Sharon didn't lose her temper, especially when it came to her kids. However, her temper was bubbling very near the surface with every step she took when she saw Andy pacing in front of her daughter, arms crossed over his chest, as she entered the scene she was called to for a missing cop.
The night club was an eighteen and older club, but as far as Sharon knew Riley was staying the night with Monica. Who, Sharon would bet, was probably somewhere in this club as well. Riley was not even wearing the same clothes she left the house in, in fact they didn't look like any clothes Riley had in her closet. She wore a crop top that tied around her neck and a waist high short shorts that still left skin on her stomach showing and it just barely covered her butt with very high heels.
Sharon could tell that Andy was barely controlling his own temper. Every member of Major Crimes was prepared for a mother/daughter blow up, if Andy Flynn's head didn't explode first.
The moment the cops arrived Riley soon-to-be Raydor knew she was royally screwed. Technically she wasn't breaking the law, but she didn't tell her mother what she was doing. If she was lucky, she could get away with riding home with Monica before anyone even saw her. However Riley wasn't lucky.
The moment Julio and Provenza arrived, Riley knew she had two choices. She could wait to be found while they interview people, or she could just have gone ahead and sell herself out. The second seemed like a better idea.
The look on Provenza's face as she slowly approached, not to mention his sighed ye gods as she pulled her borrowed leather jacket a little tighter around her to cover the little too much skin that was showing, verified that Riley was extremely screwed. It didn't do much good and the pervert who whistled at her as she went also was probably a strike against her, but she was already preparing herself for hell.
"Riley," Sharon nearly hissed in a tone that sounded so calm and dangerous the girl wanted to disappear into the wall she was leaning against. "You have thirty seconds."
Sharon's green eyes were flickering with anger and Riley felt the knot in her throat tighten. She didn't have an excuse, she already knew that. She had scared her mother.
"I-I-I'm sorry," she mumbled, tears building in her eyes. Immediately she hated herself for being so weepy.
Sharon rubbed her forehead before shaking her head. "Congratulations Riley. You're officially grounded. You are either attached to my or Andy's hip until I say otherwise. Do you understand?"
Riley bit her lip as it trembled, but tears were still pricking at her eyes. She quickly wiped them away as Sharon beckoned her to follow behind her.
She felt stupid. She was crying like a scolded toddler and she couldn't stop herself. Rusty was going to never let her live this down if Sharon and Andy decided to let her live. In all her time with Sharon she had never seen her so mad at one of them before. This must be the infamous Darth Raydor that Andy would sometimes tease her about.
Quickly she found herself wiping her eyes again as Sharon did her police thing. All Riley wanted to do was through her arms around her mother's neck and tell her how sorry she was for not telling her. She didn't lie exactly, just didn't mention staying the night with Monica would also include an eighteen and up club.
"You're lucky," Commander McGinnis commented to Riley, pulling her out of her self-loathing long enough for a surprised glare. She had met the woman a time or two before, but Riley could never help but be in complete awe of her. It was probably a lot of the fact she reminded her of Sharon; a powerful woman taking easy control of extremely intense situations. Immediately the woman had her attention and respect.
However, lucky was not a term Riley would use in her current situation. She could feel Sharon watching them as Riley raised her brow at the other woman.
"My officer was in here because she was young, thin, and blonde. The woman taken from this club had the same characteristics you do. It could have been you."
McGinnis walked away, leaving Riley feeling even smaller than she had felt moments ago. She turned and looked at Sharon who didn't look as angry anymore, instead there was a glimpse of the terror that lingered instead.
"Let's go," Sharon said quietly. Normally her hand would fall on Riley's shoulder or back as they walked, but it didn't this time. Instead she just started moving expecting Riley's obedience. She hung her head and barely glanced up at Andy as she past. He too looked like he had just pulled her from the jaws of death instead of a night club.
Silence hung heavy around them as Sharon drove. The tension was high and Riley was frustrated at the tears that just seemed to keep falling as soon as she wiped them away. She glanced at her mother's profile. Her eyes were glued to the road which were fairly empty at two-thirty in the morning.
"I'm really sorry." The voice was barely more than a whisper, but Sharon took a deep breath at the honest words spoken.
After another long moment, one of Sharon's hands moved off the steering wheel and took ahold of Riley's on the console. "Do you know how easily it could have been you tonight? You could have been taken, and I would have no idea until sometimes tomorrow. Even then I would have no idea where to start looking. Riley..." Sharon sighed and squeezed her daughter's hand as she kept her eyes on the road. Tears were starting her choke her as well as the realization became too much for her. Her children's luck had been far from ideal, but this time around her kid was spared. "I wish you would have at least told me what you were doing tonight."
