. After I took off my book bag and sat it in the corner I walked towards the table and neatly cleared a spot for me to draw. I went to my book bag and I pulled out a two white sheets of paper, a pencil, and a drawing pen. Sparkle followed me back to the table and she sat down and watched me.

I placed the paper onto the table and sat on a small stool before looking down at it. White. The single color that the single blink paper screamed. Begging to be anything else but blink, even if that meant being ruined. Or I could make it an beautifully overwhelming eyesore. Okay, now i'm getting a little carried away with myself. I'll just start when something simple, like the outline of a women.

After I finished making her body I drew her hair and I made my wrist curve slightly to make it flow. Then I switched to pen and filled her in with intricate designs. Most people cannot even imagine how to make them. However for me it's not imagining something complicated. It is drawing something simple on top of something simple. After I was finished I erased the pencil outline and looked down at the whole picture and smiled at it. Now it's time to color it. I looked for the right coloring pencils in front of my book bag and I pulled out navy blue, orange and purple. And so after of coloring I was finished. The navy blue had brought the women's curves, the purple her legs, and the orange her hair. I looked down at the picture proud of what I had done.

I then looked up at the window and noticed that the sun was going down. And not so far away I heard the front door open and close. Sparkle jumped up on her feet and barked.

"Jessica?" I heard Frodo call.

"Frodo i'm in here." I said then I started to put away utensils when I started hearing his foot steps come down the hallway. After I put my tools away in my book bag I came back to the table and sat down just when Frodo peeked his head out of the hallway. I smiled at Frodo and he smiled back at me and brought his whole body inside of the room. And Sparkle wigged her tail when she realized that it was Frodo. He walked over to me before he spoke.

"It's sun set we should be heading over to the party now." He said to me and then he looked down at the cleared table and saw my picture. He was in awe of it. I don't mean to toot my own horn but I feel really excited when people make those expressions at my work. It's one of the high lights of my life. To know that I captivated someones mind with my art. It is a truly an awesome feeling to be able to do that to people. Frodo put his hand beside the picture, his blue eyes staring at it in wonder.

"You did this?" He asked looking up me. I gave him a bigger smile and nodded my head. He looked back down at the drawing. "I've never seen a drawing like this..." He said examining it closely. Still smiling I looked at the window and saw that the sun was behind the trees in the distance.

"Shouldn't we be going Frodo?" I asked him as I watched the sun going down. He looked back up at me in question then he looked at the window.

"Oh! Bilbo's party!" He said turning towards me.

"Yeah..." I agreed while nodding my head. Then Frodo walked ahead of me towards the hallway and I followed after with Sparkle at my heels.

"We should be going right now. And you can the other hobbits." He said enthusiastically. When we stepped in front of the front door to go out I looked down at Sparkle.

"I'm sorry Sparkle you have to stay behind. Bye." I said waving at her as I ducted my hand and we exited. After I closed the door I could hear her start to wine behind and I sighed. Frodo just gave the door an odd look before turned around to head out of the fence.

"So what are these hobbit parties like Frodo?" I asked him curiously. Drawing had gotten my mind off of the idea of me being at a party that I most likely will be considered an oddity at. And unfortunately I just reminded myself of that. I hope that I wont feel to out of place, I wont be able to wonder off to some random place without getting lost.

"Well they are really fun and lively...and big." I smiled when he said big. "There is always a lot of good tasting food, dancing...and Gandalf's fireworks!" He said looking at me. "I remember when I small...smaller, I used to try and them with my hands!" He chuckled. I smiled and chuckled as well, not because I thought that it was funny, because he thought it was funny. It must be since he laughed right? I wanted my smile to be as genuine as his so I imagined myself as a little girl jumping up repeatedly at the sky trying to touch something that couldn't be touch. Not to mention giggling like mad because of the endless fun.

I understood why he laughed now. It wasn't anything like a joke. It was remembering how fun it was to do it and the almost nostalgic way he that he remembered it, as if he wanted to feel that way again. My smile widened as I understood him more.

"What are the birthday parties like where you're from?" H asked me curiously. I glanced at him before facing straight ahead again as I thought about my answer. I haven't had a birthday party since I was a kid.

"I don't really have anymore birthday parties anymore...and I haven't been to one in a while." I said lowly. I didn't really feel any particular way about it, it was the truth.

"Really?" He asked.

"Mhm." I sounded. I could see the lights of Bilbo's birthday party not so far away in the distance.

"But you must have had one as a youngling, right?" He asked looking up at me. I nodded down at him with a wide smile on my face as I thought about my early birthday parties.

"Yes! They were fantastic! My whole family and some of the neighbors and their kids would come over to my house. And the house would be decorated in pink and purple! And we would play really fun games! I even remember what the cake looked like. A Minnie Mouse cup cake...cake." I said smiling.

"It sounds like fun." Frodo said as he smiled along with me.

"Mhm, it was." I said as we entered the party. The entire hobbit population seemed to already be here. And it looked like Bilbo was already telling his stories. There was so much food and it looked like the hobbits were not wasting it at all. I saw Gandalf laughing happily as he lit fireworks for the hobbits. I laughed watching him enjoy himself.

"Frodo!" I heard someone shout. Frodo and I turned our heads towards the shout to see three hobbits holding their drinks in the air towards us. Frodo laughed loudly and clapped his hand before he walked over to them. I didn't want to intrude so I stayed where I as, though I did immediately start to feel awkward. Frodo looked back at me with a smile and my a come on gesture with his head.

"I'm alright." I mouthed to him. He gave me a thoughtful look before I waved him away and nodded my head in Gandalf's direction. After he looked towards Gandalf he nodded at me and then he turned his attention back towards his friends. Before I walked away I noticed that one of the hobbits that sat at the table looked like Sam. He caught me watching him and gave me a hesitant smile and I felt brave enough to smile back at him. He nodded to me bashfully before I turned back towards Gandalf's direction.

As I continued to walk between the tables and chairs towards Gandalf I started to feel increasingly uncomfortable with all the stares that I was getting from most of the hobbits. There was this one hobbit women with brunette colored hair, she looked directly up at me with a strange expression while holding a huge plate of turkey. I raised an eyebrow at her as both stood there for a whole minute. When she realized that she was blocking my path her eyes widened and she scurried over to a table full of hobbit men. And by the they were attacking that turkey I could tell she kept them waiting for a while. I looked away from the table as shook my head at them.

When I finally reached Gandalf his back was turned to me as he was laughing. A hobbit nodded in my direction to get his attention so that he could turn around to face me. He nodded his head at me before speaking.

"Are you not having fun Jessica?" He said with a curious smile. I smiled back at him.

"Yes, it's very lively here." I responded. My answer wasn't all true, but I didn't want to dampened anyone's mood. Gandalf looked me in the eyes as if he knew that as well, yet he still manged to give me a cheerful smile before he turned around to continue the fireworks.

"That's very good." He said. I found a chair near Gandalf's cart and sat down. I watched the hobbits have a good time as they enjoyed each others company.

I turned towards a high pitch scream and saw children laughing together. They were jumping up and down trying to catch that looked like they were made of fire. One of the butterflies flew by my face and opened my mouth in surprises and wonder. It was such a small, innocent and magical thing. I smiled at it as it flew up high in the air way above the party. When I looked back down to the party again for some reason it seem brighter.
