Chapter 6
4:22 PM April 2nd 1998, St. Erentrude's Playground
The woodchips crackle on the other side of the metal stairs. My heart races as the noisy footsteps make their way around the slide. I creep around the stairs at the same pace as the other person, staying out of their view. As they turn the corner, so do I.
No! I hit a wall. They are going to find me! My heart rate picks up as the footsteps stalk closer. I do the only thing I can think to do…run.
Dashing out of my hiding place, I hear my pursuer yell "Hey!" and chase me. I try to outrun him, but my legs are too short. A hand gently pushes on my shoulder and the person yells
"TAG!"
Jacob runs off. I laugh and begin my search for another kid to catch. Alyssa and Nina are at the top of the slide, thinking they are safe. Stifling my giggles, I sneak over and begin climbing the ladder. Grabbing Nina's foot I laugh "Tag!"
She screams in surprise as I grab onto the handrails of the ladder and quickly slide down. As I'm running away, I turn back and notice Alyssa go down the slide with Nina right behind her. They head off in the other direction, so I must be….oof.
My body crashes to the ground. Pain courses through me, but nothing too bad. I'll be fine. Looking to my left to figure out what I tripped over, I see Anton laying at my feet a bit dazed. "Sorry" I apologize, sitting up.
"It's fine" he mumbles while standing back up.
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah. You?"
I nod. Anton helps me off the ground. I dust off my shorts and top, making sure to get all the woodchips off. There are a few on my back that I can't reach and won't fall. When nobody is looking, I discretely use my powers to fling them off.
Anton suddenly gasps "Kelly, you're bleeding."
Following the trail of his eyes to my shoulder, I notice a tiny bit of red liquid seep through my shirt. Dang. I'll probably get chewed out by the nuns for that. Lifting my collar gives me a better look at the injury.
"It's just a small cut, no big deal."
"You should go clean that up anyways" Anton decides. "C'mon, I'll take you inside."
"It's really not that bad" I argue, a bit suspicious. What is he up to?
"Don't worry Kelly. I'll take care of you" Anton ushers me off the playground, towards the church.
"I'm really fine" I grumble, giving up arguing and letting him drag me to the building. Once inside, Anton ushers me towards the bathrooms. When he follows me into the girl's room I scoff "I can take care of myself!"
The boy holds his hands up defensively "I just want to make sure you are okay, help you clean your injury and all that."
"This is the girl's room!"
"Nobody but us are in here."
Rolling my eyes, I turn towards the sink. Grabbing a paper towel, I wet it under the faucet. Then I carefully dab the front of my shirt, hoping to draw some of the blood out of it. Damn, didn't work. Lifting my shirt collar, I begin dabbing at the wound. It really isn't that bad, the scrape is probably the size of a coin. As I draw the neckline of my shirt farther down my arm, I hear Anton intake a deep breath. Frowning I turn to look at him "Are you okay?"
"Yeah" Anton says, his eyes wide and staring at the towel covering my shoulder. "Just worried that you're hurt."
"It's a cut Anton."
"Still, it could get infected or something."
"I highly doubt that."
"It could" he argues.
"Well what am I supposed to do about that? It's not like I have any sanitizer on me. So any idea's genius?"
Anton raises an eyebrow, a smile crosses his face. "Genius?"
Why is he smiling at me like that? "I was being sarcastic."
Laughing, Anton walks out of the room saying "Well I am one because I know where the nuns keep some disinfectant in the lounge behind the alter."
I follow Anton grudgingly out of the bathroom and through the church. We walk into the lounge that is only supposed to be for the ministers and nuns. The first month Joey and I lived here, we were told to never go into this room. But apparently Anton doesn't care if the room is restricted, because he saunters in and walks over to a table in the corner. Against my best wishes, there is indeed a bottle of cut disinfectant on the table. Anton grabs the bottle.
I hold my hand out and mumble "Thanks."
Anton pauses when he turns to me. He stares at my shoulder for a while, then at my face, before settling his eyes on the bottle in his hand. A sly smirk crosses his features as the boy states "I'll do it."
"What?" I scoff.
"You might do it wrong."
"I'm eight years old. I think I can put some sanitizer on a cut."
"And I'm ten, so I can do it better."
I glare, "You seriously aren't going to let me do it myself?"
