The 4th of July!
When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. - Psalm 56:3
Parties! Fireworks! And Loud Noise! This is what Natasha was going to have to deal with for the remainder of the evening. Thanks too nun-other then... Tony Stark. He had so kindly dragged her and Steve to the Avengers Tower for his Annual '4th of July Party'. Steve hadn't minded so much, or, at least he hadn't acted like he had minded. Natasha figured it was because he is a gentleman and nice.
Natasha however wasn't nearly as nice to start with and would rather be training or staying at Clint's home. They had always spent the 4th there and it is where she would have preferred to be.
Not her luck.
Instead she was stuck here in a skyscraper with a bunch of people she rather not be nice to and to make things worse the sun was almost gone and that means only one thing… Fireworks! With everything that has happened to her in the past Natasha was not a fan of fireworks. It was stupid a thing but thats how it was.
"Come on Nat." Steve pleaded cooly with her. He playfully tapped her shoulder with a glass of wine. They were sitting at the bar people shuffled around behind them chattering away at nothing in particular.
Blowing out through her lips Natasha turned her eye's to Steve's grey-blue ones.
"You know how Tony is." he said glancing over his should and toward the man himself. Tony was talking with a bunch of people Steve didn't recognize he looked to be enjoying himself.
Natasha had followed his gaze, "I still rather not be here." She tried to keep here face hard and annoyed looking but, Steve's pleading almost puppy like eye's and gentle smile literally forced her lips to turn up even if it was against her will. Steve nodded to himself, "See its not so hard." he mocked. Grinning more a small laugh escaped Natasha's lips, "Just wait till tomorrow when we're back home at HQ and training. Be afraid Mr. Captain America." Now Steve laughed.
"I'm very afraid." Handing her a glass of wine they tapped edges, "To Bravery." Natasha said, "Goodness knows we all need it when in the hands of Tony Stark."
The night went on and before she knew it the sun had left and the sky was dark, not even the moon rose to meet the dark sky and dancing stars. Steve had stayed close. Though ocasunally he was picked up into a conversation with different people around the room.
Clint wasn't anywhere in sight and Natasha knew he was back home but, she wished he was here.
"Everyone." Tony's voice called around the room making everything grew quiet. Tony stood on the table looking over the room full of people, "I'd like to thank you all for coming. But lets be honest the only reason you came is not because I'm the coolest Avenger or that I'm a billionaire." He paused. Natasha rolled her eye's, "Well maybe that did have something to do with it. But the real reason is because who has a better view of the fourth of July fireworks then Avenger tower!" His voice grow until he was practically yelling across the room. A cheer rose up and for a moment everything was far to loud.
'here we go.' Natasha thought. slipping her phone out of her back pocket she pressed speed dial and waited as the line on the other end rang. Tony was giving a form of Fourth of July speech though Natasha wasn't paying any attention. Seven rings in and the line went dead. Silently she scolded Clint she new what he was doing. Probably setting up fireworks with his kids and having a grand time away from all the commotion of crazy people and their even crazier host here in the Avengers Tower.
Minutes passed and before she new it everyone was finding a place to watch the fireworks. Standing by the windows people pressed themselves against the glass watching the sky. Iron Man himself appeared outside the windows and he flew off across the city.
For a long moment they all waited. Then… A flash of color ripped through the night sky taring at the darkness followed by a loud clash! The fireworks had started. Now its not that Natasha hated fireworks its just that she didn't particularly like them. Most of the time she was fine sitting and watching them from a distance that never seemed to bothered her. But usually it was Clints fireworks she was watching. His friendly, fun, home made fireworks.
Another splash of Red, White, and Blue spilt out across the sky followed by its roar of power!
Natasha's heart skipped. Her breath sticking in her throat, "calm," she breathed to herself. To many people to start this. Her eye's were darting around looking for Steve but he was no where in sight. Growling in frustration, the fireworks grew lauder in her ears the flashes of red streaking stains into her mind. Backing away from the crowed of people. She tried again to calm herself. Deep breaths. Deep breaths. No use her heart rate was pounding and the idea of breathing, of air filling her lungs was not even a comprehendible thought.
Her eye's started to burn, the fresh gleam of tears sparkling in the low light.
"Please," she whispered, "Not here." This is why she didn't want to come in the first part. It hand't happend for a long time but it was always a possibleity for one of her attacks to take her and when she was with Clint she knew that he knew what to do. But this was different. Steve knew about her attacks she had told him once after what happened with SHIELD and HIDRA. Though he had never witnessed one before but still, he had a way about calming her that she hadn't figured out quiet yet.