At that Riley scoffed. "You wouldn't have let me go then," she mumbled.
That was probably true, but Sharon was also trying to come to terms with her youngest children, the children that she has only had for about three years now, were now adults. She felt like there was no time for her to prepare for this. Though she never got to cradle them in her arms as infants, teach them to walk and talk as toddlers, or even kiss the scraped knees as children, they were her babies that she wanted to keep safe. A large part of that was because of their hard history, but she knew it ran deeper than that.
Riley and Rusty were eighteen now. They were going to college soon and all Sharon could do was hope they could make the proper choices now because technically she couldn't stop them. They would listen to her and obey, but now it was becoming more important to make their own decisions. Sharon had to trust that they would make safe ones.
Even tonight Riley wasn't doing anything wrong, per se, but Sharon just wished she would have told her where she was going.
"I wouldn't have liked you going, but I can't stop you," Sharon replied, her voice quiet in contemplation. She was glad to have already pulled into the LAPD parking garage because this was one of those conversations she wanted to look into her daughter's eye and have. A lot of times watching Riley and Rusty's reactions was the only way Sharon could tell how they were truly feeling. Every thought they had seemed very visible behind their matching blue eyes.
She pulled into her parking space and turned to her daughter. Riley was already looking at her expectantly. Before Sharon could even say a word Riley glanced down at her lap and unbuckled her seat belt. The door was open and she was out of the car in an instant.
Sharon sighed, assuming this meant Riley was going to try and avoid whatever Sharon had to say. But as she opened her own door she was surprised when Riley met her with a hug.
The girl tucked her face against her mother's neck wrapped her arms around Sharon as she squeezed her eyes shut. Instantly Sharon returned the hug, holding her daughter tightly as she closed her own eyes. The knot in her throat was impossible to swallow as tears slid down her cheeks. When it came to her babies, she tended to be emotional.
Who was she kidding, Sharon Raydor had one of the most tender hearts most people have ever seen.
"I'm only mad-"
"Because you love me," Riley finished for her, her head not leaving Sharon's shoulder. "I know. And I think that's why I'm so mad at myself. I love you too, Mom."
With that, Sharon's heart burst. She held her daughter as tightly as she could. It was not only the first time Riley had ever actually told her she loved her with the actual words, but also the first time either of the twins had ever called her mom.
After several moments of sniffles and hugs, Sharon pulled away to look her daughter in the eye. She tried to look very serious when all she wanted to do was smile. "You're still grounded."
Riley sighed as Andy's car pulled in next to Sharon's.
As he stepped out of his vehicle he gave them both odd looks. Their eyes were bloodshot and Riley was tucked safely under Sharon's arm. On his drive over he couldn't help but feel awful for the way he reacted when he saw Riley standing there next to Provenza when he arrived. His temper flared and she already looked like a beat puppy when he approached. Still, it didn't keep him from immediately lashing out at her, demanding to know why she was there and who she was there with. He was also the one that pulled out his phone and called Sharon to inform her that he daughter was at the scene of a crime.
Now, he was just glad she was okay. Riley was his little girl and he tended to spoil her a bit every now and then. When Ricky came home, Riley stuck close to him, not hiding her complete distress over her soon to be brother's attitude toward Rusty and herself. Normally he let Sharon deal with her own kids in her own time, but after seeing Ricky slide harsh comments the twins' way not once but twice in his presence he confronted Sharon.
Of course she handled it. She wasn't going to ignore it. Ricky had been the youngest for a long time and suddenly he had two new siblings that he was going to have to get used to. Not to mention his father seemed to be playing his usual manipulative games. Yet Ricky's last night there, they all had dinner together. He remembered Sharon's happy tone when she called him that night. Ricky had asked Rusty what family meant to him which he gave the beautiful answer of people who will love each other no matter what. Then Ricky looked to Riley and asked what home meant to her. Blue eyes darted to Sharon, then to Rusty, before finally landing on Ricky again. Home to Riley was wherever her family was, wherever Sharon and Rusty could be found and now Ricky and Emily too.
Andy knew that Riley didn't trust men easily. It had taken a long time for her to get used to any man and in many way Andy was no exception. But now he was her father. He was the one who was allowed to get mad when she did something stupid and the one she would call when she needed help.
He was also the one who tended to go easy on her with punishments.
"She's grounded, mister," Sharon reminded him lightly as she saw the shimmer of weakness in his eyes.
"As she should be," he replied easily. He rubbed the back of his neck as he shifted on his feet. "I'm sorry I lost my temper, Rye."
With that Riley easily moved into his arms and hugged him tightly. She was still upset that she had upset her parents as much as she had. Andy getting angry with her was the least of her worries when she knew she deserved it.
The three of them headed into the building together.