"Nope" Anton smiles.
Rolling my eyes I mutter "Whatever." I peel the wet towel off my shoulder, revealing my cut.
Anton takes in another deep breath and stares at my very minor injury. What is up with him? The boy quickly squirts some liquid onto his hand, then slowly touches my cut with it. As he gently rubs the disinfectant onto my cut and the area surrounding it, I notice a blush fill Anton's face. He gulps then says shyly
"You know Kelly. You're really pretty."
"What?"
"Nothing" Anton mumbles embarrassed.
I frown, did he just call me pretty? What the heck? Where did that come from?
A boy's voice sounds from the open doorway "What are you two doing?"
Turning I see Abel, Freddie, Danielle and two boys who are a grade or two above mine, but I don't know their names. All have raised eyebrows and are watching Anton and me curiously.
"I got a cut on the playground, Anton was helping me and put some disinfectant on it."
Freddie asks "You couldn't do that yourself?"
"He didn't think I could do it right" I scowl. "So he did it himself."
"Yeah" Anton says smugly. "She's okay with me touching the cut right there."
The boys in the group frown at the statement, a few giving Anton small glares. Danielle on the other hand begins laughing, seeing their expressions. Anton looks very proud of himself for some reason, but I can still see the blush. I myself, am completely confused.
Deciding to redirect the conversation, I ask "What are you guy's doing here?"
Abel answers, "We were going to explore the tunnel."
"Tunnel?"
Abel suddenly smiles excitedly. Sauntering into the room, he puts an arm around me and escorts me to the side of a desk. "It's behind this" he states, before letting go. Abel braces against the desk and begins pushing against it.
One of the older boys walks up "Here, I'll help."
"No, no!" Abel holds up a hand at the boy. Turning to me he smirks, winks and declares proudly "I can do it myself." Then he begins to push again.
After a minute or so of watching Abel struggle yet accept no help, I decide to intervene. Using my powers, I will the desk to scoot a few feet over, revealing a small door in the wall. Abel moved with it, making it seem as if it were all his doing. The boy stands, and smiles at me "See? I told you."
"Whatever" Freddie scoffs. "Anyone can push a desk. Hey Kelly, come look at this." Freddie walks over to the small door and opens it. Pulling a flashlight out of his back pocket, Freddie urges me to look into the tunnel. I crouch down next to him and peer in. The flashlight shines against the brick walls.
"Woah" I mutter amazed. "How did you find this?"
"We were trying to pull a prank on the sisters and move some furniture around…long story. But anyways, I discovered this when we moved the desk."
"You mean I discovered it" Abel argues. I turn and see him and Anton glaring at Freddie. "I also know the tunnel better than anyone."
"Do not" Freddie accuses.
"Do too. C'mon Kelly, I'll give you a tour."
Biting my lip I mumble "I don't know if this is a good idea."
"Don't worry Kelly, I know what I'm doing" Abel assures, placing a hand on my shoulder.
"No, don't worry because I'll be there" Anton interjects. He grins "I'll keep you safe."
"Don't listen to him" Freddie tells me. "Follow me and you'll be fine."
One of the older boys interrupts "I don't care who leads, someone just go in already. Dinner starts in twenty minutes."
"I'll go first!" Freddie declares. Quickly, he crawls through the door and calls "It's okay Kelly, you can come through." I hesitate before following. It isn't too difficult to get through the opening. Once I'm in the tunnel, Freddie's hand is there to help me up. His flashlight is pointed down the tunnel. He whispers "Isn't this cool?"
"Do you know where this leads to?"
"Yup!" Abel says beside me, sending a surprised jolt through my body. I didn't hear him crawl inside the tunnel. "You know the St. Michael chapel at the bottom of the hill near town? It goes there."
I notice a few others make their way through the passages entrance as I ask "Why is it here?"
"Well we can't be sure" an older boy says. He and Danielle light two more flashlights. "But I think it is from the old church."
"Old church?"
"Yeah. The church was rebuilt in the nineteenth century. There isn't much we know about the previous building. I think this used to be a tunnel connecting the church and the rest of the town. I'm sure there is probably one leading to the site of where the castle used to be."
"That's really cool" Danielle states. This must be here first time in the tunnel too, because she is examining the walls closely.