So where was he?
Glancing around the room from her corner near a hallway she finally found him. He was standing a little away from the the rest of the crowd watching the fireworks and talking on his cell.
Another laud Bang! Her heart skipped again and a tear found its way down her cheek. "Steve." she whispered. Please look over here she silently pleaded with him. To her luck he did. The second he saw her, his eye's turned full of concern. Leaving his spot from watching the 'party in the sky' Tony would say and making his way to her closing his cell as he walked.
"Natasha?" He spoke softly. The look of fear in her eye's told him everything. Gently he guided her away from the party and into a small, dark room at the end of the hall furthest from the main room full of people. Locking the door behind him he quickly closed the shads from the red flashes of light. More lights roared into the sky and with it Natasha dropped to the ground her hands covering her ears.
Steve rushed to her side. Poor thing, he thought.
"Easy Nat." He put his arms around her and hugged her close, "it's alright their just fireworks." He whispered. Natasha shook her head and said in a ghost of a whisper, "I know. It's its stupid. I just-" another bang filled the world around them cutting her from her train of thought. She shivered against Steve keeping hold of his shirt as though she was afraid he would leave.
"Clint." Steve heard her whisper.
"He's on his way I thought you might need him." He whispered gently by her ear. He held her for the next few minutes. Not letting go or shifting positions. Natasha sank deeper against him and her breathing only got worse and worse with each passing rocket of fire that sprang into the sky. Tears ran down her cheeks not because she was afraid but because she couldn't stop the fear that filled her. She had no control. It only gets worse before it gets better. She held tight to Steve the only light in the room coming from the window. She kept her eyes closed. The door creaked the sound of someone unlocking it filling the small room. Panic racked Natasha's body, the thought of someone walking in on them would only make things worse. The door opened and closed, Natasha didn't look to see who it was but she already knew. Relief filled her as Clint gently knelt down beside her. Stroking her hair Clint took Natasha from Steve's arms nodding his thanks. Picking Natasha up Clint carried her to the darkest corner of the room. Setting her against the wall she instantly pulled her knees to her chest. Clint sat next to her and held her close and protectively to him.
Steve took a seat next to Natasha as well and gently rubbed her shoulder.
They were quiet. Natasha's shivering started to slow and her breathing was almost normal.
"That my Girl." Clint whispered into her ear. The fireworks went on to reck havoc across the sky for an entire hour. It took a half hour longer for Natasha to settle down enough to be convinced that they were over.
"Better?" Steve asked the concern unwilling to leave his eyes.
"Yeah." She managed to say still in the safety of their arms. Clint waited another minute or so before standing up and pulling Natasha to her feet. Steve and Clint stood close to her both wanting to make sure she was going to be okay. Taking a deep breath, "I'm sorry." She said not meeting either of their eyes. Steve spoke first,"don't be it wasn't your fault."
"Yeah well, I ruined the night for you." But then she added, "for both of you."
"Na, we weren't going to do anything Special tonight anyways." Clint said, "one of our mares just had a colt and fireworks wouldn't have ended well." He smiled, giving her a kiss on the four head.
"You'll be alright?" He asked. Natasha nodded.
"Alright well I'm only a phone call away. I have to get going." Clint said his voice slightly pained at the thought of leaving her.
"Thanks Clint." Natasha said. He pulled her into a huge and whispered so only she would hear, "Steve will keep you safe." She nodded against his chest. With though's words he disappeared back to his wife and kids. Leaving Natasha and Steve alone in the dark room. Tears stained Natasha cheeks the gentle glow of the city lights making them shine ever do slightly.
"I guess we better get out their before Tony starts to wonder." Natasha said still not meeting his eyes. She started to leave when, Steve caught her arm to stop her.
"Natasha if this happens again you can come and find me or call. Anytime I don't mind." His last words took Natasha by surprise and she finally met his eyes.
"I rather you be alright then leave you and stay at some party." Tilting his head he added playfully, "even if it is Iron Mans party." Natasha relaxed and smiled at him.
"Thank you," she said truly touched.
"Happy 4th of July." With that they walked out to the crowed of people and crazy songs that wrecked havoc on the Avengers Tower and would continue to wreck havoc until the very early morning hours. There was never an end to a part hosted by Tony Stark.
The end.
Hope you enjoyed and please leave me a review if you all would like another chapter the next holiday.
