Author's Note: Sorry for the wait. Though it wasn't as long as the last one. :P As usual I was too lazy to proof-read(also pretty sure I have pink-eye and it hurts to read) so any mistakes are mine.

Chapter Seven

"Jackson?" Jane suggested from her perch at the end of their bed, onesie in hand in mid-fold.

"Dashiell?"

"Really, Maura?" Jane looked up from the tiny clothes she was folding to her girlfriend who was feeding a hungry infant.

Maura looked up from the baby's face to look at Jane in confusion. Jane set down the little shirt she had been folding (apparently having a small child and an infant meant doing more laundry) and placed a hand out on a jutted hip. "Dashiell?" She repeated the name in a condescending tone.

"Like after Dashiell Hammet…" When this got no verbal response from Jane, she further explained: "He was an American author who wrote hard-boiled detective novels."

Jane made an exaggerated gesture with her hands as she spoke, "Oh, that Dashiell." She replied sardonically.

Maura rolled her eyes at Jane before looking back at the nameless baby. "Honestly, Jane as a detective I thought you would have known that. His books are quite riveting. We could call the baby Dash. For short."

Jane smirked. "Korsak is the one who reads all the detective books, and no. The poor kid will get made fun of."

"Fine…" Maura said with a resigned sigh as she tickled the baby's cheek to suckle more.

It had been six days since Baby John Doe had come to stay with them, and eight since Callie had come into their lives. It started off pretty hectic at first, what with the baby's feeding times and Callie's occasional nightmares. Both Jane and Maura were exhausted but these past couple of days had gone more smoothly as they both got the hang of things.

Angela had been a big help and much to Jane's dismay, had been dropping hints about grandbabies. Callie was still leery of Angela but was slowly coming around. It seemed that the only people she truly trusted were Jane and Maura. She was much more herself around the two women.

Baby clothes and supplies had been purchased along the way and Tommy's old basinet was donated to Jane and Maura from Angela. She had put it in storage after moving into Maura's guesthouse and never took it out when she moved into Jane's old apartment.

Callie tried to be helpful with the baby but ultimately she could only take so much of his fussiness. He was pretty boring most of the time to her. At first when he would cry, Callie would get upset, thinking he was hurt.

Jane and Maura had to explain that crying was the baby's only way of communicating his needs. Eventually she began to understand and stopped worrying that something or someone was hurting him.

"We can't keep calling him 'The Baby." Maura finally said quietly, removing the bottle from his still puckered lips and wiping the dribble of milk from his chin with a bib before she placed it on her shoulder and gently maneuvered the baby to rest against it, careful to cradle his head to the side as she began to gently rub and pat his back in hopes of getting a burp out of him.

Jane sighed and sorted out the last bit of laundry. "I know, Maur." Picking up Callie's clothes, Jane moved to Maura's side of the bed where her girlfriend sat with the baby. She leaned down and placed a gentle kiss on the honey blonde's forehead and smiled down at her. "That's a good look on you." She commented quietly.

Maura smiled bashfully but replied, "What? Spit-up and formula?"

The detective chuckled, holding Callie's folded clothes closer. "Yeah, the mom look." Before Maura could comment on this, Jane moved toward the door. "I'm going to go check on Cal and put her clothes up." And she was out the door.

Jane moved down the hall and stopped at the guest room which had turned into Callie's room. The door was cracked and she could hear the little girl talking quietly. She couldn't quite make it out until she realized that Callie was trying to sound out words. The detective knocked on the door softly before entering. "Hey, dimples."

Callie looked up from the book in her lap as Jane entered. She was under her covers in the center of the big bed with her Sven doll. "Hi." She smiled bashfully and held the stuffed reindeer closer.

"What are you up to?" Jane asked as she began to put Callie's clothes up in the dresser.

The little girl looked down at the book in her lap and back up at Jane. "Readin' to Sven."

Jane smiled. "Is it a good book?" She asked as she put up the last of the clothes and came to sit on the edge of the bed next to Callie.

Callie nodded and closed the book and set it aside. "Mauwa has been teachin' me how to sound out words." The little girl smiled. "I wanted her to be proud of me sos maybe I won't have to go away." She looked down shyly, fiddling with the stuffed Sven in her lap.

"Oh dimples," Jane smiled sadly and scooted further onto the bed, bringing the pajama clad little girl in her lap and snuggling her close. "Maura is very proud of you." Jane murmured. "You are such a bright little girl and this is all very complicated, nothing you need to worry about. Okay?" She gave the little girl a squeeze.

"Okay." Callie replied with a sigh as she hugged Jane's middle.

Jane smiled and kissed the top of Callie's head. Just as she was about to get up she could hear her phone going off and then a moment later, Maura's. "Crap." She mumbled as gave Callie a quick squeeze before slipping out of the bed.

Maura appeared a few seconds later holding out Jane's ringing phone while answering her own.

"Rizzoli,"

"Isles,"

"Yeah okay. Be there soon."

"Okay, thank you. I'll be there as soon as I can." Maura hung up her phone and sighed. "Well I knew that break wouldn't last." She said running a hand through her hair.

Jane sighed as well. "I know. I'll call Ma so she can watch Callie and the baby." The detective said, looking back down at her phone and going through her contacts as she exited the room to go get dressed.