The seven of us spend a few minutes exploring. We stay pretty close together, none straying from the group. Anton, Freddie and Abel are constantly asking if I'm okay. Each time I grumpily answer yes, wishing they would leave me alone. At one point I slip past the older boys, using them as a barricade from the three. I find myself next to Danielle.
"Are you okay?" she asks.
"Why does everyone keep asking me that?" I grumble.
"Boy's not leaving you alone" she whispers.
"Yeah! It's so annoying. Do you know why?"
Danielle chuckles "How about you ask your brother when we get out of here."
For what feels like the billionth time today, I frown in confusion. Why would Joey know? And why is Danielle laughing.
A faint bell sounds, indicating it is time to head to dinner. We all hurriedly rush out of the tunnel into the lounge. I blink a few times, my eyes adjusting to the light. An arm drapes around me, and ushers me out of the room
"Let's go get some dinner" Anton offers.
I hear Danielle laugh again from behind us. Abel, Freddie and one of the older boys stay behind to move the desk back into place. When the four of us reach the hallway leading to the cafeteria, I notice Joey chatting to Steven and his friend Cassie.
Joey sees me and stops talking mid-sentence. Steven and Cassie follow his gaze and eye the group of us from the tunnel. They make their way over and Joey chastises
"What in the world Kelly? Why are you all dirty?" He begins brushing some dust off my shirt. I only now notice how filthy we all are from our adventure in the tunnel. The nuns are not going to be happy when they see the laundry.
"Uhhhh."
"Is this blood?" Joey asks. His head snaps towards Anton "Did you do this?" he hisses.
"It's not his fault Cole" I state. "I ran into Anton on the playground. Besides, it's a small cut, not a big deal. I washed it and Anton put some disinfectant on it."
"Wait" Steven speaks. "Anton put disinfectant on you?"
I nod as Anton's face flushes. He mumbles "I'll see you later Kelly." I don't think I have ever seen someone away so fast without it being considered running.
A hand grabs my chin and turns me towards my brother. Joey asks me emotionlessly "Where did Anton put disinfectant on you?"
I pull my shirt color revealing the cut between my shoulder and chest. "Around here" I motion around the area.
Joey yanks my shirt back in place "Kelly, you don't do that."
"What?"
"Don't let boys touch under your shirt."
"Why? The nurse does when she checks our heartbeat during checkups."
"That's different, she's a doctor. Don't let anymore boys touch you there, okay?"
"Why not?" I ask.
Cassie, Steven, Danielle and the older boy begin laughing. Why?! I honestly don't know what is so funny! Joey pinches the bridge of his nose in frustration
"You'll understand when you're older."
"Why don't you tell me?"
"I…uh…I" Joey struggles. He pauses and thinks of an answer. "Boys like to touch under girl's shirts when they get older and the boy and girl are…playing."
"Playing what?"
"Uh" Joey mutters as the other teens begin laughing louder. "It's a grown up game."
"Cole, I'm not a baby. You can tell me."
"I really don't want to."
"But…" I begin to argue.
"No Kelly" Joey snaps.
"Cole" Cassie giggles. "You really haven't explained any of that to her yet?"
"Why is it my job?" he shoots back.
Steven snickers "She's your sister."
"She's also eight, don't I get to push it back a few more years?"
"Cole" I ask pleadingly, embarrassed at being laughed about. "Please?"
"I…Kelly I…" Joey groans. "I'll tell you everything about that eventually okay?...Or the school will…probably the school. But for now…you just need to know that boys like touching girls a bit lower than the area Anton was touching you when the boy has a crush on the girl."
"Why?"
Steven answers amused "Because it's fun."
Joey shoots his friend a glare. Steven only begins laughing again, joined by Cassie.
"So is that why Anton was breathing heavier when he touched me there?" I ask.
"Ah, damn it" Joey grumbles, burying his face into his hands. "Yes, it is. He probably likes you."
"Oh yeah he does" Danielle chimes in. "Along with half the boy's in her class and mine."
"No they don't" I dispute.
"Yes they do" Danielle claims. "What do you think Nico?"
The older boy, Nico apparently, smirks "Yeah."
"You're wrong" I argue. "None of the boys have a crush on me."
"Oh they so do."
