He Who Descends

JPOV

I searched Quaker all day but couldn't find any sign of Carlisle and at the mention of the Head Nurse, all the doctors became extremely tight-lipped.

I returned, thoroughly disappointed in myself, to Mayflower and helped Rosa and Rosalie with the evening medication.

"How was your Quaker adventure, Mr Whitlock?" a voice erupted from behind me as I injected a little girl who was tied to her crib.

I balled my free hand into a fist. 'Not this tart again,' I thought to myself, not feeling up to dealing with her arrogant attitude.

"Just fine, no thanks to you," I turned and eyed her.

"I just thought I should let you know, Dr Madden wants to see you in his office," she snorted, "I think word of your 'relationship' with certain patients got to him. I wouldn't keep him waiting."

I glared daggers at her and disposed of the syringe before heading off to Dr Madden's office.

Once I arrived in administration, I told the lady from my first day who sat behind the desk I needed to see the good doctor. She telephoned Dr Madden's office and then told me to go through.

I found the door with the brass sign;

Dr James Madden

I knocked twice and waited.

"Come in," a deep voice ordered.

I opened the door and stepped into Dr Madden's office. It was so classy with deep crimson wall-paper and a similar coloured thick, fluffy carpet. There were portraits of famous manufacturers and inventors of modern medical devices. There were deep violet drapes covering the windows and making the room quite dark except the light from the oil lamp on his desk.

"Have a seat, Mr Whitlock," the man behind the desk motioned to a red velvet armchair in front of the desk. I sat down and studied him.

He had long, dirty blonde hair tied back in a pony tail and the most piercing blue eyes. He was wearing a collared shirt with a royal purple cravat and a white coat.

"Matron Evenson tells me you've been acting somewhat… inappropriately towards a particular patient. So much so that," he sighed, "she felt she needed to relocate this patient to protect them from you. I'm sure you know the patient I'm referring to."

"Look, whatever she told you, it's not true. I wasn't doing anything even remotely inappropriate," I argued. What the hell evil webs had that tart spun?

"Look, I'm willing to let this episode slide. All I require is to move you to Quaker and put you on night shift. And don't go looking for trouble."

"I can't guarantee I won't," I said. "I'm honestly concerned about what she's done with him."

"Jasper, if you are willing to let this go, I'll have everyone on campus recognise you as a nurse," he offered.

My heart panged. There was nothing I wanted more than professional recognition, but Carlisle… No, Carlisle was a human being and he needed me. I was not going to let him down over something as stupid as a title.

"No," I shook my head.

"Jasper, please don't make me fire you, you honestly seem like a nice young man. And I understand that there are just some people on this earth who bring out our personal demons," he said, acting sympathetic. But I could see through it. That 'Head Nurse', she was in on something, some scam, and so was Dr Madden. And possibly, whichever doctor she'd handed Carlisle over to. "But we need to move past these situations and stay away from these people and everything will be fine."

I couldn't get myself fired, then I would be no good to Carlisle. I had to fool him into thinking I would give in.

"You really won't tell anyone. No other hospitals, not the police or anything?" I asked, trying to sound like I'd done something serious.

"Not a chance. Jasper, I understand we all have… carnal urges and in a place like this, it's hard to find an adult to fulfil them," James smiled creepily. It almost made me nauseous. "Not a word to anyone else and you can be what you've always wanted; a nurse."

"So, I'll really be a nurse?"

"Of course, I don't lie," he smirked. "So, leave the past in the past. Agreed?"

"Deal," I nodded.

"Well, Nurse Whitlock, it's been a pleasure doing business with you. Have a nice evening. Remember, Quaker, seven pm from now on," he reminded me.

"Right," I nodded, standing. "Have a good night." I left the room and headed back to Independence.

I tossed and turned the whole night. All I could think of was that Carlisle wasn't safe. He wasn't with people who wouldn't hurt him. He wasn't with me.