Maura entered further into the room and took a seat on the big bed where Callie sat watching her. "Jane and I have to go into work so Jane's mother is going to come sit with you, okay?"

Callie frowned. "Can't I come wiff you?"

Smiling sadly, Maura shook her head. "No, sweetie, I'm sorry. I promise we'll be back later today, okay?"

"Will you be back for a story?" The little girl asked hesitantly.

Maura smiled and pushed a strand of hair behind the little girl's ear. "Yes, I promise."

"Okay." Callie said quietly.

20 minutes later, Angela was knocking on the door and since Maura was the first one dressed, she answered the door, returning the hug that Angela gave her. "Thank you for coming Angela. I'm sorry this is so last minute."

Angela waved her off and walked further into the house, setting her things on the couch. "Nonsense, I'm happy to help." The elder Rizzoli said genuinely.

Maura smiled. "Thank you. Callie has already had breakfast and so has the baby but he'll probably get fussy and want more. There is formula in the fridge and if you need anything, please call."

"Maura, honey. Don't worry. I promise I've got it under control." Angela smiled knowingly at Maura.

Before Maura could reply, Jane was bounding down the hall, badge and phone in her hand. "Okay, I'm ready. Hi Ma." She leaned in and quickly kissed her mother on the cheek. "Maura tell you everything?"

Angela rolled her eyes. "Yes. Now go catch the bad guys." She practically shoved the two women out the door.

The entire drive to the crime scene was quiet, both women having a feeling of dread. Of course driving to a crime scene was never something to be happy about but this feeling was different from the usual feelings of quiet mourning for someone who had tragically lost their life, something was off.

The feeling only seemed to intensify as they pulled up near the Boston Harbor. The walked until they spotted the crime scene tape and the onlookers and police officers. Flashing their badges and slipping under the crime scene tape and into a large empty storage unit. Empty aside from the dead girl.

"What do we got, Frost?" Jane asked as she sidled up to her partner while Maura walked further into the unit and knelt down next to their victim.

Frost glanced once at the body and then back at Jane. "Dock workers opened this unit up this morning expecting it to be empty but instead they find her. No ID but there's something familiar about her." He inched a little closer to look down at the pale face and wide icy blue eyes which even in death still looked beautiful. "Korsak is talking to the workers."

Jane finally took that moment to take a look and she grimaced. "Oh god… What happened to her?" Jane crouched down next to the body, her eyes lingering on the girl's round face.

Maura spoke softly as she continued her examination. "She looks like she's in her mid to late 20s."

"Maur, she has chunks of flesh missing…" Jane noted.

"Yes." Maura agreed. "Her clothes are practically shredded and these marks look like bite marks. From a canine." The ME's eyes carefully studied the body. "And these marks here?" Maura pointed to the long slits on each wrist. "Likely to help make her more appetizing to the dogs."

Jane frowned. "Do we know what killed her?"

Maura looked over at Jane and shrugged. "She could have bled out or there could be more wounds that could have contributed but I won't know until I get her back to the morgue."

Frost looked down at the girl's face once more. "Is it just me or does she look familiar?" He asked, watching as Jane stood up and began to look around the container.

"Yes," Maura murmured as she stood as well, still looking down into the girl's lifeless eyes. "She looks like me."

Jane and Frost both snapped their heads toward Maura and then back at the dead girl laying in a pool of her own blood, her blonde hair soaked and sticking to the cement floor.

Jane's face paled. "She looks like…"

"Callie." Maura finished quietly.

Frost looked between the two women. He knew who Callie was but he had yet to meet her. "Wait, are you saying that—"

Maura looked over at Frost, her face a mask. "It's possible. But I can't be sure of anything until I get her back to the morgue.

Everyone was silent until came up behind Frost, frowning down at the body. "Workers said they haven't been in here in months and the last time they checked it was empty." He paused, watching as Maura stood and removed her gloves and began to speak with CSU. "Those dog bites? Looks like she was mutilated."

Frost nodded once as Jane turned to look at the two of them. "Yeah, Maura isn't certain but she says they look like bites from an animal, possibly a dog." Jane said.

Korsak stared down at the body for a moment, a frown marring his face. "I've heard of a few similar cases where the victim was mauled by multiple dogs. If this is the same killer then it's gang related."

Frost and Jane gave the older detective matching confused looks. "Gang related? I've heard of strangulations and plastic bags over the face," She glanced once at Maura before continuing. "Ice picks through the neck or heart, but dog mauling?"

"It's not just drug trafficking and guns and women. There's also dog fighting." Korsak said as he and Frost stepped aside to allow Maura's people to haul the body out to the ME's van.

Jane shook her head in disgust. "Sick fucking bastards." Sighing she took one last glance around the empty room. "Have CSU dust for prints and uniforms canvas the surrounding area." She looked up at her girlfriend who was gathering her things. "Maur, you want a ride back to the precinct or are you riding with the body?"

Maura smiled softly. "I'd like to get her cleaned up and get to work right away so I'm going to ride with the body." She said as she stepped closer to the detective to give her arm a gentle squeeze. "Besides I'm sure you want to help canvas the area and perhaps find a witness."

Jane smiled gratefully. "Call me if you come up with anything."

"I will." Maura assured. She nodded to both Korsak and Frost as well before she exited the storage container and followed the body out to the van.