Joey interrupts, "Everyone just go to dinner. I'm going to talk to Kelly alone."
"Have fun" Cassie snickers as she and the others walk into the cafeteria. Cassie is the last to reach the door, before walking in she turns and winks at Joey. Then disappears.
Joey smirks for a second at the door, then turns to me and frowns. "You can be so embarrassing sometimes, you know that?"
"Well, I'm sorry" I sneer sarcastically. "But they are wrong."
"So Anton breathed heavier when he touched you? What else did he do?"
"I don't know."
"Did he smile a lot?"
"Uh…I guess."
"Put his arm around you."
"Well yeah…but so did Freddie and Abel!"
"Doesn't help your case Jasmine. That only strengthens mine. Did the three of them try to impress you in any way?"
"Maybe."
"Did they get jealous when you were talking to another boy besides them?"
"I don't know."
"Did they not look happy?"
"Well…" I falter. Crap. I'm beginning to see my defeat. Anton's compliment from earlier pops into my head, making me blush. I bite my lip, thinking over my new revelation.
Joey inquires "Let me guess. By your expression, I'm assuming one of them said something."
"Anton…he…he called me pretty." My blush deepens as I look away from my brother, embarrassed for so many reasons.
Knowing he won, Joey smirks "You're dumb."
"Well at least I'm pretty" I mumble begrudgingly.
Joey tries, but fails at holding back a laugh. The he turns a bit serious again, "How about you go try and wash off a bit before eating. You have dirt all over you."
I look over my gross arms and legs. My clothes are only lightly stained, nothing that won't come out in the wash, for the most part I'm only covered in dust and grime. "No need" I tell Joey as I peak around the hall to make sure we are alone. The dirt and dust begin to tingle on my skin and clothes as I make it slowly fall off of me. I've gotten quite good at this technique with my powers. Now if only I figure out how to get rid of stains.
A hand squeezes he arm and suddenly I am face to face with Joey. He looks furious. "What are you doing?" he hisses.
I gulp, "What…I…What?"
"Did you just use your powers?"
"Yea…Yeah."
Joey closes his eyes, and harshly runs his hand not holding me with through his hair. "How often do you do this?"
"What?" I question nervously.
"How often do you use your powers Jasmine!?" he snaps, opening his angry eyes.
"I…I don't know. Every so often. Maybe a couple times a day...only when I am alone though. Nobody has ever seen me."
"No more" Joey commands.
"But…"
"I said no more."
"Why?"
"Because they aren't good Jasmine" Joey states harshly. "They are just a way for Daniel to cause more destruction, you saw it at the villa. Don't use your powers Jasmine, they're bad."
I bite my lip, thinking over what Joey just told me. I guess he is right, but…I like my abilities. Mine aren't like Joey's or Daniel's. Besides, I don't feell as if I use mine in bad ways; just easy stuff like cleaning my room. But Joey's right, if my powers came from Daniel…I probably shouldn't use them.
"Okay" I whisper.
"Good" Joey snaps, standing to full height. Without giving me a second look, he storms into the cafeteria, leaving me in his wake.
I take a deep breath and stare at the fallen dirt and dust at my feet; the tunnel adventure feeling so long ago. I guess making the dirt fall was the last time I'll ever use my powers. It's weird thinking that. I truly don't hate my powers, not like Joey does. They have always been there, a big part of my life. Letting them go…it doesn't feel right.
Joey's POV
10:10 PM August 1st 1998, Joey and Steven's Room
"He's such an Oasch!" Steven grumbles from his desk. "I hate him. Who does he think he is? I get one question wrong and…urg! Then the entire class laughed! I swear one day…"
"Just ignore them Steve" I tell him, only half listening. I am laying on my bed, playing with my tension wrench. Steven is working on his homework, I already finished mine. "Todd has a brain the size of a grape, nobody actually believes anything he says."
"I can't stand it anymore!" my roommate growls. "It's been going on for weeks, ever since Sister Maya announced that I was getting bumped up a grade in math and literature."
"Yeah, that was kind of a flop on her part."
"Now Todd and his stupid followers won't leave me alone!"
"They're just jealous."
"Why don't you get made fun of this much?" Steven accuses. "You and Kelly have skipped multiple grades, yet nobody gives you grief about it."
