AN: Sorry for taking so long to update again. I wrote this during my finals week, but then I had to take exams so I couldn't actually post it, but it's winter break so hopefully I can update more. Also you might hate me for this chapter, but please review anyway!

Important: It's been a while since I updated so I don't know how much anyone remembers this story, but I edited all the previous chapters recently and added some stuff to them as well. I would recommend reading the other chapter again before continuing with this one.

Double Agent

Chapter 5: Sleeping Beauty

Reaching around to her back, Alex pulled up the zipper of her black maxi dress. It was a casual dress, all black, with a slight scrunched waistline. Looking in the mirror Alex could feel the tears well up in her eyes as she thought about why she was wearing this dress. Before the tears could spill over, she blinked quickly and wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes. Alex grabbed a small pair of silver studs and put them on before walking out of her room, not caring enough to put on any makeup. She made her way downstairs and grabbed her purse off the counter before heading to the front door. Seeing Clover was nowhere to be found Alex assumed she had left already. They hadn't talked to each other much since the events that had unfolded the day before and Alex didn't feel much like talking now either. Alex got in her car and began driving to WOOHP. She didn't miss the irony of how she finally got her wish of not being woohped to headquarters, but at a price she had never wanted to pay.

Alex looked over to Clover who was pacing in the corridor of LAMOS's headquarters. She had been like this for the past twenty minutes since they were still waiting to hear from Sam. Ten minutes in Clover was worrying about the fact that they may have missed a guard because she swore she saw someone turn a corner. Alex had spent five minutes assuring her that they had gotten all of them, so Clover had resorted to pacing back and forth in an attempt to lessen her anxiousness, but it was getting on Alex's nerves. "They're fine Clover. Both of them are capable agents and they can handle themselves." Clover momentarily stopped her pacing to look over at Alex. "It shouldn't be taking this long, Alex, we've been here forever!" Alex rolled her eyes at Clover's exaggeration. She didn't bother telling her that in fact they had only been here about twenty minutes because Clover wouldn't listen anyway.

A few minutes later the ringing of Alex's compowder finally broke the tense silence and Alex almost sighed in relief. She quickly pulled out her compowder to answer it. However, as soon as she opened it, she knew something was wrong. Instead of Sam's face appearing on her compowder as she had expected, she was greeted with Scam's face, and he didn't look happy. Alex's stomach dropped as she realized something had to be very wrong for Scam to look like that. "We have a problem. I can't say much right now, but Jerry is flying a helicopter to us, so meet us outside." Before she could reply Scam's face disappeared. Alex and Clover shared a look before running down the corridor to exit the building. With a sinking feeling Alex realized that something must have happened to Sam otherwise she would have called them, not Scam. Fearing the worst Alex pushed herself to run faster.

Finally seeing the exit, Alex pushed open the door and immediately began running again towards the WOOHP helicopter. She saw Scam standing with a pale looking Jerry, but she couldn't see Sam anywhere. Alex and Clover stopped in front of Jerry and Scam. Both were uncharacteristically silent. "What's going on? Where is Sam?" Clover broke the silence, wanting answers. Scam looked at Jerry before turning to face the Clover. He hesitated a moment before speaking. "Sam was shot." Alex felt the blood drain from her face as Scam's words registered in her head. She barely caught Jerry's next words. "It was close to her heart, she lost a lot of blood, but she's on her way to the hospital. We'll have the best surgeons and doctors looking after her." Both Alex and Clover remained silent not knowing what to say at that moment. Their best friend was in danger of dying and there was nothing they could do about it.

The next few hours passed in a blur. Everyone rushed to the hospital where Sam was being treated. Alex vaguely remembered trying to console Sam's parents that she would be fine even though Alex was having a tough time believing that herself. They all waited in the hospital for what felt like days while Sam was in surgery. Nurses were constantly coming in and out of the room. No one could give them any concrete information. Hours had passed before the doctor came out of the room and Alex nudged Clover awake.

The look on the doctor's face made Alex's stomach clench. He's just tired. I'm sure Sam is fine. She has to be. The doctor took a deep breath before she spoke. "I'm very sorry, but your friend didn't make it. We tried as hard as we could to save her, but she had lost so much blood by the time she got to us…" Alex stopped listening to the rest of the doctor's words. It didn't matter anyway. Sam was gone. Alex knew she should feel sad or upset or even angry, but she just felt nothing. She looked over at Sam's parent who were crying. Clover looked angry. Jerry and Scam both looked upset.

Alex still felt like she was in a fog when Jerry came up to her and Clover. "There's a WHOOP car waiting outside to take you both home. We all need to get some sleep and you two are in no condition to drive." Jerry walked away to talk to Sam's parents and Alex followed Clover to the car. Neither said a word to each other as they got in the car and it sped off toward their house.

