(Hello again! This chapter's going to be a bit angsty, but I hope you like it nonetheless!)
After what seemed like seasons, Flamepaw's paws finally felt solid ground. In a slight daze, she looked around at her surroundings. She was in a beautiful field, fresh air and fresh prey scent filled her nostrils. Cautiously, she began to explore a bit until she reached a dark forest. The blue sky seemed to suddenly change into murky darkness, and fog seemed to swell up from the ground.
"Do not go there, young one." A stern but kind voice sounded behind her. Flamepaw whirled around, gasping as she saw the star speckled cat.
"Am I... Dead?" She asked before she could even process her words. Her voice was hollow and scared, but the Starclan cat was calm.
"No. Not yet, at least. But you have sustained injuries." She soothed. "Do not be scared. My name, is Bluestar."
Flamepaw's eyes widened in surprise. "Bluestar? The Bluestar?" She asked, her mind whirling as she recounted the tales she had been told.
Bluestar nodded, then wrapped her tail around Flamepaw's shoulders to guide her away from the Dark Forest.
As they padded back to the beautiful fields, Flamepaw looked up at Bluestar. "If I'm not dead, then why am I here?"
They stopped, and Bluestar turned to face Flamepaw. "I'm here to warn you, Flamepaw."
Flamepaw tilted her head a bit in curiosity, but her claws were flexing into the grass in fear. "Warn me about what?"
"As you saw tonight, another rift has spread among the clans. And it won't just affect Windclan, it will be like a ripple, spreading into every clan." Bluestar etched waves into the ground with her claw. "I believe you know what has caused it. But your destiny greatly weaves into this... Disturbance. You must act, Flamepaw. Not today, not tomorrow, but one day."
"What do I do?" Flamepaw wailed. "Why not somebody else?"
Bluestar merely shook her head. "Starclan cannot answer these questions, Flamepaw. It is the duty of the living to accept these facts and live."
But her words did not stop Flamepaw's confusion. "What do you mean? Please help me!" She begged. But as she spoke, the world began to fade, as she slipped back into consciousness. "No! Stop!"
Bluestar touched noses with the fading apprentice. "History has proved that not always does fire destroy. This time, it all rests on whether the fire has the wings to continue to burn."
Flamepaw groggily opened her eyes, but it took a few tries before she finally could see. She was inside the Medicine Cat's den, but she was alone. There were no other resting shapes aside from herself. Wincing, she sat up, her shoulders slumped in both pain and fatigue. Remembering on why she was there, she sniffed her injuries, which were covered in foul smelling poultices.
"Good. You're awake." Jayfeather's voice sounded from the entrance of the cave, and he padded forward to sniff her injuries. "I'll have to change the dressings. Lie down."
Flamepaw slumped down once again, resting her chin on her paws as she watched the entrance of the den. "How long was I asleep?" As she spoke, she realized how thirsty she was. 'And hungry!'
"Around a day and a half." He dropped a soaked moss-ball in front of her before turning to attend to her wounds. "Drink that, you need it."
Obediently, she lapped the water up, feeling cool relief spreading through out her body. "Have I missed anything?"
Jayfeather was reapplying the dressings. "Yes. Dewpaw, Amberpaw, Riverpaw, Snowpaw, Lilypaw, and Seedpaw are now known as Dewcloud, Amberfur, Riverstorm, Snowclaw, Lilyheart, and Seedpelt."
Flamepaw's ears flicked up in happiness. "That's wonderful! Too bad I couldn't watch it..." Jayfeather only grunted his reply, but Flamepaw didn't care. Her mind was whirling with angry thoughts. 'Riverstorm? He doesn't deserve to be a Warrior! He betrayed us! Bramblestar would be better off making a pile of mousedung a Warrior!'
"I don't why and nor do I care why you're angry, but it needs to stop! You're too tense for me to put on the herbs!" He hissed, but quickly relaxed. "Well, it doesn't matter anyway. Can you walk?"
Flustered, she got to her paws. "Y-yeah." She winced a bit at the stinging, but carefully, she managed to wobble closer to the entrance of the den. "Yeah, I can walk. Sort of."
Jayfeather nodded, but he didn't watch. "I can't see, but your movements sound stiff. Walk around camp a bit, then come back."
Flamepaw obeyed, and she limped out into the clearing. It took a moment for her eyes to adjust to the lighting, but once they did, as she looked around she could easily tell which cats were in the battle. They were scratched, and had a certain look in their eye, that might've been pride.
"Flamepaw!" Lionblaze's relieved mew came from her left. "Thank Starclan you're alright!"
"Hey dad." She purred, touching noses with the large golden tom. Soon, many other members of the clan swarmed around her, meowing words of well being. But, to Flamepaw's ignorance, Riverstorm hung back, his eyes darting around guiltily and his tail low.
Flamepaw had just finished greeting her sisters when Cinderheart ordered everyone back, and that she needed her space.
"Thanks mom." She dipped her head to Cinderheart, then proceeded to walk laps around camp. She was on her second lap when Riverstorm pulled her over.
"What do you want, you betrayer?" She spat, and Riverstorm winced. It was at this point that Flamepaw realized she was as big as him. Not as bulky, no, she was much slimmer and sleeker, but she was at full size.
"Please, let me explain, please..." He begged, and the desperation in his voice couldn't help but make Flamepaw feel a bit guilty.
"Well... Fine. Explain." She ordered with an irritated flick of her tail, but Riverstorm had already begun.
"Thank you! Well... During the gathering, he told me he knew who my parents were, and that he could bring me to them! I believed him, and he said all I had to do were some things..." He took in a shaky breath. "He mentioned your name, but I don't know what he was going to say because of the battle... But..." He was crouched low, his eyes brimming with fear. "Flamepaw, I think he wanted me to kill you."
Flamepaw recoiled in shock, but she quickly found her place again. "Well... It makes sense, but you were a fool, Riverstorm. I really like you, but I think there's a hole in my trust for you that won't be easily repaired." Despite her stern words, her heart was actually beating fast, her mind racing with panic.
Riverstorm straightened himself, his eyes full of relief. "I promise you, I will make it up to you, no matter what it takes." He touched noses with her, then padded away, his tail a bit higher in happiness.
Flamepaw returned to her laps, but this time, her mind was racing with different thoughts.
'Oh Starclan, I hope my destiny isn't connected with Ashtalon's!'
(Hello again! I just want to say I think Flamepaw's most defining feature is her anxiety and fear, and how she covers it up. Well, thanks for reading, and please leave some of your lovely reviews!)