I roll my eyes, "They do; Kelly and I just don't care. We heard worse before we came to this place; any insults some idiot kids come up with are nothing. After everyone figured out we weren't going to react in the way they wanted, they laid off."
"I don't remember any of that" Steven turns to look at me from his chair.
I shrug, "It didn't go on for too long. Besides, my classmates find me funny and Kelly doesn't like to draw attention to herself during class. The nuns don't highlight us as much as Sister Maya does you. Kelly and I don't bother our classmates enough for them to care that we are there."
Steven becomes a bit miffed, "Neither do I!"
"Yeah, but even you have said that you're Sister Maya's favorite. That bothers people."
"It's not like I'm trying to be."
"That makes it worse" I snort. "Just stay out of the limelight, things will get better."
Steven simmers for a while, "It's not fair. I'm smart so now Todd hates me. He's going to make my life miserable."
"Todd hate's you because you spilled to Cassie about him kissing Clara and Emley."
"I didn't know she would tell both of them!"
"Girls talk! What did you expect? Cassie friend's with like…everybody in the school. She was just trying to protect Emley and Clara. You're the one who was being a little sneak and spying on Todd, I would be mad too if I were him."
Steven's mouth drops open, "I'm not a sneak!"
I sit up and roll my eyes at him. "Please. You are known in school as the gossip, the one who is in everybody's business. As a friend, I'm telling, stop prying into people's personal lives."
"I do not pry!"
"Yes you do, and you're damn good at it. But I'm telling you, it will get you in trouble if you are not careful. So either stop…or make a career out of it."
A slight smirk appears on my roommate's face at the inside joke. He then turns serious again and asks "Who the hell do I spy on?"
"For one Todd."
Steven huffs, "Besides him."
"You were the first to know about Sister Jana getting fired."
"That's not spying! That's being well informed."
"The school wasn't going to tell us about that until the end of the year" I reason. "You're lucky they didn't have any proof that you were the person who told everybody. Why were you prying into the nun's lives anyway? You have a crush or something?"
"Shut up!" Steven snaps, before changing the subject. "Besides the nuns, whose life do I pry into?" I raise an eyebrow at Steven and give a look. After a moment, Steven's face grows grim, "I haven't asked you anything in almost a year."
"Yeah, because I pinned you to a wall and threatened you."
"I stopped, okay?" Steven snips.
We remain silent for a while. This has been a forbidden topic between us. Steven and I never actually discussed that day, instead it was easier to pretend it never happened. Our friends always tried to talk to us about it, but Steven and I would blow them off. Life soon went back to normal, and I thought it would be the end of Steven's prying. And it was…until today.
Something feels off about today. Ever since I've woken up…it's felt strange. The school seems homier, the food tastes better, I like the people more than usual. But there is a melancholy feel. As if everything is too good to be true. It's a good day…but it will end tomorrow.
Steven breaks the tension "Why won't you tell me anything? I've told you everything about my past. My mom, my dad, where I grew up. I don't even know where you are from."
"Why do you want to know? Why is having information so important to you?"
"Because my dad never told me anything and now he's in jail!"
I pause, speechless.
"Yeah, when you first came here I was only trying to snoop because you were a new face and were a lot more interesting than any of the other kids here. But…then you became my closest friend, and friends worry about each other. You never tell me, or Cassie, or Dyke, or any of our friends about what happened to you and Kelly before you came here. The little bit we do know…we worry about you two. We see how angry you get when you talk about your past. Why won't you tell us anything? What happened that was so bad, that you had to run away? Why do you fight so hard to keep your past a secret? Secrets aren't the answer Cole, they only end up hurting people. My dad kept secrets my entire life; and now look where he is. I don't want that to happen to you!"
I remain silent for what feels like hours before I stumble "It's none of your business."
"You're my friend, I want to help" Steven almost pleads. "We've lived in the same room for two years; you can trust me. If your secret is something bad, tell me. It's obviously affecting you, talk about it. If not with me, then someone."
"You sound like the nuns" I scoff.
"Maybe you should listen to them! Huh? Ever think they may be right?"
"It's not that easy Steven. I…I'm not…"
Urg! How do I explain this to him? Just say 'I'm not like you. I'm not a person, I'm a weapon. Some runaway tool that didn't want to be used anymore.' I can't tell him about Daniel, about the villa, about my family's powers. I don't care what he or the nuns say, that secret is going to stay hidden.
