9. Adventure

He did wind up going on that adventure after all. It was almost funny how he hadn't thought Magby and books didn't go well together. But training Magby meant burnt leaves and papers and too many times he had to hide his books where the baby Pokemon couldn't accidentally set them on fire.

So he wound up spending more time outdoors and while he couldn't transcend barriers that had been built for years in regards to the other kids so easily, he had fun with Magby.

It took him a while to admit it, just as it took him a while to admit the Magby would be staying with him. He was stubborn like that. And Magby made his old lifestyle impossible. Following him everywhere, even after he got a Poke-ball and kept him inside it for as long as was healthy for a baby Pokemon. And the smoke he was trying to develop into a Smokescreen attack made it very difficult to read in the aftermath.

'Fresh air is good for the bones,' his grandfather said.

'We had lots of adventures when we were young,' was his grandmother's wise words.

Ryouga just sighed. It seemed everyone suddenly wanted him to go on an adventure.

But that was because it wasn't a detestable idea any more.

And Magby was growing fast. Fast…but at the same time slow, because there were few battling opponents in the quiet village. Just Pidgey and Oddish and Magby couldn't get much experience from them.

Nurse Joy suggested she catch another Pokemon and train the two together. Ryouga decided he'd rather get something a little more interesting than a Pidgey – and he could only take one Pokemon trying to clog up his nostrils at a time.

That was assuming he wanted another Pokemon –

But he was getting worse and worse with arguing with himself these days. Especially since Magby had developed the habit of setting papers or grass or leaves on fire whenever he didn't get his way.

So he wound up on that adventure after all.