Everything just felt so empty. Alex assumed she was in shock, but she couldn't believe that Sam was dead. She had so much of her life to live. It just wasn't fair. Alex had always felt that Sam had the most potential out of all of them. She was so smart and caring that there was no way she wouldn't be successful. Now it was all over. All the hard work Sam had put into her life was for nothing. In a way Alex wished if someone had to go, it should have been her. She had no idea what she wanted to do with her life while Sam had everything planned out. It just wasn't fair.

"Alex, we're here," Clover whispered. Alex jumped a little in her seat, startled out of her thoughts. They both entered the house, but nobody spoke. All of a sudden, the silence was suffocating. "I don't know how to feel right now," Alex said, breaking the overwhelming silence. Clover collapsed on the couch and put her head in her hands. "I know. At first I was so angry but now I don't know what I feel," she replied. Alex sat down next to Clover and put her arms around the blonde's trembling shoulders. "I can't believe she's actually gone. I always knew our job was dangerous, but for some reason it never seemed like something like this would happen to us. I don't know what to do without her," Alex spoke as she finally felt the tears running down her face. Clover looked up as tears welled up in her eyes. "I'm gonna miss Sammie so much," Clover's voice broke as her tears spilled over.

Both girls remained on the couch crying in silence until both their phones went off with a text. They looked at each questioningly before reaching over for their phones. "It's from Jerry. There's going to be a memorial service at WHOOP tomorrow for Sam," Clover raised her eyebrows. "Well that was really fast," she responded. "It's probably so her parents can arrange whatever they want afterwards. I guess we should try to get some sleep then," Alex said, slowly raising her tired body from the couch. She wasn't sure she'd be able to calm down enough to sleep, but she had to at least try.

Alex pulled up to WHOOP with no memory of actually driving there. Her thoughts had been so consumed in everything that had happened and she also hadn't gotten much sleep. Thank goodness I didn't get into an accident. Maybe I should ask Clover for a ride back. Alex looked around and saw Clover's car on the other side of the parking lot. Feeling relieved that Clover had made it to WHOOP, she locked her car and walked inside the building.

If she didn't know better Alex would've never guessed that Jerry had put everything together so quickly. It was decorated just as nicely as WHOOP's parties. Of course this was less flashy and cheerful. Instead of using black, Jerry went with a silver theme. In the entrance there was a picture of Sam surrounded by flowers and candles. Next to it was a stationary and a small box for people to write condolences for Sam's family. There was a small string of lights around the area and the entrance to the main hall.

Alex's thoughts turned dark as she wondered how many agents Jerry had to do this for before Sam. Maybe he had stuff prepared for memorial services with the way their line of work was. Alex quickly shook her head to clear it before walking through the door where everyone was seated for the service. She quickly spotted Clover and sat down next to her. Alex barely paid attention to any of the speeches of the other agents and she was grateful Jerry hadn't asked her to speak because she had no idea what she would've said. Sam's parent's would probably want her to say something at the funeral, so she should probably start thinking of what she would say. Alex was lost in her thoughts for the rest of the service and only started paying attention to her surroundings when everyone started to get up to go to the lobby for refreshments. Alex thought it was a little absurd that everyone was expected to eat and chat like someone hadn't just died. Like Sam hadn't just died.

There was a long table at the side of the hall. It was filled with all the usual finger foods, like cheese, crackers, and fruit. Alex grabbed a little of everything without really paying much attention to any of it. She supposed she should feel hungry since she couldn't remember the last time she ate, but the thought of eating made her stomach feel a little queasy.

The door from the memorial room opened as more people entered the lobby, but Alex paid no attention to it until she saw a flash of blonde in her peripheral vision. Putting her plate down she decided to talk to Clover until she realized that Clover was storming angrily toward whoever had just left the memorial hall. Looking ahead she saw just who Clover was headed towards. Oh no. This can't good. Alex felt her blood run cold at the thought of the scene Clover was about to create.

"You! It's your fault she's dead! You were supposed to be her partner! She never got hurt when she was with us! How the hell weren't you able to protect her?! That was the only thing you had to do! You should have been shot instead of her!" Clover screamed. Everyone turned to look at the commotion, but no one moved to stop Clover from yelling at Scam. It seemed people were too shocked at the fact that such a scene was taking place at a memorial service.

Alex saw Jerry begin to move towards the two of them. Looking back she saw a glint of silver come from Clover's handbag. It took a moment for her to realize what it was and her heart stopped when she realized what was about to happen. "Clover NO!" she yelled out.

"You deserve to die Tim Scam," Clover spat.

The sound of a gunshot rang out loudly in the large lobby.

Alex jolted up in a shock from the hospital chair she was sitting in.

AN 2: Hopefully you guys don't hate me too much after this chapter. I haven't started writing the next one yet, but I'm really hoping it'll be up soon. Please review and if you have any suggestions about where you want the story to go I'd love to hear them!