But Steven's right. He has been very open with me, even though I have not offered the same curtesy. The last thing I ever expected when coming to the orphanage, was making a friend. Even with all of his snooping, Steven has been more than supportive to me. He's helped me with Jasmine, fitting in with people, learning how to take care of myself, and so much more. I can feel how genuine Steven's emotions are when he talks. Everything he has said to me so far has been true. He honestly cares about me as a friend, the worry he has is real.
But I can't tell him the truth. I just can't. What would he think? Would he change his mind about Jasmine and I? If he told the nuns, they would probably send Jasmine and I back. I mean….we aren't real people. We're property. They would just be giving Daniel back his belongings. Would they tell him about James with the Graysons?
For some reason my heart does a flip when I think that. I want it to stop. I told myself, the baby is on his own. How come whenever I think of him, I feel such disgust at myself? I have no ties to him anymore. He's better off now anyways. It's time to for me to stop caring.
A knock on the door pulls me out of my thoughts. I vaguely hear Steven hesitantly call for the person to enter.
Sister Genevieve cheerily enters our room. Today she seems happier than usual…or more excited. She eagerly tells me "Cole, I need you to come with me."
"Wha…Why?" I ask, still regaining focus on the present.
The nun's smile grows even wider, "Just come! It's a surprise!"
Okay, she is acting strange. Steven and I exchange confused looks before I tell her "Okay, just let me put on some shoes."
"Oh yes dear" she cheers. "I'll be in the hall with Kelly." With that, Sister Genevieve takes a step into the hall and closes the door.
Jasmine's here? What's going on? I contemplate the strange behavior of the nun as I put on my sneakers. I get up and walk to the door. Before I turn the handle, something stops me. I know what it is.
"Florence" I state, my voice monotone.
"What?" Steven asks, confused from where he is sitting.
I take a deep breath and turn to my friend. Looking him the eye I calmly repeat "I'm from Florence."
Steven stares at me, his face expressionless. That is how I leave him. Sitting at his desk in complete shock that I willingly gave him information about myself. When I step into the hall, Sister Genevieve is gushing over me immediately.
"Oh, good you're here. I'm so excited, you two will be so happy when I show you your surprise!"
Jasmine is standing next to the nun with a similar confused expression as mine. She is wearing a pair of jeans and a blue shirt; similar outfit to my own. Strange, girls usually wear dresses. The weird feeling I had about today resurfaces. Something is just off.
Sister Genevieve begins skipping away, Jasmine and I hesitantly follow her. I look over to Jasmine and give her a quiz filled expression, but she merely shrugs. I guess she is just as clueless as I am about the nun's unusual behavior.
Eventually the three of us make our way the main offices. My stomach churns unsettlingly. Weird, I never feel this way walking into this area, even when I'm in trouble. Without even knocking first (another oddity) Sister Genevieve walks right into Minister Noah's office.
"Kelly! Cole! Come in, come in" Minister Noah's voice calls out to us. "Come sit down, we have some news to share with you."
Jasmine and I exchange one more hesitant glance, then walk into the room. Sister Genevieve and Minister Noah are standing behind the desk with huge grins on their faces. Sister Maya is rushing around the room, looking through the filing cabinets, also wearing a big smile. The minister gestures to a couple of chairs for us to sit in.
After Jasmine and I settle in, Sister Genevieve beams "Now, you two remember when I told you two that we would try and find you a home that would accommodate both of you?"
"You mean about getting adopted?" I ask. "Yeah."
"Well" the nuns giggles. "We've found it."
My eyebrows raise, "What?" I was not expecting this. It has never even crossed my mind that Jasmine and I would get adopted.
Minister Noah explains "A young man came in and offered to take you both in, you're being adopted."
My jaw drops open. I can't even comprehend what he just said. Who in the world are they giving us to? Nobody is in the room besides the nuns, minister, Jasmine and I. "Where is our…adoptive parent?" I ask unsteadily.
Sister Genevieve smiles and gestures to the door behind me. Slowly I turn and see a figure in the doorway.
My heart stops, my throat goes dry, fear spikes. Standing before me is my worst nightmare.
Daniel.
