CHAPTER 2
She was saddened by the situation. It didn't have to come down to running away if she hadn't known about their secret rendevous. She was always a faithful wife, maybe even to a fault which is why he did what he did with Tomoyo. She sighed as she exited their apartment complex. Her bags weighed like lead in her hands. Each step is a mere reminder that she has failed their relationship.
But I guess he feels the same, she thought. It doesn't matter anymore, she has to leave before her condition gets worse. Her hand in her chest, she feels her heart beating. It's not long before it stops.
The cab driver was very fatherly. She reminded him of her grandfather Masaki who always doted on her. She wonders what it would be like to see him again.
Rain was starting to pour down the streets of upper Manhattan. She never really liked living the high life, she thought it was a waste of resources. But this wasn't her house. Her detour was not planned, she just thought it was supposed to be done.
Standing in front of a white washed victorian apartment, she willed herself to walk forward. She hadn't realized that she was holding her breath until she rang the doorbell. She could hear the footsteps getting louder. She almost ran back to the cab, but she was too late the door opened to reveal a confused Tomoyo.
The morning light penetrated through his window. The beeping sound of his alarm clock was blaring in his ears. He was awake way before it rang He didn't get much sleep, how could he rest after what happened last night?
He stood up and got his cellphone. He tried calling her. The thing is he couldn't get himself to press the green button after dialing her number. Maybe he's afraid of what she was going to say, if ever she picks up the phone. He was even more afraid that she has already changed her number. What if she really was determined to get as far as possible?
He put his phone down and stood up. He stared outside, the sun was beginning to rise. He remembered their first day as newly weds. He stood at the exact spot with the sun rising behind him as he gazed upon his glowing wife. She was his and he was hers and he couldn't have been happier. What happened to them? What happened to him? Was he really blinded by his ambitions that he let her slip away?
He was startled by the sound of his phone ringing. His heart skipped a beat. He wished it was her. When he looked at the screen, it read another name.
"What do you want, Tomoyo?"
"Sakura was here. I would've called you sooner but opted to wait until morning."
He could hear the excitement and joy in her voice. He was disgusted by the thought of her delight in the situation. He calmed himself down, he needed to know where she is and lashing his anger out will not be beneficial.
"What did she say?" His voice almost a whisper.
"She told me what happened there. She told me she knows about us, and she is happy with whatever decision we make. We can be together now, babe." Her voice is sweet and soft, but he could hear the malicious intent behind that sugarcoated words that flows from her mouth.
"I don't believe you."
The words left his mouth before he even thought them. I don't believe you because I don't want to believe that this is really happening is what he wanted to say.
"What do you mean you don't believe me? Syaoran, you should be happy she's letting you go. She's letting us be happy!"
His stomach made a churn. He felt nauseous all of a sudden. This is not how it was supposed to go down. His life is planned out since his childhood and he is certain that Tomoyo was not part of the latter part of his life. It's just so wrong.
"Syaoran?"
"What?" He hissed. It might have sounded strained to Tomoyo but he couldn't have cared less. His mind is clear now. He had hours to think about his feelings and his previous actions. He knew what he has to do. He already realized the gravity of the situation.
"You are happy, right?" She sounded hopeful. He knew better than to trust the sincerity of this girl who claims she loves him so.
"I'm sorry, I have to go."
He ended the call. He'll talk to her another time. He prefers to see her personally and end things once and for all. One night stands were supposed to be one time things only. He sat down their bed and looked longingly at Sakura's side. How could he have been so stupid! He ran his fingers through his hair and sighed. Their nightly escapades continued. He knew it was wrong but the feeling of getting caught excited him. Now that he was, he's not feeling so excited anymore.
He grabbed his keys and went out the door. He didn't even bother changing clothes. He had to know where she was going now that he's able to mobilize himself. He knew one person who could help him but he knew he needed to be ready for what he was going to hear.
Ring. Ring. Ring.
He stared at his phone. It took most of his will power to not smash his phone right there and then but then it was such a lovely morning despite what transpired yesterday. Sakura should be safe inside the plane away from Syaoran. He was happy that she finally had the guts to leave him. But now he was the one to take all of Syaoran's insistent bugging.
He sighed and answered in the happiest tone he could muster, "Hello asshole! What do you want?"
He heard him chuckle and his eyes went up the skies and his teeth clenched. "No 'good morning' today, huh?" If he hadn't heard the sadness seeping from his voice he would have hanged up, but he always believed in the best of people. He sighed.
"What is it that you want, Xiao Lang? Keep it quick."
"Please," he heard him take a deep breath, "I fucked up, Yukito. Please, tell me where she is."
"Damn right you did."
"Please, I need to know where she is." He sounded remorseful enough, but he didn't buy it.
"Why?" His voice was crisp.
"I want to make things right. Please, Yukito. I know you're one of the few people she trusts here in New York. Please, I need to know where she's going or I'll lose my mind. I have to see her –"
He sighed and cut him off, desperate to end the rambling he was hearing. "Think about it, Xiao Lang. You're a smart man, you'll know where she's going. It doesn't take a genius to figure it out."
He ended the call and proceeded to drinking his cup of coffee. Things will be interesting from now on. He smiled a sad smile. He hopes things will be better for Sakura.
